Harnessing ChatGPT dialogues to address claustrophobia in MRI - A radiographers' education perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The healthcare sector invests significantly in communication skills training, but not always with satisfactory results. Recently, generative Large Language Models, have shown promising results in medical education. This study aims to use ChatGPT to simulate radiographer-patient conversations about the critical moment of claustrophobia management during MRI, exploring how Artificial Intelligence can improve radiographers' communication skills. METHODS: This study exploits specifically designed prompts on ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4 to generate simulated conversations between virtua

Intolerance of short arm cast wear by patients with claustrophobia: case report.

We describe 4 recent patients with latent claustrophobia who presented with dissatisfaction about their short arm casts days after cast application. Although their initial reports of uneasiness did not seem unusual, these patients continued to describe intense squeezing of their hands, excessive tightness, and feelings of being trapped or confined in a manner outside the normal spectrum of patient discomfort. There were no objective findings on cast removal and recasting, but severe subjective symptoms persisted until cast removal.

Claustrophobia in magnetic resonance imaging: A randomised controlled trial of immersive entertainment glasses.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who define themselves as claustrophobic are often unwilling to undergo closed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of immersive entertainment glasses and person-centred care to successfully perform an MRI and to reduce anxiety levels in individuals who identify themselves as having claustrophobia. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2022 in an imaging department of a University Hospital. The MRI scans were performed using a 1.5T Signa Explorer MRI. Participants were randomly assigned to either the

Virtual reality and claustrophobia: multiple components therapy involving game editor virtual environments exposure.

The effectiveness of a multiple components therapy regarding claustrophobia and involving virtual reality (VR) will be demonstrated through a trial which immersed six claustrophobic patients in multiple context-graded enclosed virtual environments (VE) using affordable VR apparatus and software. The results of the questionnaires and behavior tests exhibited a significant reduction in fear towards the enclosed space and quality of life improvement. Such gains were maintained at 6-month follow-up. Presence score indicated the patients felt immersed and present inside the game editor VE.

The treatment of claustrophobia with virtual reality: changes in other phobic behaviors not specifically treated.

This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) exposure in the case of a patient with a diagnosis of two specific phobias (claustrophobia and storms) and panic disorder with agoraphobia. The treatment consisted of eight, individual, VR-graded exposure sessions designed specifically to treat claustrophobia. We obtained data at pretreatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up on several clinical measures. Results point out the effectiveness of the VR procedure for the treatment of claustrophobia. An important change appeared in all measures after treatment compl

Lessons from pilot tests of computer self-help for agora/claustrophobia and panic.

Two pilot tests were made of computer-aided self-help for chronic agora/claustrophobia diagnosed by a psychiatrist. Test 1 was of 17 patients at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP). They had no human clinical help, getting ideas only from the computer on how to do self-exposure therapy and set exposure goals week by week. Patients could attend for 12 sessions. Outcome data were inconsistent across ratings, not always matching clinical impression of progress. Of the 15 patients for whom outcome data were available, 6 improved markedly or moderately on clinical impression. Test 2 was of 6 patients

Brain Circuit of Claustrophobia-like Behavior in Mice Identified by Upstream Tracing of Sighing.

Emotions are distinct patterns of behavioral and physiological responses triggered by stimuli that induce different brain states. Elucidating the circuits is difficult because of challenges in interrogating emotional brain states and their complex outputs. Here, we leverage the recent discovery in mice of a neural circuit for sighing, a simple, quantifiable output of various emotions. We show that mouse confinement triggers sighing, and this "claustrophobic" sighing, but not accompanying tachypnea, requires the same medullary neuromedin B (Nmb)-expressing neurons as physiological sighing. [The Italian version of the "Claustrophobia Questionnaire": validation study and perspectives of use for the occupational physician.].

OBJECTIVES: Aim of our study was to adapt the Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ) to the Italian context. METHODS: In our study, a sample of 50 claustrophobic patients was compared to 50 healthy people (control group). All of them answered the Claustrophobia Questionnaire and the Stait-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y1 and Y2, as well as demographic questions. RESULTS: As it was theoretically expected, our results confirmed the two-factor structure and showed that the Italian version of the CLQ has good psychometric properties. Indeed, it was observed that claustrophobic patients scored higher

Claustrophobia Symptoms in Individuals Undergoing FDG-PET Imaging: Evidence-Based Implications for Nursing Management.

BackgroundFluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is an indispensable imaging modality within precision medical practice. Nevertheless, the enclosed scanner space often triggers claustrophobic distress in scanned patients. This cross-sectional research aimed to quantify the prevalence of claustrophobia among individuals receiving FDG-PET scans and clarify relevant predictive factors linked to this adverse emotional response.MethodsA single-center cross-sectional investigation enrolled a total of 542 participants who completed FDG-PET imaging from March 2025 to November 2025.

Cognitive Restructuring Before Versus After Exposure: Effect on Expectancy and Outcome in Individuals With Claustrophobia.

Maximizing the discrepancy between expected and actual outcomes during exposure (i.e., expectancy violation) is thought to optimize inhibitory learning. The current study examined Craske et al.'s suggestion that engaging in cognitive restructuring (CR) before exposure prematurely reduces expectancy and mitigates outcomes. Participants (N = 93) with claustrophobia were randomly assigned to either 15 minutes of CR before exposure (CR Before) or 15 minutes of CR after exposure (CR After). Although the CR Before condition experienced greater expectancy reduction before exposure than the CR After c

And yet they correlate: psychophysiological activation predicts self-report outcomes of exposure therapy in claustrophobia.

The study examines whether self-reported fear and physiological activation are concordant when claustrophobic patients are exposed to small spaces, whether the measures change in synchrony for individual patients and whether initial activation of measures can predict the outcome of an exposure treatment. Ten patients with claustrophobia participated in six in-vivo exposure sessions with continuous monitoring of self-reported fear and their EKG. Partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)), a measure of hyperventilation, was available in a subsample of patients. While evidence for concordance of

Reduction of claustrophobia with short-bore versus open magnetic resonance imaging: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Claustrophobia is a common problem precluding MR imaging. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether a short-bore or an open magnetic resonance (MR) scanner is superior in alleviating claustrophobia. METHODS: Institutional review board approval and patient informed consent were obtained to compare short-bore versus open MR. From June 2008 to August 2009, 174 patients (139 women; mean age = 53.1 [SD 12.8]) with an overall mean score of 2.4 (SD 0.7, range 0 to 4) on the Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ) and a clinical indication for imaging, were randomly assigned to re

Anesthesia management of a patient with claustrophobia undergoing surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Claustrophobia is a form of phobic anxiety disorder characterized by panic attacks. Anesthesia in patients with claustrophobia poses a challenge because these patients reject all treatments in an enclosed space. When such patients are treated in uncomfortably enclosed environments, it can cause mental distress and even sudden psychiatric death. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 55-year-old man with severe anxiety disorder and claustrophobia who required anesthesia for the surgical treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. This patient had a history of severe anxie

Enhanced Mental Reinstatement of Exposure to Improve Extinction Generalization: A Study on Claustrophobia and MRI Fear.

Fear of enclosed spaces prevents many people from receiving magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Although exposure therapy can effectively treat such fears, reductions in fear during exposure often do not generalize beyond the context in which they took place. This study tested a strategy designed to increase generalization, which involved revisiting the memory of a prior exposure to enhance retrieval of extinction learning. Forty-five participants with claustrophobia that included fear of MRI scans underwent a series of exposures lying inside a narrow cabinet. One week later, participants

[A case report of claustrophobia with panic attack due to an MRI, treated by cognitive-behavioral therapy].

Claustrophobia, this fear of being locked up without being able to escape, affects about 4 to 5% of subjects in the general population. For some years, studies tackle this trouble in the context of medical exam and treatments (MRI, radiotherapy, etc.). Studies show that cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) obtain satisfying results for treating such patients. Here, we present a case report of a CBT intervention for a patient suffering from a cancer and whose claustrophobia impeded her treatment.
