Effects of Experimental Anthropogenic Noise Exposure on the Reproductive Success of Secondary Cavity Nesting Birds.

Artificial nest boxes are critical nesting sites for secondary cavity-nesting birds; however, they are often placed near roadways and in urban areas that experience noise pollution and other human-caused stressors. Recent correlative studies document both negative and positive influences of noise pollution on reproductive success. Additionally, observational studies have not determined which stage of the breeding process is most vulnerable to noise pollution-settlement, incubation, and/or provisioning. Here, we controlled for possible effects from non-random settlement and eliminated potential

Illuminance and UV-A exposure during rearing affects egg production in broiler breeders transferred to open-sided adult housing.

1. Broiler breeders were reared in light-proof accommodation on 8-h photoperiods at an illuminance of 10 (W10), 40 (W40) or 100 lux (W100) from warm-white fluorescent lamps, or 10 lux (UV10) from Arcadia bird lamps (white light plus UV-A emission). At 20 weeks, 200 birds from each group were transferred to open-sided housing and a 16-h mixture of natural and warm-white fluorescent light. 2. Mortality during rearing and body weight at 20 weeks were similar for all groups. 3. The W10 birds matured 2 d later, had inferior rates of lay over peak production and laid 9 fewer eggs to 60 weeks than th

Salmonella Typhimurium DT193 and DT99 are present in great and blue tits in Flanders, Belgium.

Endemic infections with the common avian pathogen Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium) may incur a significant cost on the host population. In this study, we determined the potential of endemic Salmonella infections to reduce the reproductive success of blue (Cyanistes caeruleus) and great (Parus major) tits by correlating eggshell infection with reproductive parameters. The fifth egg of each clutch was collected from nest boxes in 19 deciduous forest fragments. Out of the 101 sampled eggs, 7 Salmonella Typhimurium isolates were recovered. The lo

Husbandry and propagation of the Chinese big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) at the Wildlife Conservation Society's Prospect Park Zoo.

Turtles worldwide are facing increasing pressures on their wild populations and many are listed as endangered or critically endangered. Chinese big-headed turtles (Platysternon megacephalum) are currently listed on IUCN's Red List as endangered and on Cites Appendix II. As part of the Wildlife Conservation Society's initiative on turtle and tortoise conservation, this species became a focus for propagation at Prospect Park Zoo (PPZ) in 2008. PPZ successfully bred and obtained eggs, with successful hatchings in 2013 and 2014. The staff fluctuated water and ambient temperatures along with photop

Geographic variation in cannibalism in Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) populations.

Cannibalism can have a large effect on population growth and survival in stressful environments, possibly including those created by insecticide use. In this study, we collected Colorado potato beetles from three isolated areas in the northeastern United States known for high levels of resistance to neonicotinoids. We measured resistance to imidacloprid in each of those populations, a laboratory susceptible population, and in hybrids between the three field populations and the laboratory susceptible population. We fed neonates eggs from resistant dams fed either imidacloprid-treated or untreat

Natural female mating rate maximizes hatchling size in a marine invertebrate.

1. Males and females often differ in their optimal mating rates, resulting potentially in conflicts over remating. In species with separate sexes, females typically have a lower optimal mating rate than males, and can regulate contacts with males accordingly. The realized mating rate may therefore be closer to the female's optimum. In simultaneous hermaphrodites, however, it has been suggested that the intraindividual optimization between 'male' and 'female' interests generates more 'male'-driven mating rates. 2. In order to assess the consequences of variation in mating rate on 'female' repro

Mating dynamics and multiple paternity in a long-lived vertebrate.

Multiple paternity is relatively common across diverse taxa; however, the drivers and implications related to paternal and maternal fitness are not well understood. Several hypotheses have been offered to explain the occurrence and frequency of multiple paternity. One set of hypotheses seeks to explain multiple paternity through direct and indirect benefits including increased genetic diversity or enhanced offspring fitness, whereas another set of hypotheses explains multiple paternity as a by-product of sexual conflict and population-specific parameters such as density. Here, we investigate m

Hatchlings of Tyrannosaurus rex and the Evolution of Dinosaur Reproductive Strategies.

Tyrannosaurs were giant predatory dinosaurs that occupied the apex of Late Cretaceous food chains. Little is known about the early life and reproductive ecology of tyrannosaurs due to the extreme rarity of hatchling and juvenile fossils. We report bones of hatchlings (<1 yr) for Tyrannosaurus rex and Gorgosaurus libratus, weighing ~2.5 kg and ~2.4 kg, respectively, i.e., <0.1% of adult mass. Clutches were likely large. We conservatively estimate ~20 eggs in a small adult T. rex versus ~30 eggs in the largest T. rex, and clutches of ~15 eggs in G. libratus; larger clutches of 50 or even 100 egg

No selection on immunological markers in response to a highly virulent pathogen in an Arctic breeding bird.

In natural populations, epidemics provide opportunities to look for intense natural selection on genes coding for life history and immune or other physiological traits. If the populations being considered are of management or conservation concern, then identifying the traits under selection (or 'markers') might provide insights into possible intervention strategies during epidemics. We assessed potential for selection on multiple immune and life history traits of Arctic breeding common eiders (Somateria mollissima) during annual avian cholera outbreaks (summers of 2006, 2007 & 2008). We measur

Estimation of Adult Census Size From Close-Kin Dyads in the Malaria Mosquito Anopheles gambiae.

Accurate estimates of adult mosquito abundance are central to the design and evaluation of vector control strategies, yet they are difficult to obtain from natural populations. Conventional mark-recapture methods for estimating adult mosquito census size pose logistical and other challenges. A recently developed close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) approach is a promising alternative. However, application of CKMR has been largely confined to long-lived vertebrates. Validation on empirical data from short-lived, highly fecund insects is lacking. Here, we apply CKMR to a natural population of Anophel

Embryogenesis and tadpole description of Hyperolius castaneus Ahl, 1931 and H. jackie Dehling, 2012 (Anura, Hyperoliidae) from montane bog pools.

Tadpoles of Hyperolius castaneus and Hyperolius jackie were found in the Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and adjacent areas. Tadpoles of both species were identified by DNA-barcoding. At the shore of a bog pool three clutches of Hyperolius castaneus of apparently different age, all laid on moss pads (Polytrichum commune, Isotachis aubertii) or grass tussocks (Andropogon shirensis) 2-5 cm above the water level, were found. One clutch of Hyperolius castaneus was infested by larval dipterid flies. The most recently laid clutch contained about 20 eggs within a broad egg-jelly envelope. The eggs we

The sperm of aging male bustards retards their offspring's development.

Understanding whether the sperm of older males has a diminished capacity to produce successful offspring is a key challenge in evolutionary biology. We investigate this issue using 10 years of reproductive data on captive long-lived houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata), where the use of artificial insemination techniques means parents can only influence offspring quality via their gametes. Here we show that paternal aging reduces both the likelihood that eggs hatch and the rate at which chicks grow, with older males producing the lightest offspring after the first month. Surprisingly, this

Genome-wide association study identifies candidate loci and a functional regulatory variant associated with egg-production traits in Wenchang chickens.

Egg-production traits are economically important in the poultry industry but genetically complex, and their molecular basis in indigenous chicken breeds remains poorly characterized. The Wenchang chicken, an indigenous meat-type breed from Hainan, China, retains abundant genetic variation but has been less extensively studied at the genomic level. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for six egg-production traits-average egg weight (AEW), age at first egg (AFE), total egg number to 43 and 56 weeks of age (TEN43W and TEN56W), average clutch size (ACS), and maximum

The risk of thiamine deficiency in common eider ducklings increases when females consume large prey.

Episodic mass mortality due to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is a major threat to marine top-consumers worldwide. Recent reports have shown that thiamine deficiency can lead to high mortality rates of common eider (Somateria mollissima) ducklings in the Baltic population. It is unclear whether the drastic reduction in offspring recruitment is linked to the changes in egg thiamine levels. This would have an additional negative impact on the Baltic population of the common eider, which is mainly driven by increased predation pressure. As thiamine concentration decreases with the size of organ

High Early Embryo Mortality and Low Hatching Success Observed in Aldabra Giant Tortoise Populations.

Turtles and tortoises are highly threatened yet understudied, particularly regarding reproductive traits and early life stages. In long-lived species, reliance on adult census data can mask reproductive failure for decades before population declines become apparent. This knowledge gap is evident in the Aldabra giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea), despite its widespread use in conservation translocations and ecosystem restoration. We present preliminary data on fertilisation success, early embryo survival and hatching success, across one natural and five translocated populations in the Sey

Fitness consequences of reciprocally asymmetric hybridization between simultaneous hermaphrodites.

Depending on fitness consequences, hybridization may rescue Inbred populations; generate premating barriers, reproductive Interference, or hybrid species; or extinguish a species. However, the fitness of hybrids is unpredictable without direct quantification of their performance in fitness components across multiple generations. The land snails Bradybaena pellucida and B. similaris, which are Indigenous and non-Indigenous in Japan, respectively, copulate with each other simultaneously and reciprocally. However, only B. pellucida produces hybrids, because it ends mating by removing the penis be

Commercial crocodile farming in Botswana.

A survey-based study was carried out to assess the state of crocodile farming in Botswana. A prepared, structured questionnaire was dispatched to crocodile farmers based on a directory provided by the Fisheries section of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and National Parks. The oldest farm was established in 1986. An average of three farms have been in operation since then, all of which obtained their stock from the Okavango and Thamalakane rivers in Botswana. The current stock averages 5,419 animals as follows: breeders 4%, hatchlings 56%,

Effects of the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus, on caged layers.

When 23-, 35-, and 49-week old Ideal 236 White Leghorn hens were infested with the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus, percentage egg production 12 weeks later had decreased by 16, 34, and 46%. Meanwhile, the average hen weight had decreased by about 85, 300, and 450 grams compared with unifested control hens of the same age. There were also significant decreases in clutch size and feed consumption of the infested hens. All the decreases correlated with populations of lice.

INVESTIGATIONS INTO FERTILITY AND HATCHING SUCCESS OF HUMBOLDT PENGUIN (SPHENISCUS HUMBOLDTI) EGGS AT LONDON ZOO.

Establishment of breeding programs in zoo-housed Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) colonies often takes several years and breeding success is generally perceived as poor. Husbandry and pathology records of eggs laid since the establishment of London Zoo's colony were retrospectively analyzed. Following a barren period from arrival of the first birds in May 2011, the first egg to hatch was laid in December 2013 and egg laying was consistent over the following 10 yr. A total of 823 eggs were laid by male-female pairs, so from 2018 onwards some newly-laid eggs were removed in order to limit

Can the limited marsupium space be a limiting factor for Syngnathus abaster females? Insights from a population with size-assortative mating.

1. Some syngnathid species show varying degrees of sex role reversal aside from male pregnancy, with females competing for access to mates and sometimes presenting conspicuous secondary sexual characters. Among other variables, brooding space constraints are usually considered a key element in female reproductive success, contributing strongly to the observed morphological and behavioural sexual differences. Nevertheless, a close relationship between sex role reversal and male brooding space limitation has not yet been accurately demonstrated in field studies. 2. The present work, conducted ov
