Human pelvis and long bones reveal differential preservation of ancient population history and migration out of Africa.

One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a wilhin-pupulation decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30

Niche Divergence in the South American Freshwater Crustacean Aegla Provides Insights Into Its Diversification.

Understanding how taxa diverge within their ecological niches is essential for revealing mechanisms driving biodiversity and biogeographic patterns, particularly in regions with complex environmental gradients. Ecological niche dynamics have profound implications for speciation and species distributions, yet remain underexplored in freshwater organisms. Here, we investigated ecological niche variation among clades of Aegla (Aeglidae), a diverse freshwater crustacean genus endemic to southern South America, to uncover links between niche differentiation and lineage diversification. Pliocene Forest Fragmentation Shaped Speciation in Tropical Asia's Giant Squirrels (Ratufa).

Tropical Asia's complex, dynamic geological and climatic history, coupled with its diverse topography, provides a fascinating setting to study evolutionary processes driving high biodiversity. This phylogenomic research reconstructs the evolutionary history of the strictly arboreal and forest-dependent Oriental Giant Squirrels (Ratufa) to gain insights into the interplay between paleo-forest distribution and regional diversification. By analysing genomic data (complete mitochondrial genomes and approximately 4000 nuclear ultraconserved elements) from historic museum specimens and conducting di

High resolution physically based modelling reveals malaria incidence reduction by vector control measures.

Malaria continues to cause over 600,000 deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa, disproportionately affecting children under five. Despite sustained control efforts, transmission remains highly sensitive to local environmental and climatic variability, underscoring the need for physically grounded models capable of capturing these dynamics. To address this challenge, we developed a high-resolution hybrid modeling framework linking WRF/WRF-Hydro and VECTRI. The framework integrates atmospheric, hydrological, ecological, and intervention processes at 1 km and 50 m resolutions and includes a new co

Temporal trends in leptospirosis incidence and association with climatic and environmental factors in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with epidemic potential, especially after heavy rainfall causing river, urban and flash floods. Certain features of Santa Catarina's coastal region influence these processes. Using negative binomial regression, we investigated trends in the incidence of leptospirosis in the six municipalities with the highest epidemic peaks between 2000 and 2015 and the climatic and environmental variables associated with the occurrence of the disease. Incidence was highest in 2008 and 2011, and peaks occurred in the same month or month after disasters. Incidence showed a strong sea

Hydro-geochemical aspects of Mediterranean temporary ponds in western Crete.

The hydrologic and geochemical conditions that prevail in Mediterranean temporary ponds (MTPs), create a unique environment for many rare and endangered species. Mediterranean temporary ponds are habitats of high ecological value, which are vulnerable to imminent climatic changes, as well as to human activities. This article examines the hydrology and the nitrogen and phosphorous geochemical cycles of four MTPs in Crete. Field and laboratory studies provided the necessary information for the development of a conceptual understanding of the hydrologic and biogeochemical processes that affect th

Racing against change: understanding dispersal and persistence to improve species' conservation prospects.

Climate change is contributing to the widespread redistribution, and increasingly the loss, of species. Geographical range shifts among many species were detected rapidly after predictions of the potential importance of climate change were specified 35 years ago: species are shifting their ranges towards the poles and often to higher elevations in mountainous areas. Early tests of these predictions were largely qualitative, though extraordinarily rapid and broadly based, and statistical tests distinguishing between climate change and other global change drivers provided quantitative evidence t

Population genetics of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in India reveals high connectivity and weak geographic and climatic structuring.

Understanding the genetic structure and diversity of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) populations is critical for predicting transmission dynamics and implementing effective vector control strategies. This study assessed the genetic diversity, population structure, and influence of geography and climate on Ae. aegypti populations across India. Of 308 genotyped individuals, 257 high-quality genotypes from 13 collection sites across 6 climatic regions were retained for analysis using 10 microsatellite loci. High genetic diversity was observed across all populations, consistent with substantial eff

Major and trace elements in rice paddy soils in Sri Lanka with special emphasis on regions with endemic chronic kidney disease of undetermined origin.

Environmental exposure to trace elements has been widely suspected as an etiological factor for the emergence of chronic kidney disease of undetermined origin (CKDu) that prevails in certain districts of the dry zone areas of Sri Lanka. Contaminated rice can be act as a host for potentially toxic trace elements that ultimately led to health hazards; thus, rice soils were investigated in detail, giving particular attentions to identified CKDu hotspots. A total of 102 rice soil samples were collected from main climatic zones viz. wet and dry zones including CKDu hotspots. In addition to pH, elec

Genomic, morphological and physiological data support fast ecotypic differentiation and incipient speciation in an alpine diving beetle.

An intricate interplay between evolutionary and demographic processes has frequently resulted in complex patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity in alpine lineages, posing serious challenges to species delimitation and biodiversity conservation planning. Here we integrate genomic data, geometric morphometric analyses and thermal tolerance experiments to explore the role of Pleistocene climatic changes and adaptation to alpine environments on patterns of genomic and phenotypic variation in diving beetles from the taxonomically complex Agabus bipustulatus species group. Autonomy-Supportive Teaching Enhances Prosocial and Reduces Antisocial Behavior via Classroom Climate and Psychological Needs: A Multilevel Randomized Control Intervention.

Autonomy-supportive teaching increases prosocial and decreases antisocial behavior. Previous research showed that these effects occur because autonomy-supportive teaching improves students' need states (a student-level process). However, the present study investigated whether these effects also occur because autonomy-supportive teaching improves the classroom climate (a classroom-level process). Teachers from 80 physical education classrooms were randomly assigned to participate (or not) in an autonomy-supportive teaching intervention, while their 2,227 secondary-grade students reported their

The underexplored links between cancer and the internal body climate: Implications for cancer prevention and treatment.

In order to effectively manage and cure cancer we should move beyond the general view of cancer as a random process of genetic alterations leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation or simply a predictable evolutionary process involving selection for traits that increase cell fitness. In our view, cancer is a systemic disease that involves multiple interactions not only among cells within tumors or between tumors and surrounding tissues but also with the entire organism and its internal "milieu". We define the internal body climate as an emergent property resulting from spatial and temporal in

Applying a climate lens framework to the World Health Organization's maternal and perinatal intervention recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change threatens global health, with pregnant individuals and newborns facing some of the gravest consequences. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published nearly 300 maternal and perinatal health recommendations; a structured approach integrating climate change considerations into guideline development has heretofore not been established. METHODS: We developed and applied a six-criteria climate lens framework (climate sensitivity, sustainability, climate-improved alternatives, mitigation, community resilience, and accountability) through an iterative process invol

Climate change anxiety, hope, and pro-environmental behavioral intention during pregnancy: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognized as a psychosocial stressor with potential implications for women's mental health, particularly during pregnancy-a period characterized by heightened emotional sensitivity and future-oriented concern. Understanding how climate-related emotions relate to behavioral processes in this population remains limited. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between climate change anxiety, hope for climate change mitigation, and pro-environmental behavioral intention among pregnant women. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectio

Equine sweating and anhidrosis Part 2: anhidrosis.

The condition of anhidrosis is described in this review, and the latest theories on the causal factors are explored. The evidence supports the hypothesis that anhidrosis is an inappropriate response to prolonged climatic stress (generally combined heat and high humidity), which can be evoked in a small (approximately 10 +/- 5%) proportion of the equine population. It is caused by gradual failure of the glandular secretory cell processes, initiated by desensitization and subsequent down-regulation of the cell receptors as a result of continued adrenaline-driven hyperactivity. It progresses thro

Wastewater Management under Global Climate Change Conditions.

Urban wastewater systems were historically designed under assumptions of climatic stationarity; however, climate change is rapidly altering the boundary conditions under which they operate. In this Perspective, we synthesize emerging evidence to conceptualize wastewater systems as climate-responsive infrastructure embedded within dynamic environmental feedbacks. We propose an input-output boundary framework to characterize climate change-driven alterations in wastewater systems. On the input side, climate change affects wastewater systems through three primary pathways: increased flow variabil

Southern ocean carbon and heat impact on climate.

The Southern Ocean greatly contributes to the regulation of the global climate by controlling important heat and carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and the ocean. Rates of climate change on decadal timescales are therefore impacted by oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, yet too little is known about these processes. Limitations come both from the lack of observations in this extreme environment and its inherent sensitivity to intermittent processes at scales that are not well captured in current Earth system models. The Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate pr

Analysis of the transcription of genes encoding heat shock proteins (hsp) in Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, 1762 (Diptera: Culicidae), maintained under climatic conditions provided by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change) for the year 2100.

Human actions intensify the greenhouse effect, aggravating climate changes in the Amazon and elsewhere in the world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) foresees a global increase of up to 4.5 °C and 850 ppm CO2 (above current levels) by 2100. This will impact the biology of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, vector of Dengue, Zika, urban Yellow Fever and Chikungunya. Heat shock proteins are associated with adaptations to anthropic environments and the interaction of some viruses with the vector. The transcription of the hsp26, hsp83 and hsc70 genes of an A. aegypti population, maint

Use of evidence and expertise in UK climate governance: the case of the Cumbrian Coal Mine.

There is an overall scientific consensus that no new coal mines can be developed, if the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rises is to be met. Yet in December 2022, following a lengthy Public Inquiry, the UK Government approved the development of Woodhouse Colliery in Cumbria. In doing so, it accepted the claim that the coal mine would be 'zero carbon' and could even result in lower global emissions overall. As this paper demonstrates, there is no independent evidence to support these claims, whilst a large body of independent evidence comes to the opposite conclusion. This paper use

Non-Cholera Vibrios: The Microbial Barometer of Climate Change.

There is a growing interest in the role of climate change in driving the spread of waterborne infectious diseases, such as those caused by bacterial pathogens. One particular group of pathogenic bacteria - vibrios - are a globally important cause of diseases in humans and aquatic animals. These Gram-negative bacteria, including the species Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae, grow in warm, low-salinity waters, and their abundance in the natural environment mirrors ambient environmental temperatures. In a rapidly warming marine environment, there are greater numbers o
