Patient satisfaction after closed reduction of nasal fractures.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of closed reduction from a patient's point of view, because there is increasing evidence that closed reduction of nasal fractures fails to address deformities of the cartilaginous nasal framework and the septum. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 62 patients who underwent a closed reduction of nasal fracture between July 1, 2002, and June 30, 2005. All patients were interviewed regarding the esthetic and functional outcomes after closed reduction. RESULTS: Eighteen patients (29%) expressed dissatisfaction with the esthetic outcome of the reducti

Closed reduction of fractured anterior wall of the frontal bone.

The authors report two cases of closed reduction of the anterior wall of the frontal bone. In the first case, the fractured segment was successfully reduced with a small periosteal elevator. In the second case, a tip of the periosteal elevator was broken during maneuvering the fractured bone and lost into the sinus cavity. The sinus was opened to retrieve the broken piece and repaired by internal fixation. The technique has a few merits: (1) the procedure is simple; (2) the operation time is short; and (3) only a small incision is needed.

Comparative analysis of closed reduction with external fixation versus closed reduction with percutaneous pinning for distal radius fractures.

Closed reduction with external fixation (CREF) and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) are commonly used surgical interventions to treat distal radius fractures. However, there is no consensus regarding the optimal management of these types of fractures. Therefore, this study aimed to compare these treatments' clinical and radiological outcomes in two subgroups of distal radius fractures. The patients who were ≥ 18 and were referred for the diagnosis of type I and III (Fernandez) distal radius fractures were treated with one of these two methods, which have been evaluated through a retrospective analy

Adequacy of pain relief in closed manipulative reduction of fracture and dislocation.

Adequate pain relief is a requisite for a successful closed manipulative reduction (CMR) of fractures and dislocations. This prospective study was undertaken to assess the mode and adequacy of pain relief given to patients undergoing such procedures at Seremban Hospital from the 1st April to the 31st May 2001. All patients with fractures and dislocations scheduled to undergo CMR were included in this study. The type of sedative agents and analgesia administered were recorded. Demographic data and the type of fracture or dislocation of the selected patients were documented. A visual analogue sc

The Effect of Delayed Closed Reduction of Supracondylar Fracture on Perioperative Complications.

Background Supracondylar fracture is one of the most frequent pediatric traumas and surgically managed fractures. Multiple factors can contribute to delaying surgical management of supracondylar fracture, which is thought to lead to difficult reduction and more complications. Surgical treatment during the nighttime shift (from 20:00-8:00) might increase the complication rate including vascular injury, nerve injury, and the need to convert closed reduction to open due to multiple reasons including nontrained staff, exhausted on-call team, and other reasons. Objectives We are looking into the ef

Does a closed reduction improve aesthetical and functional outcome after nasal fracture?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSES: How closed reduction (CR) to repair a nasal fracture affects the patient's quality of life (QoL) has not been investigated. Here, we assessed QoL before and after CR using disease-specific questionnaires and compared the QoL scores of patients with nasal fractures with normative scores from a reference cohort. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 96 patients with nasal fractures undergoing CR. Patients were interviewed about aesthetic, functional, and QoL issues before and after surgery using the Functional Rhinoplasty Outcome Inventory (FROI-17) and the Rhinoplas

A visual servo-based teleoperation robot system for closed diaphyseal fracture reduction.

Common fracture treatments include open reduction and intramedullary nailing technology. However, these methods have disadvantages such as intraoperative X-ray radiation, delayed union or nonunion and postoperative rotation. Robots provide a novel solution to the aforementioned problems while posing new challenges. Against this scientific background, we develop a visual servo-based teleoperation robot system. In this article, we present a robot system, analyze the visual servo-based control system in detail and develop path planning for fracture reduction, inverse kinematics, and output forces

Displaced fracture of the femoral neck in children: open versus closed reduction.

We have investigated whether early anatomical open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) reduces the incidence of complications of fracture of the femoral neck in children, including avascular necrosis, compared with closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF). We retrospectively reviewed 27 such fractures (15 type-II and 12 type-III displaced fractures) in children younger than 16 years of age seen in our hospital between February 1989 and March 2007. We divided the patients into three groups according to the quality of the reduction (anatomical, acceptable, and unacceptable) and the clini

Fracture dislocations of Lisfranc's joint treated with closed reduction and percutaneous fixation.

We reviewed 42 patients (mean age 37.7+/-14.2 years) with closed fracture dislocations of Lisfranc's joint treated with percutaneous screw fixation. Mean follow-up was 58.4+/-17.3 months. The aim was to compare dislocations in which a perfect anatomical reduction had been reached with dislocations in which reduction was only near anatomical. The mean American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score for all patients was 81.0+/-13.5. There were no significant differences in outcome scores between patients with perfect anatomical reduction and patients with near anatomical reduction. However, pa

Supracondylar fractures of the femur in children: closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of displaced fractures.

The authors reviewed nine children with 10 displaced supracondylar femoral fractures that were treated by closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. The average age of the patients was 8.3 years (range 5-13). After removal of the pins and plaster at 5 weeks, full range of movement was regained within 3 weeks. At late follow-up (average 7.4 years [range 4-10]), seven of the eight patients reviewed (nine fractures) had a satisfactory result. One patient had a valgus deformity of 6 degrees. There was no growth plate arrest and no leg length discrepancy. Intra-articular pin placement was avoided,

Closed reduction of the isolated anterior frontal sinus fracture via percutaneous screw placement.

Fractures of the frontal sinus are a common maxillofacial trauma and constitute 5-15% of all maxillofacial fractures. Conventional surgical approaches include the coronal flap, direct cutaneous incision, and endoscopic techniques. Minimally invasive techniques have recently been described for the reduction of the isolated anterior frontal sinus fracture via a closed approach. The medical records and radiological findings of all patients who underwent surgical treatment for anterior frontal sinus fractures from January 2009 to December 2013 at the study hospital in Florence, Italy, were reviewe

Inadvertent Radial Head Inversion During Closed Reduction of a Pediatric Radial Neck Fracture.

Management of displaced pediatric radial neck fractures can be fraught with challenges. This unique case presents an 11-year-old female with a Salter-Harris type II radial neck fracture and how her radial head overturned 180° with the articular surface facing the radial shaft rather than the capitellum during closed manipulation under anesthesia. The malreduction subsequently required open reduction and highlights the importance of a careful stepwise approach to managing markedly displaced radial neck fractures. After closed reduction, meticulous assessment of intraoperative imaging when deter
