Long-Term outcome of neonatal Citrobacter koseri (diversus) meningitis treated with imipenem/meropenem and surgical drainage.

Neonatal Citrobacter koseri (diversus) meningitis is often complicated by the formation of brain abscesses and has a poor neurological outcome with seizures, mental retardation and paresis as sequelae in 50% of the cases. As there is emerging resistance to ampicillin, gentamicin and third-generation cephalosporins, we attempted to treat this infection with carbapenems. Carbapenems in combination with cefotaxime and surgical drainage may play an important role in treating C. koseri meningitis.

Severe asthma patient with secondary Citrobacter koseri abdominal infection: first case report and review of the literature.

Citrobacter koseri (C. koseri) is a Gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming facultative anaerobic bacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. C. koseri typically utilizes citrate as the sole carbon source and constitutes part of the normal gastrointestinal flora in humans and animals. As an opportunistic pathogen, C. koseri infections are mainly observed in neonates, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised hosts. C. koseri has been one of the main etiological agents of neonatal meningitis and cerebral abscess. In recent years, an increasing number of cases have been reported in ad

Citrobacter koseri causing osteomyelitis in a diabetic foot with concomitant acute gouty arthritis successfully treated with ertapenem.

We present an elderly diabetic man with left hallux pain and drainage who was initially diagnosed with acute gouty arthritis using the diagnostic rule for acute gout and monosodium urate crystals presented on synovial fluid analysis. Further investigation with surgical debridement, plain X-ray, MRI and wound culture revealed concomitant Citrobacter koseri septic arthritis with osteomyelitis. C. koseri is considered an opportunistic infection that rarely causes musculoskeletal infections. Acute gouty arthritis and septic arthritis are rarely seen occurring concomitantly in the same joint and ar

A Rare Case of Multi-Organ Complications Due to Disseminated Citrobacter koseri Infection Originating From a Renal Abscess.

Citrobacter koseri is a gram-negative bacillus that can cause severe infections in immunocompromised individuals. While it is a rare urinary tract pathogen, its potential for dissemination and severe complications demands attention. We report the case of a 44-year-old male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed a disseminated C. koseri infection originating from a perirenal abscess. The infection extended locally, resulting in septic thrombosis of the left renal vein, and spread distantly, causing septic pulmonary embolism. The patient underwent multiple surgical interve

Genomic Insights into a New Citrobacter koseri Strain Revealed Gene Exchanges with the Virulence-Associated Yersinia pestis pPCP1 Plasmid.

The history of infectious diseases raised the plague as one of the most devastating for human beings. Far too often considered an ancient disease, the frequent resurgence of the plague has led to consider it as a reemerging disease in Madagascar, Algeria, Libya, and Congo. The genetic factors associated with the pathogenicity of Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of the plague, involve the acquisition of the pPCP1 plasmid that promotes host invasion through the expression of the virulence factor Pla. The surveillance of plague foci after the 2003 outbreak in Algeria resulted in a positive de

Integrated in silico and in vitro assessment of Azadirachta indica leaf extract against multi-drug resistant Citrobacter koseri and Staphylococcus saprophyticus.

Azadirachta indica (Neem) is well-known for its therapeutic potential against bacteria, while Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Citrobacter koseri are significant public health threats due to their potential to cause skin infections. This study aims to identify phytocompounds from the methanolic extract of A. indica leaves and evaluate their efficacy to inhibit those bacteria through in vitro and computational approaches. The bacteria were isolated from boil-derived pus, and the extract's growth-inhibitory effect was examined by the disc diffusion method. Additionally, GC-MS identified phytoche

Citrobacter spp. bloodstream infection primarily affects the elderly either hospitalized or closely associated with health care - a population-based observational study with comparisons between C. koseri and the C. freundii complex.

OBJECTIVES: Despite regularly being found in blood cultures, there are few studies of bloodstream infection (BSI) with Citrobacter. In this population-based study, the aim was to explore patient characteristics, outcome, and incidence in a publicly funded single payer setting. METHODS: Patients with growth of Citrobacter in blood culture were identified through the clinical microbiology laboratory in Lund, Sweden, for the year 2013-2023. This laboratory serves the whole Skåne region, with a population of 1.4 million. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: 554 episodes of Cit

High prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases and qnr determinants in Citrobacter species from Japan: dissemination of CTX-M-2.

OBJECTIVES: Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have become a problem among AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae and the emergence of concomitant quinolone resistance in β-lactamase-producing isolates poses a global threat. In this study we investigated the prevalence and regional variation of ESBLs in Japanese clinical isolates of Citrobacter spp. and analysed plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants in ESBL-producing Citrobacter spp. METHODS: A total of 348 clinical isolates of Citrobacter spp. collected throughout Japan were studied. Citrobacter Sedlakii as a Rare Cause of Brain Abscess in a Late-Preterm Omani Infant: Case report and literature review.

Brain abscess in neonates is rare but remains a severe, life-threatening complication of meningitis with significant morbidity and mortality. While Citrobacter koseri and Citrobacter freundii are commonly implicated in brain-abscess formation, Citrobacter sedlakii is an uncommon causative pathogen. To date, only two cases of neonatal brain abscess caused by C. sedlakii have been reported in the literature. Early diagnosis, timely surgical intervention and prompt antibiotic therapy are critical to achieving a favourable outcome. A third case of a C. sedlakii brain abscess in a preterm infant, p

The Unusual Suspect: Citrobacter Infection as a Rare Cause of Renal Abscess.

Citrobacter infections have emerged as now a common nosocomial pathogen. Most of the infections manifest in patients with underlying medical conditions. The features of infection can range from infections in the lower urinary tract, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal disease, or bacteremia, however renal abscesses remain uncommon. Here we present the case of a 48-year-old female with medical history of diabetes that presented with a right renal abscess secondary to Citrobacter koseri infection managed with drainage and antimicrobial treatment.

Dry stress and survival time of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enterobacteriaceae in dehydrated powdered infant formula.

Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product, and opportunistic pathogens could multiply in the reconstituted product, resulting in neonatal infections. In this study, the generation of sublethally injured Enterobacteriaceae during desiccation and their persistence in dehydrated powdered infant formula was assessed during a 2.5-year period. The study included 27 strains of Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella Enteritidis, Citrobacter koseri, Citrobacter freundii, Escherichia coli, Escherichia vulneris, Pantoea spp., Klebsiella oxytoca, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The role of Citrobacter in clinical disease of children: review.

Various species of Citrobacter may cause infections in neonates and immunocompromised hosts. Citrobacter koseri (formerly Citrobacter diversus) is best known as the cause of sepsis and meningitis leading to central nervous system (CNS) abscesses in neonates and young infants. Early onset and late-onset infections occur as for other neonatal bacterial infections. The majority of cases are sporadic, with no clear source of infection. A few have been confirmed to be vertically transmitted, and nosocomial outbreaks have occurred in neonatal care units. The pathophysiology is not well understood, b
