Chikungunya, climate change, and human rights.

Chikungunya is a re-emerging arbovirus that causes significant morbidity and some mortality. Global climate change leading to warmer temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns allow mosquito vectors to thrive at altitudes and at locations where they previously have not, ultimately leading to a spread of mosquito-borne diseases. While mutations to the chikungunya virus are responsible for some portion of the re-emergence, chikungunya epidemiology is closely tied with weather patterns in Southeast Asia. Extrapolation of this regional pattern, combined with known climate factors impacting the

Climate change and decreasing herbicide persistence.

A herbicide degradation model, using real weather data for the period 1980-2001, has been used to estimate the change in persistence of autumn-applied isoproturon over this period. The results suggest that soil residues fell to the minimum for weed control on average approximately 30 days earlier over the last 5 years of this period than in the first 5 years, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 25% in the duration of weed control. This decline in persistence is attributed to increasing soil temperature. The results are discussed in relation to recent observations and predictions on clim

Global climate change and infectious diseases.

The effects of global climate change on infectious diseases are hypothetical until more is known about the degree of change in temperature and humidity that will occur. Diseases most likely to increase in their distribution and severity have three-factor (agent, vector, and human being) and four-factor (plus vertebrate reservoir host) ecology. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes may move northward and have more rapid metamorphosis with global warming. These mosquitoes transmit dengue virus, and Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever virus. The faster metamorphosis and a shorter extrins

FIGIJ Advocacy Statement on Climate Change.

Climate change is an escalating global crisis that disproportionately threatens the health and rights of children and adolescents, with girls facing particularly heightened vulnerability. Increasing temperatures, extreme weather events, food and water insecurity, and exposure to environmental toxins directly and indirectly affect sexual and reproductive health. These impacts include altered timing of menarche, worsened dysmenorrhea, increased risks of subfertility and pregnancy complications, and reduced access to essential reproductive health services. Broader climate-related instability furt

Climate change, microplastics, and male infertility.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Semen quality is on the decline. While the etiology is unknown, recent literature suggests there may be a relationship between climate change, environmental toxins and male fertility. This review relays new information regarding associations between our environment and male infertility. RECENT FINDINGS: Several recent studies have documented a negative association between heat stress and spermatogenesis, which suggests that climate change may be a factor in declining in sperm counts. The influence of particle pollution on spermatogenesis has also been recently investigated,

Ticks, Human Babesiosis and Climate Change.

The effects of current and future global warming on the distribution and activity of the primary ixodid vectors of human babesiosis (caused by Babesia divergens, B. venatorum and B. microti) are discussed. There is clear evidence that the distributions of both Ixodes ricinus, the vector in Europe, and I. scapularis in North America have been impacted by the changing climate, with increasing temperatures resulting in the northwards expansion of tick populations and the occurrence of I. ricinus at higher altitudes. Ixodes persulcatus, which replaces I. ricinus in Eurasia and temperate Asia, is p

[Climate change and systemic fungal infections].

BACKGROUND: Climate change may cause profound and complex changes in the prevalence of infectious diseases. Obligate pathogenic fungi causing endemic mycoses and the agents of cryptococcosis are environmental pathogens adapted to environmental niches. They may be exposed to changing climatic conditions, which may change the epidemiology of human infections. OBJECTIVES: To review documented changes in the epidemiology of endemic fungal infections and cryptococcosis. To review evidence that changing climate is a potential mechanism for changes in the epidemiology of these infections. METHODS:

Bison body size and climate change.

The relationship between body size and temperature of mammals is poorly resolved, especially for large keystone species such as bison (Bison bison). Bison are well represented in the fossil record across North America, which provides an opportunity to relate body size to climate within a species. We measured the length of a leg bone (calcaneal tuber, DstL) in 849 specimens from 60 localities that were dated by stratigraphy and 14C decay. We estimated body mass (M) as M = (DstL/11.49)3. Average annual temperature was estimated from δ18O values in the ice cores from Greenland. Calcaneal tuber le

Global climate change and human health.

Global climate change is a vexing economic, environmental, and public health problem. Climatologists have documented a rise in global average temperature that is unprecedented since the Industrial Revolution. This temperature change correlates with increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases, which largely are of human origin. Global climate change is likely to profoundly affect global health. This article summarizes the science of climatology and global climate change caused by human actions and reviews potential health effects.

Shifting growth-climate limitations in Canadian forests under recent climate change.

INTRODUCTION: Although the etiology of osteoporosis is different between men and women, the underlying pathophysiological mechanism is similar, namely an absolute or relative increase in bone resorption, leading to progressive bone loss. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 is a growth factor in human bone, which is produced by osteoblasts, and which has various effects on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The aim of our study was to determine serum TGF-beta1 levels in male patients with idiopathic osteoporosis. METHODS: Twenty five males with idiopathic osteoporosis and 25 age-matched controls

How relevant is climate change research for climate change policy? An empirical analysis based on Overton data.

Climate change is an ongoing topic in nearly all areas of society since many years. A discussion of climate change without referring to scientific results is not imaginable. This is especially the case for policies since action on the macro scale is required to avoid costly consequences for society. In this study, we deal with the question of how research on climate change and policy are connected. In 2019, the new Overton database of policy documents was released including links to research papers that are cited by policy documents. The use of results and recommendations from research on clim

Climate change anxiety among psychiatric outpatients: associations with psychiatric symptoms and experience with climate change and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND: Climate change anxiety (CCA) has emerged as a significant psychological response to the global climate crisis. While prior research focuses on general populations, evidence derived from psychiatric clinical samples remains scarce. This study aims to investigate CCA levels and their associations with psychiatric symptoms, resilience, and disaster-related experiences among psychiatric outpatients. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 528 psychiatric outpatients aged 18-64 years at a university hospital in South Korea. The participants completed the Korean version of th

Strange plants and the weirding climate: parasitic plant physiology under climate change.

Parasitic flowering plants are often seen as keystone species due to the broad influence they exert on communities worldwide. Positive and negative effects associated with parasitic plant infestation have been documented for a variety of species in multiple locations and under different experimental conditions. However, the impact of the different drivers of climate change on these plants has only recently begun to be analyzed in more detail. In this context, most studies have dealt with modeling future distribution ranges of parasite species and assessing potential ecological impacts. Buildin

Pollinator Dependency and Regional Climate Affect Crop Yield Development Under Climate Change.

Climate change is severely impacting insects and flowering plants in different ways. While effects on plants, pollinators and their interactions have been amply discussed, subsequent impacts on pollination are rarely assessed. Understanding climate-change effects on pollination is particularly important for insect-pollinated crops as it ultimately influences yield and hence food production. This study investigated crop-yield changes over 35 years in two climatically distinct regions in Germany (cool-moist vs. warm-dry). Yield differences among crops showing different levels of pollinator depen

Wastewater Management under Global Climate Change Conditions.

Urban wastewater systems were historically designed under assumptions of climatic stationarity; however, climate change is rapidly altering the boundary conditions under which they operate. In this Perspective, we synthesize emerging evidence to conceptualize wastewater systems as climate-responsive infrastructure embedded within dynamic environmental feedbacks. We propose an input-output boundary framework to characterize climate change-driven alterations in wastewater systems. On the input side, climate change affects wastewater systems through three primary pathways: increased flow variabil

Plant Nitrogen Assimilation: A Climate Change Perspective.

Of all the essential macronutrients necessary for plant growth and development, nitrogen is required in the greatest amounts. Nitrogen is a key component of important biomolecules like proteins and has high nutritive importance for humans and other animals. Climate change factors, such as increasing levels of carbon dioxide, increasing temperatures, and increasing watering regime, directly or indirectly influence plant nitrogen uptake and assimilation dynamics. The impacts of these stressors can directly threaten our primary source of nitrogen as obtained from the soil by plants. In this revie
