The six receptors of the inner ear (cochlea, two otolith organs and three semicircular canals) share a common transduction unit made up of a sensory hair cell, a first order sensory neuron and the synapse between them. Displacement of the stereocilia in a particular direction leads to excitation of the hair cell and activation of the neuron. Electrical and mechanical reflections of these stages of transduction can be recorded non-invasively in humans and in animals. These include cochlear microphonic potentials, otoacoustic emissions, auditory and vestibular evoked potentials. The ability to r

OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of long-term mild hypoxia and of glutamate poisoning on the functional properties of the cochlea.
METHODS: Outer hair cell activity was monitored using otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonics, and inner hair cell/cochlear afferent function was measured using neural responses (cochlear action potentials or auditory brainstem responses [ABRs]).
RESULTS: In contrast to the effects of acute anoxia, in which all aspects of cochlear function are simultaneously lost, mild, long-term hypoxia results in a clear differential effect on outer versus inner hair

The perilymphatic spaces of guinea pig cochleae were perfused with artificial perilymph, with and without drug, at a rate of 2.5 microliters/minute for 10 minutes. The compound action potential of the auditory nerve, cochlear microphonics, and the summating potential evoked by 10 kHz tone bursts of varying intensities were recorded from a wire inserted in the basal turn scala vestibuli. The endocochlear potential was recorded from the scala media. Sodium salicylate (1.25 to 10 mmol/L) reduced the magnitude of the compound action potential evoked by low-sound intensities without affecting the c

BACKGROUND: Despite cochlear microphonic's potential clinical application, especially in ANSD diagnosis, the optimal parameters to record cochlear microphonics and the effect of various stimulus parameters are not well understood yet, which makes its recording a difficult procedure. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of stimulus polarity, rate, stimulus type, and stimulus frequency on different aspects of cochlear microphonics, which could help to decide an optimal stimulus parameter that can be used to record CM.
METHODS: The study involved 32 normal-hearing adults. CM

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the physiological properties of summating potential (SP) and to compare the different changes between SP and endocochlear potential (EP) induced by Furosemide in guinea pigs.
METHODS: SP in response to clicks with alternative polarities at 105 dB peSPL was recorded from a electrode in the facial nerve canal. EP was measured with a glass microelectrode in the basal turn of the cochlea. SP and EP were observed simultaneously and continuously after injection of Furosemide or the solution of Furosemide-bovine serum albumin injected into the jugular vein of the animal.

Auditory stimulation elicits a complex series of electric signals in the ear and nervous system which can be used for hearing assessment, audiologic and neurologic diagnosis, intraoperative monitoring, and neurophysiologic research. The earliest components comprise the electrocochleogram. The cochlear microphonic arises from receptor potentials from cochlear hair cells, and is used to assess hair cell function in patients with auditory neuropathy. The summating potential becomes larger in Ménière's disease. The eighth-nerve compound action potential is useful for objective audiometry. Brainste

A method is described to record cochlear evoked potentials in humans (ECochG) with a low impedance electrode on the external ear near the opening of the external auditory canal. A piezoelectric click stimulus was delivered to the ear through a polyethylene tube creating diminution of stimulus artifact and a signal delay. Wave forms resembling the cochlear microphonic (CM), summating potential (SP) and the eighth nerve action potential (N1) were differentially accentuated by changes in stimulation and recording parameters. The addition or subtraction of condensation and rarefaction click wave f

Cochlear microphonics (CM), action potentials (AP), and endocochlear potential (EP) were recorded from anesthetized, immobilized guinea pigs during potential (EP) were recorded from anesthetized, immobilized guinea pigs during and following 20 min periods of noise exposure. Changes in cochlear potentials were compared in guinea pigs exposed to continuous broadband noise or mechanically generated impact noise of equal energy content. Over a range of continuous noise levels from 95 to 105 dB SPL it was found that continuous noise produced less suppression of CM and a greater suppression of AP th

Multiple sclerosis is known to affect the myelin of the auditory pathway resulting in acute hearing loss. Two cases of sudden deafness due to multiple sclerosis have been evaluated by conventional audiometry, brainstem auditory evoked response audiometry and transtympanic electrocochleography. The abnormalities of the compound action potential in both patients (enhanced latency, abnormal adaptation using fast stimulus rate) and the normal receptor potentials (cochlear microphonic, summating potential), as well as the absence of brainstem responses suggest a disturbance of synchronization at th

The electrocochleogram and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are electrophysiologic signals used to assess the auditory nerve. The electrocohleogram includes the cochlear microphonic, the cochlear summating potential, and the eighth nerve compound action potential. It is used predominantly for hearing assessment and for diagnosis of Ménière disease and auditory neuropathy. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials are used for hearing assessment, diagnosis of dysfunction within the cochlea, the auditory nerve, and the brainstem auditory pathways up to the level of the mesencephalon, and

The effects of noise exposure were studied in fifty-nine 4- to 5-week-old albino Hartley guinea pigs with normal hearing (body weight 250-300 g). The following experiments and results were carried out: exposure to 350 Hz pure tones at 115 dB for 40 h and exposure to 350 Hz tones at 120 dB for 64 h. In order to investigate the effects of low-frequency tone exposures on the hearing of the guinea pigs, cochlear microphonics (CM), whole nerve action potentials (AP) and endocochlear potentials (EP) were measured. With a high-sound pressure, a decrease was observed in the CM maximum output voltage i

Single doses of gentamicin and furosemide given in combination result in a rapid and profound loss of cochlear function. In this study, measurement of three gross cochlear potentials (cochlear microphonics, compound action potentials and the endocochlear potential) were carried out in order to determine the ototoxic sites of action of the drugs given in combination. The rapidity and severity of the cochlear deficit is dose dependent and with the doses employed in this study (80 mg/kg gentamicin i.v. 80 mg/kg furosemide i.v.), complete loss of cochlear function is seen after about 72 hours. HYPOTHESIS: Cochlear trauma due to electrode insertion can be detected in acoustic responses to low frequencies in an animal model with a hearing condition similar to patients using electroacoustic stimulation.
BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence suggests that intracochlear damage during cochlear implantation negatively affects residual hearing. Recently, we demonstrated the usefulness of acoustically evoked potentials to detect cochlear trauma in normal-hearing gerbils. Here, gerbils with noise-induced hearing loss were used to investigate the effects of remote trauma on residual hearing.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital profound hearing loss with preserved cochlear outer hair cell activity (otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonic) is the most common phenotype associated with mutations in the OTOF gene. The aim of this study was to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the auditory dysfunction in five patients (2 adults and 3 children) carrying biallelic mutations in OTOF, who showed an uncommon phenotype of mild hearing impairment associated with severe difficulties in speech perception and delay of language development.
DESIGN: Patients underwent audiometric asse

We investigated the effect of administering hypertonic glycerol on cochlear and auditory nerve responses to rectangular-pulse clicks and on pure-tone behavioral thresholds. Eleven ears with Ménière's disease, and 20 ears without the disease were studied. Among the ears with Ménière's disease summating potential (SP) amplitudes decreased and 250 to 1,000-Hz thresholds improved after glycerol administration. Action potential amplitudes from the ears with Ménière's disease also decreased after glycerol ingestion, but to a lesser degree. In contrast, among the ears without Ménieère's disease, 250-

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen on cochlear microphonics, action potential of the auditory nerve, and brain stem response damaged by short exposure to noise is varied. Of 26 guinea pigs 14 showed a positive influence as measured by amplitudes. In 12 animals oxygen had little or no effect. The reason for this could lie in the individual reaction to the anesthetic of the section of the auditory nerve tested. The reaction of postmortem cochlear microphonics after hyperbaric oxygen treatment indicates oxygen diffusion through the round window.

PURPOSE: One of the major reasons that totally implantable cochlear microphones are not readily available is the lack of good implantable microphones. An implantable microphone has the potential to provide a range of benefits over external microphones for cochlear implant users including the filtering ability of the outer ear, cosmetics, and usability in all situations. This paper presents results from experiments in human cadaveric ears of a piezofilm microphone concept under development as a possible component of a future implantable microphone system for use with cochlear implants. This mic

Pre-operative information about cochlear mechanical function is a pre-requisite for intra-cochlear implants. In more than 300 pre-operative examinations we demonstrated cochlear microphonics in many patients suffering from complete inner ear deafness; we interpret this phenomenon as evidence of mechanical function of the cochlea. A summation potential in patients with sensorineural deafness is more certain proof. We have now performed thorough electrocochleography on 43 deaf patients whose acoustic nerve was intact, i.e. whose promontory test was positive. After stimulation firstly with rarefa

The authors consider the problems of the early diagnosis of paediatric hypoacusis, presenting a study done on twenty audiological high risk children that were subjected to audiometric screening by delayed cochlear otoacoustic emissions (EOE) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BEAPs). Eighteen of twenty children that were examined were normal, while two had bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. EOE were evoked in all patients that presented normal BAEP thresholds, while they were absent in deaf subjects. Evoked otoacoustic emissions research allows us to identify two groups of subjects:
