Trypanosoma brucei Inhibition by Essential Oils from Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Traditionally Used in Cameroon (Azadirachta indica, Aframomum melegueta, Aframomum daniellii, Clausena anisata, Dichrostachys cinerea and Echinops giganteus).

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile components produced by the plant secondary metabolism and consist mainly of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes and, to a minor extent, of aromatic and aliphatic compounds. They are exploited in several fields such as perfumery, food, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics. Essential oils have long-standing uses in the treatment of infectious diseases and parasitosis in humans and animals. In this regard, their therapeutic potential against human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) has not been fully explored. In the present work, we have selected six medicinal and

Isolation of seselin from Clausena anisata (Rutaceae) leaves and its effects on the feeding and development of Lucilia cuprina larvae may explain its use in ethnoveterinary medicine.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The leaves of Clausena anisata are used traditionally to expel maggots from wounds of animals in Zimbabwe. We have previously proved in the laboratory that the plant certainly affects the behaviour and growth of blowfly larvae. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify the active compounds responsible for this activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The acetone extract of Clausena anisata leaf powder was separated by solvent-solvent partition into five fractions. The n-hexane fraction was the most active in the larvicidal assay and therefore subjected to

Some southern African plant species used to treat helminth infections in ethnoveterinary medicine have excellent antifungal activities.

BACKGROUND: Diseases caused by microorganisms and parasites remain a major challenge globally and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa to man and livestock. Resistance to available antimicrobials and the high cost or unavailability of antimicrobials complicates matters. Many rural people use plants to treat these infections. Because some anthelmintics e.g. benzimidazoles also have good antifungal activity we examined the antifungal activity of extracts of 13 plant species used in southern Africa to treat gastrointestinal helminth infections in livestock and in man. METHODS: Antifungal activity

Anthelmintic properties of traditional African and Caribbean medicinal plants: identification of extracts with potent activity against Ascaris suum in vitro.

Ascariasis affects more than 1 billion people worldwide, mainly in developing countries, causing substantial morbidity. Current treatments for Ascaris infection are based on mass drug administration (MDA) with synthetic anthelmintic drugs such as albendazole, however continual re-infection and the threat of drug resistance mean that complementary treatment options would be highly valuable. Here, we screened ethanolic extracts from 29 medicinal plants used in Africa (Ghana) and the Caribbean (US Virgin Islands) for in vitro anthelmintic properties against Ascaris suum, a swine parasite that is

Evaluation of plant species used traditionally to treat myiasis for activity on the survival and development of Lucilia cuprina and Chrysomya marginalis (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Myiasis is a common parasitic problem of livestock responsible for severe economic losses in developing and developed countries. There are a number of challenges with the current control strategy, which depends largely on the use of pharmaceutical chemicals. These include inaccessibility, the increasing concern about pesticide accumulation in the environment and potential development of insecticide resistance in the devastating myiasis-causing flies. Consequently the search for alternatives is important. The use of plants in the treatment of wound myiasis in livestock as an alternative to comm

Dictamnine suppresses the development of pear ring rot induced by Botryosphaeria dothidea infection by disrupting the chitin biosynthesis.

Ring rot induced by Botryosphaeria dothidea is a major cause of growth and postharvest losses in various fruits. There is an urgent need to develop green fungicides due to pesticide resistance and environmental pressure. Here, we demonstrated the efficacy of dictamnine (DIC, 4-methoxyfuro [2,3-β] quinoline, purity 98%), a compound isolated from the stems and leaves of Clausena lansium, in effectively suppressing pear ring rot by inhibiting the mycelial growth of B. dothidea. The median effective concentration of DIC was 15.48 μg/mL. Application of DIC to B. dothidea resulted in structural disr

Integrated machine learning and deep learning-based virtual screening framework identifies novel natural GSK-3β inhibitors for Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder lacking effective therapies. Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β), a key regulator of Aβ aggregation and Tau hyperphosphorylation, has emerged as a promising therapeutic target. Here, we present a novel two-stage virtual screening (VS) framework that integrates an interpretable random forest (RF) model (AUC = 0.99) with a deep learning-based molecular docking platform, KarmaDock (NEF0.5% = 1.0), to identify potential GSK-3β inhibitors from natural products. The model's interpretability was enhanced using SHAP analysis to unco

Integrated multi-omics reveals the mechanisms of sunburn-induced peel browning in wampee fruit.

Sunburn is a major abiotic stress in fruit crops, leading to significant economic losses due to reduced fruit quality and marketability. Wampee (Clausena lansium), a tropical specialty fruit with growing industrial interest, is particularly vulnerable to sunburn-induced peel browning during ripening. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we conducted comprehensive field surveys and integrated physiological, biochemical, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses. Our integrated analyses suggest that strong light exposure is a key environmental trigger for sunburn, while shading treatments effe

Surfactant-Enabled Nanocarriers in Breast Cancer Therapy: Targeted Delivery and Multidrug Resistance Reversal.

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality among women worldwide. Its treatment is complicated by molecular heterogeneity and the frequent development of multidrug resistance (MDR). Conventional drug delivery approaches are often limited by poor aqueous solubility, rapid systemic clearance, non-specific biodistribution, and off-target toxicity. This review will critically explore the possibility of surfactant-based drug delivery systems (DDSs) in addressing the constraints of standard breast cancer treatments. It focuses on the mechanisms by which surfactan
