Circulating MicroRNA in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: Emerging data suggest that heart-related microRNAs (miRs) may serve as circulating biomarkers of myocardial injury. We aimed to determine the circulating profile of miRs in patients with volume-overloaded right ventricles after repair of tetralogy (TOF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 104 TOF patients and 70 controls were recruited. The study was conducted in two phases: (1) determination of circulating heart-related miRs described in left heart diseases (miR-1, miR-133a, miR-208a, miR-208b and miR423-5p) by quantitative real-time PCR in 49 patients and 30 controls and followed

Circulating MicroRNA as Potential Source for Neurodegenerative Diseases Biomarkers.

An increasing number of circulating micro-ribonucleic acids (microRNAs, miRNAs) have been discovered its potential as biomarkers to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) by many researchers. However, there were obvious inconsistencies among previous studies, and thus we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate whether miRNA is an effective biomarker with high accuracy to diagnose the NDs. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and other related databases were used to search eligible articles. The data of sensitivity and specificity were employed to plot the summary receiver operato

Circulating microRNA-222 and microRNA-146b: a potential differentiating tool between benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are common, and the majority are of benign nature, however the main clinical aim remains to discriminate malignant ones. Despite that, the actual routine workup for thyroid nodules including hormonal testing, ultrasound scan, scintigraphy, and Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is still deficient, often necessitating surgical intervention for a conclusive histopathological examination and diagnosis. Therefore, searching for molecular tools that help in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules gains an increasing interest. METHODOLOGY: This case-cont

Circulating MicroRNA Profiling Identifies Distinct MicroRNA Signatures in Acute Ischemic Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack Patients.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) refers to a momentary neurologic deficit caused by focal cerebral, spinal or retinal ischemic insult. TIA is associated with a high risk of impending acute ischemic stroke (AIS), a neurologic dysfunction characterized by focal cerebral, spinal or retinal infarction. Understanding the differences in molecular pathways in AIS and TIA has merit for deciphering the underlying cause for neuronal deficits with long-term effects and high risks of morbidity and mortality. In this study, we performed comprehensive investigations into the circulating microRNA (miRNA) prof

Zinc and circulating microRNAs in women with insulin resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Insulin resistance (IR) is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes and is potentially associated with zinc deficiency due to the role of this mineral in the metabolism of this hormone. MicroRNAs (miRs) can regulate insulin signaling pathway, glucose metabolism, and inflammation, and their expression can be modulated by different nutrients and bioactive compounds. Nutrimiromics investigates how nutrients modulate gene expression through miRs. However, the associations between miRNAs related to IR mechanisms and zinc status in the body remains unclear. Therefore, this st

Circulating exosomal microRNAs as biomarkers of lupus nephritis.

OBJECTIVE: Disruption in the delicate symphony of genes, microRNA (miRNA), or protein expression can result in the dysregulation of the immune system, leading to the devastating consequences such as lupus nephritis (LN). The capacity of exosomes to transport miRNAs between cells and modify the phenotype of recipient cells implies their involvement in persistent kidney inflammation. This study unveils identifying two previously undiscovered exosomal miRNAs in the serum of LN patients, offering potential solutions to the current challenges in LN diagnosis and management. METHODS: Initially, we

Detecting Circulating MicroRNAs as Biomarkers in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by a progressive loss of cognitive functions. As the result of predicted demographic changes over the next decades, Alzheimer's disease is expected to be one of the most pressing medical and social challenges facing our generation. Current treatment strategies remain symptomatic. However, new approaches have shown promise in clinical trials, particularly in patients with only mild or moderate symptoms. Early detection of Alzheimer's disease is therefore of critical importance. Currently available diagnostic approaches

Circulating microRNAs as potential biomarkers for unstable angina.

BACKGROUND: Chest pain is a typical presentation in the emergency department (ED), often due to acute coronary syndrome. Accurate and fast identification is crucial. The diagnosis and proper treatment of unstable angina (UA) can reduce the chance of acute myocardial infarction, and reduce high mortality and morbidity rates. However there is a lack of reliable and valid biomarkers in the diagnosis of UA. This study investigated the usefulness of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) for differentiating UA from non-ischemic chest pain (NICP) in the ED. Methods The expressions of circulating miRNAs in p

Circulating MicroRNAs in the Screening of Prenatal Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Screening tests are recommended to identify genetic defects, chromosomal aneuploidies, and structural birth defects. Sonographic and maternal serum-based options are available for the risk assessment of aneuploidy in the first and/or second trimester. Also, invasive diagnostic methods, such as amniocentesis, are used for prenatal diagnosis, but these methods carry a tangible risk to the fetus. However, in recent years, circulating fetal nucleic acids have a promising moleculer tool in the noninvasive prenatal diagnosis of fetal chromosomal aneuploidies. In this study, we aimed to ex

Circulating Exosome microRNAs as Diagnostic Biomarkers of Dementia.

Dementia is a syndrome of acquired cognitive impairment that leads to a significant decline in a patient's daily life, ability to learn, and the ability to communicate with others. Dementia occurs in many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). Although the analysis of biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and peripheral blood physicochemical analysis can indicate neurological impairment, there are currently no sensitive biomarkers for early clinical diagnosis of dementia or for identifying
