Morphometric Variants of the Coccyx in an Eastern Indian Cohort: Analysis from a Tertiary Care Center.

INTRODUCTION: The coccyx, forming the terminal portion of the human spine, has anatomical variations among countries, populations, and ethnicities. Given its complex structure involving multiple ligaments, muscles, and neural elements, the study of anatomical variations can provide valuable insight into the mechanisms underlying idiopathic coccydynia. Due to limited existing research on the morphometry of the Indian population, this study aims to examine the morphometry observed in the eastern Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of coccyx morphometry was conducte

Coccygeoplasty: preliminary experience with this new alternative treatment of refractory coccydynia in patients with coccyx hypermobility.

BACKGROUND: Coccydynia has many causes, including fracture, subluxation, and hypermobility of sacrococcygeal segments. Existing treatments are limited in their effectiveness. Coccygeoplasty (CP) is a relatively new, minimally invasive treatment that appears to address this difficult clinical challenge. OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical results at the time of the procedure and at 3- and 12-months' follow-up of patients with coccydynia related to subluxation and coccyx hypermobility treated with the CP technique. Additionally, to determine if there is any correlation between the final imaging and

Sacral erector spinae plane block for postoperative pain management following coccyx removal: A case report.

Sacrococcygeal dislocation commonly occurs after trauma and may cause coccydynia. Although most cases of coccydynia after sacrococcygeal dislocation resolve with conservative and medical treatment, surgery is also an option with refractory pain. Sacral erector spinae plane block (SESPB) is a novel approach for sacrococcygeal procedures and may be effective in the postoperative pain of this region. In this article, we present a case of a successful median approach SESPB for postoperative pain management following coccyx removal in a patient with sacrococcygeal dislocation. In conclusion, SESPB

[Operative treatment of fecal incontinence in coccyx agenesis in children after surgical correction of Hirschsprung's disease].

The coccygeal agenesis is one of causes of the external anal sphincter functional insufficiency after performing operations for Hirschsprung's disease in children. The frequency of its diagnosis had constituted 6.2%, in 14.6% it was the causative factor of fecal incontinence after the operation. In coccygeal agenesis the normal anatomy of the pelvic floor muscles become disordered. It is convenient to perform the anomaly correction during the radical operation conduction for the main disease.

Does primary tumor resection improve survival for patients with sarcomas of pelvic bones, sacrum, and coccyx who have metastasis at diagnosis ?

BACKGROUND: Recent studies demonstrated that primary tumor resection (PTR) improves survival of patients with metastatic bone sarcomas. However, it remains quite unclear regarding the role of PTR in the treatment of sarcomas of pelvic bones with synchronous metastasis at diagnosis. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program, we enrolled a total of 385 patients with sarcomas of pelvic bones, sacrum, and coccyx who have metastasis at initial diagnosis, including 139 patients with osteosarcoma, 176 with Ewing sarcoma, and 70 with chondrosarcoma. Association between PT

[Coccygodynia: etiology, pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, diagnosis and therapy].

The term 'coccygodynia' means the pain in the tailbone area (os coccygis; coccyx). Due to the sitting intolerance, coccygodynia can significantly disturb the quality of life. Coccygeal disorders that could be manifested in coccygodynia are injuries (fracture, subluxation, luxation), abnormal mobility (hypermobility, anterior and posterior subluxation or luxation of the coccyx), disc degeneration at sacrococcygeal (SC) and intercoccygeal (IC) segments, coccygeal spicule (bony excrescence), osteomyelitis and tumors. Abnormal mobility of coccyx, which can be seen on dynamic radiograph (lateral X-

Effect of the birthing position on its evolution from a biomechanical point of view.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: During vaginal delivery, several positions can be adopted by the mother to be more comfortable and to help the labor process. The positions chosen are very influenced by factors such as monitoring and intervention during the second stage of labor. However, there is limited evidence to support the most ideal birthing position. This work aims at contributing to a better knowledge associated with the widening of the pubic symphysis and the biomechanics of flexible and non-flexible sacrum positions that can be adopted during the second stage of labor, as well as their res

A dynamic alphanumeric classification system for non-traumatic coccydynia: Further defining clinical and research paradigms.

BACKGROUND: There is a rise in sedentary lifestyle with nearly 1.8 billion adults not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity. This is associated with lengthy sitting hours which is a risk factor that can cause non-traumatic coccydynia. Non-traumatic coccydynia is one of the least understood and challenging diseases. The current classification system is insufficient in finding the cause or forming an effective rehabilitation plan. The study aims to observe coccygeal morphology in the Indian population, compare dynamic sacrococcygeal radiological indices in patients with and without

[Coccygodynia: value of dynamic lateral x-ray films in sitting position].

In coccygodynia, pain is most severe in the sitting position. This prompted a study comparing lateral roentgenograms of the coccyx taken with the patient lying on the side. In this prospective study, eight of 30 patients had posterior subdislocation of the coccyx which caused pain and was visible only on the films taken in the sitting position.

3D pelvimetry and biometric measurements: a surgical perspective for colorectal resections.

PURPOSE: Male sex, high BMI, narrow pelvis, and bulky mesorectum were acknowledged as clinical variables correlated with a difficult pelvic dissection in colorectal surgery. This paper aimed at comparing pelvic biometric measurements in female and male patients and at providing a perspective on how pelvimetry segmentation may help in visualizing mesorectal distribution. METHODS: A 3D software was used for segmentation of DICOM data of consecutive patients aged 60 years, who underwent elective abdominal CT scan. The following measurements were estimated: pelvic inlet, outlet, and depth; pubic

Evaluation of anatomical landmarks for transanal total mesorectal excision based on MRI.

BACKGROUND: Transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME) is a novel sphincter-preserving procedure for low rectal cancer. This "bottom to up" approach is unfamiliar to colorectal surgeons and the crucial anatomical landmarks also remain unclear. METHODS: Two hundred and five cases of pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from 2015 to 2016 were reviewed. Curvature of posterior mesorectal fascia, distal mesorectal angle, length of posterior mesorectal fascia, main structures around the mesorectum were measured and analyzed. The landmarks identified on MRI were verified in taTME procedures of f

The anococcygeal ligaments: Cadaveric study with application to our understanding of incontinence in the elderly.

The term "anococcygeal ligament (ACL)" has been used to refer to two distinct structures: a superficial fibrous band originating from the myosepta of the external anal sphincter (EAS) and running upwards to the coccyx (the superficial ACL); and a deep fibrous band originating from the periosteum of the coccyx, merging with the thick presacral fascia and attaching to the superior end of the EAS (the deep ACL). In the present work, elastic fiber histology and muscle immunohistochemistry of sagittal sections obtained from 15 donated elderly male cadavers showed that superficial ACL, corresponding
