During recent decades, the educational outcomes of the children of immigrants have been extensively studied, with a growing emphasis on the heterogeneity of the so-called second generation. Yet, the impact of host country citizenship on children's educational outcomes has only received limited attention so far, although children of immigrants do not get automatic birthright citizenship in most European countries. Focusing on the Netherlands, this paper compares educational trajectories among citizen and non-citizen children of immigrants. Register data and sequence analysis are used to map and

BACKGROUND: Housing is a key social determinant of health, yet little is known about how homelessness shapes migrants' health in Nordic welfare states where legal status, labour market attachment and welfare entitlements are unevenly distributed. This article examines how homelessness affects the physical and mental health of migrants, and how structural barriers limit their capacity to navigate access to health care.
METHODS: Exploratory mixed-methods study combining registry data on shelter use in Oslo (2019-2023) and interviews with ten frontline health and social care staff at a long-term

Although European blood collection organizations are currently obtaining sufficient and safe blood from the majority population, they report having difficulty recruiting first and second-generation immigrants from non-European countries. Most existing studies on these underrepresented groups, who have been coined the "missing minorities" in blood donation, have adopted an instrumental approach that focuses on the development of targeted recruitment strategies to overcome specific barriers to donation faced by members of these minorities. Although this approach does offer several short-term ben

Environmental law has traditionally been framed as a regulatory mechanism for ecological protection, yet its psychological and social dimensions remain underexplored. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of positive psychology, particularly Seligman's PERMA framework and the emerging literature on ecological wellbeing, this article proposes, as a theoretical framework rather than an established causal finding, that environmental law can function not merely as a constraint on harmful behaviour but as a structural enabler of human flourishing. We synthesise interdisciplinary evidence linking e

PURPOSE: This article is an ethnography of the Hitnü, a nomadic Indigenous people who, due to killings and threats, sought refuge in the city of Arauca, on the border with Venezuela (northeastern Colombia). It examines the urban experience of poverty and exclusion in a context of Indigenous rights and differentiated policies offered to the displaced and Indigenous peoples and demonstrates how different forms of violence affect their health and limit effective responses to illness.
METHODOLOGY: A four-month ethnographic study (2023-2024) was carried out, during which one of the authors lived w

Few charitable organizations have achieved the status of global recognition enjoyed by UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, which embodies the international effort to provide for needy children the world over. Created because of its synchronicity with the United Nations' stated purpose—to maintain peace in the world—UNICEF launched its operations in 1946. Its founding, early operations and eventual restructuring reveal a great deal about concurrent political and economic events, but also provide keen insight into international ideas about who qualified for full citizenship in the post-w

Until recently, the only medical treatment available for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) was interferon-based therapy, a notoriously long and arduous treatment with limited success. However, in December 2015, the Australian Government announced a scheme of 'universal access' to new, highly effective direct-acting antiviral therapies (DAAs). This article draws on in-depth interviews with community actors engaged in national and state-based drug user and viral hepatitis advocacy to trace how universal access to curative medicines affords revised notions of citizenship and social inclusion among peop

BACKGROUND: As part of the response to Canada's worsening overdose crisis driven by a toxic, adulterated drug supply, there has been increased attention to and expansion of drug treatment, options, including injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT). iOAT typically involves the, witnessed daily injection of opioids under healthcare provider supervision. There is a robust, evidence base on iOAT; however, there has been less focus on how people engage with this; treatment outside of clinical trials. This paper examines how people engage with iOAT programs, in expanded treatment settings in Cana

Current policy and practice directed towards people with learning disabilities originates in the deinstitutionalisation processes, civil rights concerns and integrationist philosophies of the 1970s and 1980s. However, historians know little about the specific contexts within which these were mobilised. Although it is rarely acknowledged in the secondary literature, MIND was prominent in campaigning for rights-based services for learning disabled people during this time. This article sets MIND's campaign within the wider historical context of the organisation's origins as a main institution of

In this paper we bring together ethnographic research carried out during two clinical prevention trials to explore identities, relations and political imaginations that were brought to life by these different technologies. We highlight the ways in which critical anthropological engagement in clinical trials can help us radically reconsider the parameters and standards of medical research. In the paper we analyse the very different circumstances that made these two trials possible, highlighting the different temporalities and politics of HIV and Ebola as epidemics. We then describe four themes

In the dialogue between Timothy F. Murphy and Cristina Richie about queer bioethics and queer reproduction in this journal, significant points of the emergent and extremely important discussions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and queer bioethics are raised. Richie specifies correctly that queer bioethics can either complement or contradict LGBT bioethics and the queer standpoint against heteroconformity and heterofuturity is decisive here. As the field of queer bioethics is such a recent and essential part of consideration for bioethics and as it is still evolving, the objective

INTRODUCTION: In contemporary higher education, particularly within Confucian cultural contexts characterized by high power distance and hierarchical structures, leadership plays a critical role in fostering positive employee behaviors. Despite growing interest in authentic leadership, limited research has examined its influence on organizational citizenship behavior in non-Western settings, especially considering underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between authentic leadership and organizational citizenship behavior, w

Despite the important role of peers in the social process of classroom citizenship, the peer influence related to moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community remain unclear. To this end, it was examined to what extent youth become similar to their friends in moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community. Participants were 283 South Korean third to sixth graders (Mage = 9.60 years, SD = 0.97; 51.6% girls) who completed an online survey for moral disengagement, social goals, the sense of peer community and friendship network across the beginning (Time 1) a

OBJECTIVE: Avoidable hospitalization (AH) has been widely studied as a possible measure of primary health care performance. Since studies evaluating AH in migrant children, particularly in Europe, are lacking, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of maternal citizenship on the risk of AH in children.
METHODS: The cohort study included all live newborns recorded in the Medical Birth Register (MBR) of Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region (Italy) in the years 1989-2012, followed from 30 d after their birth up to the 14th year of life. Cox regression models were used to estimate Hazard Ratio

Citizenship status confers rights and access to healthcare, yet little is known about how it impacts contraception use and type of method use. This study examined the role of citizenship status on contraceptive use among reproductive-aged (18-44 years), cis-gender Latinx and Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women. This study used the 2017-2020 waves of the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). Inclusion criteria included cisgender, heterosexual Latinx and API women of reproductive age (18-44 years) who were at risk of becoming pregnant (N = 3,027). Participants were classified into the fo

Despite unprecedented medical advances, global healthcare systems are failing to deliver universal, equitable and quality care. Many systems also have low resilience to surges in demand, are highly fragmented, or suffer from unsustainable funding models. The crisis of poor accessibility of healthcare services, which includes both lack of availability and unacceptably long waiting times, stems from systemic failures: inadequate provision of primary healthcare, suboptimal deployment of human and non-human healthcare assets, metric- and profit-centric models that exacerbate inequality, fragmented

Background: Foreign citizenship and low socioeconomic status are key determinants of health inequalities and may influence maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study aimed to assess maternal health during pregnancy and the main adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes related to labour and childbirth among women living in Trentino (Northern Italy), comparing women with Italian and foreign citizenship. Methods: A retrospective epidemiological study was conducted using data from the Birth Assistance Certificate (CedAP) database of the Autonomous Province of Trento. This study included all women wh

Drawing upon the notion of managerial discretion from upper echelons theory, we theorize which external contingencies moderate the relationship between collective organizational citizenship behavior (COCB) and unit performance. Focusing on business unit (BU) management teams, we hypothesize that COCB of BU management teams enhances BU performance and that this impact depends on environmental uncertainty and BU management-team decision latitude, 2 determinants of managerial discretion. In particular, the positive effect of COCB is stronger when environmental uncertainty or the BU management-tea

U.S. citizenship is critical for reducing refugees' precarity, securing access to certain rights, healthcare, and social service benefits, and obtaining a U.S. passport. This paper highlights findings from a community-engaged, critical ethnographic study examining the impact of the U.S. citizenship exam on the health of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. Thirty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with adults who were recruited through a Rohingya-led community center in a U.S. midwestern city and were coupled with participant observations at the community center, and in participants' homes and

This study explores young people's perceptions of citizenship and recovery for individuals with severe mental health challenges using the story completion method. In this qualitative approach, participants were invited to complete an open-ended story stem about a fictional character, Billie, whose journey of recovery unfolds through their narratives. We analyzed 47 stories, with lengths ranging from 65 to 598 words (M = 253 words), applying both horizontal (thematic) and vertical (narrative progression) analyses. The findings reveal that participants often framed Billie's recovery in terms of
