Kielmeyera coriacea Mart. (Clusiaceae), known as "Pau Santo", is used to treat several tropical diseases. The hydroethanolic extract (HE) of Kielmeyera coriacea stems and its semi-pure dichloromethane constituent (DCM) produced an anti-immobility effect in rats submitted to the forced swimming test (FST), suggesting a antidepressant-like profile. This study evaluated the effect of intra-median raphe nucleus (MRN) microinjection of 1,3,7-trihydroxy-2-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-xanthone, present in large quantity in the HE from Kielmeyera coriacea stems, on immobility behaviour in the FST in rats. PREMISE: Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) are characterized by frequent fog immersion and host a rich epiphyte community. Epiphytes rely on atmospheric inputs of water, making them susceptible to reductions in fog immersion, which are predicted with climate change.
METHODS: We experimentally reduced the fog in a Peruvian TMCF to examine the ability of eight abundant species of vascular epiphytes in the families Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Ericaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Piperaceae and Clusiaceae to respond to reduced fog immersion via plasticity in morphological and physiological traits.

In order to evaluate the possible use of the leaves instead of the roots of Vismia guineensis as a new source for the traditional use of this drug, the chemical composition of both organs were compared by HPLC-UV/PAD and HPLC-MS analyses. The leaves are analysed here for the first time. The results show the presence of five major classes of secondary metabolites having specific chromophores: anthraquinones, vismiones, flavonoids, xanthones and benzophenones. The molecular weights and characteristic fragments, compared with previous EI or HPLC-MS literature data, allowed the partial identificat

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), Amyloid beta peptide (Aβ), the primary constituent of senile plaques, has been documented as triggering oxidative stress and leading to the death of neuronal cells. Therefore, this research aims to investigate how the Cratoxylum formosum (L.) leaf extract mitigates oxidative stress and cellular damage induced by Aβ in SH-SY5Y cells. The SH-SY5Y cells were treated with Cratoxylum formosum (L.) extract both with and without Aβ25-35. Neuroprotection was evaluated through viability and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, accompanied by an analysis of various mechanisms

Five isolated xanthones from the C. cochinchinense and G. mangostana were evaluated and tested for antibacterial activities. Isolated 4 and 5 exhibited potent anti-MRSA and P. aeruginosa activity, but showed poor pharmacokinetic properties via ADMET prediction. It led us to improve pharmacokinetic properties of 4 and 5 by partially modifying them in acidic condition yielding fourteen analogues. It was found that analogues 4b, 4d and 5b possessed proper pharmacokinetic properties, while only 4b exhibited the best anti-MRSA and P. aeruginosa activity. The SEM results indicated that 4b may intera

The aim of this work was to characterize the antitumoral activity of the plant compound 7-epi-nemorosone in prostate carcinoma cell lines. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the second-leading cause of cancer death in men. In spite of the current therapeutic options for this cancer entity, many patients die due to metastases in distant organs and acquired chemotherapy resistance. Thus, approaches to provide improvements in outcome and quality of life for such patients are urgently needed. Recently, the polyisoprenylated benzophenone 7-epi-nemorosone, originally col

Five benzophenones and a xanthone, isolated from Hypericum annulatum Moris, were investigated for their protective effect against carbon tetrachloride toxicity in isolated rat hepatocytes. The benzophenones and the xanthone gentisein were administered alone (100 microM) and in combination with CCl4 (86 microM). CCl4 undergoes dehalogenation in the liver endoplasmic reticulum. This process leads to trichlormethyl radical (*CCl3) formation, initiation of lipid peroxidation, and measurable toxic effects on the hepatocytes. The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were assayed
