DTCo: An Ensemble SSL Algorithm for X-ray Classification.

In the last decades, the classification of images was established as a typical method for diagnosing many abnormalities and diseases. The purpose of an efficient classification method is considered essential in modern diagnostic medicine in order to increase the number of diagnosed patients and decrease the analysis time. The significant storage capabilities of electronic media have enabled research centers to accumulate repositories of classified (labeled) images and mostly of a large number of unclassified (unlabeled) images. Semi-supervised learning algorithms have become a hot topic of res

Application of the synergetic algorithm on the classification of lymph tissue cells.

A synergetic classification algorithm for lymphocyte discrimination is developed. By improving the ISODATA algorithm, it is possible to cluster the cell types in the training set with respect to the cluster center samples which plays a role as the cell prototype set types. Based on synergetic theory, a two-step synergetic competition mechanism was established: (1) the order parameter competition was introduced between the test cell sample and the prototypes of each prototype set, by setting the prototype of the maximum order parameter as the best prototype of each set; (2) similar matching com

A classification system and reconstructive algorithm for acquired vaginal defects.

Although multiple flaps have been used for vaginal reconstruction, a logical approach to reconstruction of these often complex defects has not been described. The objective of this study was to establish a classification system for acquired vaginal defects and to develop a reconstructive algorithm derived from this system. This study is a retrospective review of a 7-year experience with 51 flaps in 37 consecutive vaginal reconstructions. Twenty-two partial defects and 15 circumferential defects were reconstructed in 35 patients. Average patient age was 48 years (range, 19 to 69 years). Of the

Non-linear cancer classification using a modified radial basis function classification algorithm.

This paper proposes a modified radial basis function classification algorithm for non-linear cancer classification. In the algorithm, a modified simulated annealing method is developed and combined with the linear least square and gradient paradigms to optimize the structure of the radial basis function (RBF) classifier. The proposed algorithm can be adopted to perform non-linear cancer classification based on gene expression profiles and applied to two microarray data sets involving various human tumor classes: (1) Normal versus colon tumor; (2) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) versus acute lymph

Palatal Fistulae: Classification, Prevention, and Algorithmic Surgical Management.

Palatal fistulae, defined as persistent epithelialized communications between the oral and nasal cavities, represent the most common complication following cleft palate repair. They significantly impair speech and feeding, contributing to psychosocial challenges and increased healthcare burden. Fistula formation is often multifactorial, influenced by surgical technique, closure under tension, cleft severity, and postoperative care. Comprehensive assessment includes clinical examination, speech evaluation, and nasopharyngoscopy to determine the anatomical extent and functional impact of the def

Development and validation of the International Classification for Orofacial Pain Algorithm.

Orofacial pain (OFP) encompasses a complex spectrum of conditions that present significant diagnostic challenges. The International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP), introduced in 2020, offers a comprehensive diagnostic framework encompassing nearly 200 distinct OFP conditions. However, its detailed structure can impede practical use in clinical settings. To address this, we developed the International Classification of Orofacial Pain Algorithm (ICOP-AL), a flowchart-based tool designed to simplify the diagnostic process by methodically guiding users through ICOP's hierarchical criteria

A new classification system and an algorithm for the reconstruction of nasal defects.

A new, comprehensive system for scoring and classification of nasal defects is proposed in this article. The soft tissue coverage of the nose is in continuity with the cheeks, glabella and upper lip and the osteocartilaginous infrastructure is in continuity with the two nasofrontal buttresses, the frontal bar and the palate. Soft tissues and the skeletal framework are divided into sub-units and these anatomic features are schematized on a logo. The sub-units are graded on the logo, depending on their gravity in reconstructive strategies. Any given nasal defect is described by shading the invol

A classification system and algorithm for reconstruction of maxillectomy and midfacial defects.

Maxillectomy defects become more complex when critical structures such as the orbit, globe, and cranial base are resected, and reconstruction with distant tissues becomes essential. This study reviews all maxillectomy defects reconstructed immediately using pedicled and free flaps to establish (1) a classification system and (2) an algorithm for reconstruction of these complex problems. Over a 5-year period, 60 flaps were used to reconstruct defects classified as the following: type I, limited maxillectomy (n = 7); type II, subtotal maxillectomy (n = 10); type IIIa, total maxillectomy with pre

An assessment of autistic and parkinsonian movement profiles to inform selective classification algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Movement differences in autism have attracted growing attention in recent years. Anecdotally, autistic movement has been likened to that of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Given that PD assessments are primarily movement-based, it is important to ensure that autistic individuals are not scoring highly on PD diagnostic criteria due to autism-related movement differences. Quantifying overlap in movement profiles and identifying distinguishing features is essential, particularly given increased PD diagnosis rates in the autistic population. METHODS: We conducted the first direct comparison

Classification of occlusal caries severity using spectrophotometric CIELAB measurements and machine learning algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated whether spectrophotometric CIELAB color measurements can support machine-learning (ML) classification of occlusal caries severity based on ICDAS categories. METHODS: Three hundred extracted human teeth were visually classified using ICDAS (0-4) and served as labels for supervised learning. Five occlusal sites per tooth were measured using a spectrophotometer under standardized conditions. Site-level CIELAB values were transformed into engineered color features and aggregated at the tooth level. Teeth were categorised as sound (ICDAS 0), initial carious lesions

sEMG-based Sarcopenia risk classification using empirical mode decomposition and machine learning algorithms.

Early detection of the risk of sarcopenia at younger ages is crucial for implementing preventive strategies, fostering healthy muscle development, and minimizing the negative impact of sarcopenia on health and aging. In this study, we propose a novel sarcopenia risk detection technique that combines surface electromyography (sEMG) signals and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with machine learning algorithms. First, we recorded and preprocessed sEMG data from both healthy and at-risk individuals during various physical activities, including normal walking, fast walking, performing a standard

Feature Selection and Classification of Clinical Datasets Using Bioinspired Algorithms and Super Learner.

A computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that employs a super learner to diagnose the presence or absence of a disease has been developed. Each clinical dataset is preprocessed and split into training set (60%) and testing set (40%). A wrapper approach that uses three bioinspired algorithms, namely, cat swarm optimization (CSO), krill herd (KH) ,and bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) with the classification accuracy of support vector machine (SVM) as the fitness function has been used for feature selection. The selected features of each bioinspired algorithm are stored in three separate data

Analysis of family health history based risk assessment algorithms: classification and data requirements.

Family Health History (FHH) is a valuable and potentially low-cost tool for risk assessment and diagnosis in patient-centered healthcare. In this study, we identified and analyzed existing FHH-based risk assessment algorithms (RAAs) for cardio-vascular disease (CVD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) to guide implementers of electronic health record (EHR) systems regarding the data requirements for computing risk using these algorithms. We found a core set of data elements that are required by most RAAs. While some of these data are available in EHR systems, the patients can be empowered to contribut

EOG Signal Classification with Wavelet and Supervised Learning Algorithms KNN, SVM and DT.

The work carried out in this paper consists of the classification of the physiological signal generated by eye movement called Electrooculography (EOG). The human eye performs simultaneous movements, when focusing on an object, generating a potential change in origin between the retinal epithelium and the cornea and modeling the eyeball as a dipole with a positive and negative hemisphere. Supervised learning algorithms were implemented to classify five eye movements; left, right, down, up and blink. Wavelet Transform was used to obtain information in the frequency domain characterizing the EOG

Oral autoimmune vesicobullous diseases: Classification, clinical presentations, molecular mechanisms, diagnostic algorithms, and management.

Mucocutaneous blistering autoimmune diseases are a group of systemic, rare, chronic disorders characterized by humoral-mediated immunologic mechanisms against epithelial, basement membrane, and subepithelial tissues. Morbidity and mortality can be completely different among these diseases, with outcome being dependent on an early and accurate diagnosis, systemic comorbidities, and the patient's response to treatment. Definitive diagnosis is based on clinical and histopathologic findings. Because clinical presentations among these diseases are often similar, different immunofluorescence tests a

Consensus embedding: theory, algorithms and application to segmentation and classification of biomedical data.

BACKGROUND: Dimensionality reduction (DR) enables the construction of a lower dimensional space (embedding) from a higher dimensional feature space while preserving object-class discriminability. However several popular DR approaches suffer from sensitivity to choice of parameters and/or presence of noise in the data. In this paper, we present a novel DR technique known as consensus embedding that aims to overcome these problems by generating and combining multiple low-dimensional embeddings, hence exploiting the variance among them in a manner similar to ensemble classifier schemes such as Ba
