From the biomedical model to the climate-sensitive model: A necessary adjustment for research ethics committees.

Ethics committees are not yet fully integrated into the response to climate change, whether they are national ethics committees (NECs) that issue advisory opinions or research ethics committees (RECs) that review research protocols. This article took this observation as its starting point to consider how ethics committees could support to more accurately assess the consequences of climate change on health, through a lens that focuses on the health of younger and future generations yet within the wider context of ecosystems. From November 2024 to November 2025, the R(H)OPE- The Right To An Open

Childhood malaria case incidence in Malawi between 2004 and 2017: spatio-temporal modelling of climate and non-climate factors.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission is influenced by a complex interplay of factors including climate, socio-economic, environmental factors and interventions. Malaria control efforts across Africa have shown a mixed impact. Climate driven factors may play an increasing role with climate change. Efforts to strengthen routine facility-based monthly malaria data collection across Africa create an increasingly valuable data source to interpret burden trends and monitor control programme progress. A better understanding of the association with other climatic and non-climatic drivers of malaria incide

Climate-driven shifts in lumpy skin disease risk across Iran: Insights from ensemble species distribution models.

This study aimed to identify the environmental determinants influencing the distribution of lumpy skin disease and to predict changes in its spatial distribution risk and potential geographic range across Iran under future climate change scenarios using ensemble Species Distribution Models (SDMs). To this end, following data cleaning and quality control of 3654 disease occurrence records, a total of 2849 presence points recorded between 2013 and 2024 were retained for model development. The CTA, GAM, GBM, and RF algorithms were implemented within an ensemble modelling framework. The final ense

Toward Eliminating the Decades-Old "Too Zonal and Too Equatorward" Storm-Track Bias in Climate Models.

Generations of climate models exhibit biases in their representation of North Atlantic storm tracks, which tend to be too far near the equator and too zonal. Additionally, models have difficulties simulating explosive cyclone growth. These biases are one of the reasons for the uncertainties in projections of future climate over Europe, and the underlying causes have yet to be determined. All three biases are shown to be related, and diabatic processes are pointed to as a likely cause. To demonstrate this, two hemispherically symmetric storm tracks forming downstream of an idealized sea surface

Artificial intelligence models for dengue outbreak prediction in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam under climate change.

Dengue fever (DF) remains one of the most significant mosquito-borne diseases in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. This study evaluates the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, including Machine Learning and Deep Learning approaches to forecast weekly district-level DF cases and to identify the optimal predictive model. DF notifications and meteorological data (temperature, humidity, rainfall) from 24 districts in HCMC (2015-2022) were standardized to epidemiological weeks and spatially interpolated using Inverse Distance Weighti

Assessment of climate-coccidioidomycosis model: model sensitivity for assessing climatologic effects on the risk of acquiring coccidioidomycosis.

Understanding the predictive relationships between climate variability and coccidioidomycosis is of great importance for the development of an effective public health decision-support system. Preliminary regression-based climate modeling studies have shown that about 80% of the variance in seasonal coccidioidomycosis incidence for southern Arizona can be explained by precipitation and dust-related climate scenarios prior to and concurrent with outbreaks. In earlier studies, precipitation during the normally arid foresummer 1.5-2 years prior to the season of exposure was found to be the dominan

Distribution patterns of Abietinella species under climate change across multiple spatiotemporal scales based on ecological niche models.

INTRODUCTION: Abietinella, a dominant genus in the understory, only comprises two species Abietinella abietina (Hedw.) Fleisch. and Abietinella hystricosa (Mitt.) Broth. They can influence forest regeneration and development. However, research on the geographical distribution patterns of Abietinella is limited, which led to the absence of a method that can help explore how climate change affects the progress of species speciation and species diversity and their ecological functions for Abietinella. METHODS: We compared the performance of different ecological niche models and then chose MaxEnt

Climate change impacts on Xanthium strumarium distribution: Integrating species distribution models with rhizosphere microbiome analysis in China.

Global environmental changes increasingly alter species distributions, yet their effects on plants serving both ecological and economic functions remain inadequately explored. We examined Xanthium strumarium, a species with medicinal and invasive properties, throughout China using integrated approaches: species distribution modeling (Biomod2), niche analysis (Ecospat), and rhizosphere microbiome profiling (Tax4Fun). Our findings demonstrate that human footprint index (66.6% variable importance), elevation, and topographic slope primarily determine current distribution patterns. Future climate

Projections of the probability of the "Elfsteden" ice skating tour under future climate scenarios using lake models.

The Elfstedentocht is a culturally significant long distance ice skating tour held in Friesland, the Netherlands. The frequency of the tour has been declining over the last century due to increasingly mild winters. This study investigates the probability of an "Elfsteden" ice skating tour under different future IPCC climate scenarios: SSP1-2.6 (low emissions), SSP2-4.5 (intermediate emissions) and SSP5-8.5 (high emissions). Two different ice growth models are employed to produce projections of ice thickness for the future. The ice growth models are driven by sub-daily meteorological forcing fr

Climate-based modelling and forecasting of dengue in three endemic departments of Peru.

Amid profound climate change, incidence of dengue continues to rise and expand in distribution across the world. Here, we analysed dengue in three coastal departments of Peru which have recently experienced public health emergencies during the worst dengue crises in Latin American history. We developed a climate-based spatiotemporal modelling framework to model monthly incidence of new dengue cases in Piura, Tumbes, and Lambayeque over 140 months from 2010 to 2021. The framework enabled accurate description of in-sample and out-of-sample dengue incidence trends across the departments, as well

Comparing storm resolving models and climates via unsupervised machine learning.

Global storm-resolving models (GSRMs) have gained widespread interest because of the unprecedented detail with which they resolve the global climate. However, it remains difficult to quantify objective differences in how GSRMs resolve complex atmospheric formations. This lack of comprehensive tools for comparing model similarities is a problem in many disparate fields that involve simulation tools for complex data. To address this challenge we develop methods to estimate distributional distances based on both nonlinear dimensionality reduction and vector quantization. Our approach automaticall

Modelling the effects of global climate change on Chikungunya transmission in the 21st century.

The arrival and rapid spread of the mosquito-borne viral disease Chikungunya across the Americas is one of the most significant public health developments of recent years, preceding and mirroring the subsequent spread of Zika. Globalization in trade and travel can lead to the importation of these viruses, but climatic conditions strongly affect the efficiency of transmission in local settings. In order to direct preparedness for future outbreaks, it is necessary to anticipate global regions that could become suitable for Chikungunya transmission. Here, we present global correlative niche model

Modelling the impact of climate and the environment on the spatiotemporal dynamics of Lyme borreliosis in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a predominant vector-borne disease in Europe, with Germany reporting endemic circulation for at least the past two decades. Climatic and environmental conditions are key drivers of tick activity, and human exposure to tick bites. Understanding the climatic and environmental factors driving LB dynamics can help devise decision-support tools to guide interventions and adaptation strategies. METHODS: Using a Bayesian modelling framework, we assessed the delayed and nonlinear associations between climate variation and land use change and monthly LB case counts

Modelling the impact of climate change on the distribution and abundance of tsetse in Northern Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is predicted to impact the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases. Tsetse flies (Glossina) transmit species of Trypanosoma that cause human and animal African trypanosomiasis. A previous modelling study showed that temperature increases between 1990 and 2017 can explain the observed decline in abundance of tsetse at a single site in the Mana Pools National Park of Zimbabwe. Here, we apply a mechanistic model of tsetse population dynamics to predict how increases in temperature may have changed the distribution and relative abundance of Glossina pallidipes acr

Modeling the Impact of White-Plague Coral Disease in Climate Change Scenarios.

Coral reefs are in global decline, with coral diseases increasing both in prevalence and in space, a situation that is expected only to worsen as future thermal stressors increase. Through intense surveillance, we have collected a unique and highly resolved dataset from the coral reef of Eilat (Israel, Red Sea), that documents the spatiotemporal dynamics of a White Plague Disease (WPD) outbreak over the course of a full season. Based on modern statistical methodologies, we develop a novel spatial epidemiological model that uses a maximum-likelihood procedure to fit the data and assess the tran

Risk assessment and climate adaptation research for agricultural cultivation and water resource systems within rural green production models.

In the context of global climate change, analyzing the evolution patterns of climate and extreme hydrological events in rural watersheds, and evaluating the adaptability of green agricultural production methods, are crucial for building climate-resilient agricultural systems. Taking the Chen Village Green Agriculture Demonstration Zone in Jiangsu Province as the research object, this study integrates historical observations and multi-scenario reanalysis data to systematically reveal the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of regional climate and extreme precipitation during the historical

Modeling zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis incidence in central Tunisia from 2009-2015: Forecasting models using climate variables as predictors.

Transmission of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) depends on the presence, density and distribution of Leishmania major rodent reservoir and the development of these rodents is known to have a significant dependence on environmental and climate factors. ZCL in Tunisia is one of the most common forms of leishmaniasis. The aim of this paper was to build a regression model of ZCL cases to identify the relationship between ZCL occurrence and possible risk factors, and to develop a predicting model for ZCL's control and prevention purposes. Monthly reported ZCL cases, environmental and bioclim

Climate and recruitment limitation of hosts: the dynamics of American cutaneous leishmaniasis seen through semi-mechanistic seasonal models.

Diseases cycle as a response to endogenous and exogenous factors. For infectious diseases caused by vector-transmitted pathogens, the exogenous factors are commonly equated to climatic forces and the endogenous factors to the recruitment of new susceptible individuals. Mathematical models that explicitly (parametrically) consider both types of factor are, however, very rare. An approach is presented to model the effects of endogenous and exogenous factors parametrically, using a time series for American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) from Costa Rica. The seasonality of the disease is modelled u

Regional gene-environment association models improve insights into agents and targets of selection by climate in Mimulus guttatus.

Genotype-environment association (GEA) approaches identify genetic variants that likely contribute to adaptation along environmental gradients. These associations can inform predictive models of maladaptation risk and evolutionary rescue in future climates. However, because population structure and climate parameters often co-vary, tradeoffs arise between accounting for population structure to reduce false positive associations and removing true positives. Here, we examine whether conducting GEA analyses at multiple spatial scales provides more informative associations by mitigating confounds

Impact of projected climate and socioeconomic scenarios on state-wise annual dengue incidence in India using ensemble models.

India, the world's most populous country, has reported over 1 million dengue cases and ~3,000 deaths between 2007 and 2022. With the annual state-wise data, we examined the spatiotemporal distribution of dengue in 28 states and eight union territories for 16 years across India. Using state-wise data on climatic variables, socio-economic inequities and land-use land-cover changes, potential determinants for the state-wise transmission were identified through a supervised regression model. The identified determinants were then mapped to various novel developmental scenarios, which were designed
