Bias at the racetrack: effects of individual expertise and task importance on predecision reevaluation of alternatives.

These studies were designed to test cognitive dissonance theory's assertion that alternatives are not reevaluated before a choice. Participants viewed information about horses in a simulated race and rated each one's chance of winning three times before placing their bet and once after placing it. It was found that ratings of the chosen horse increased within the predecision period as well as after betting. Predecision bolstering occurred even when participants did not expect to bet, and predecision preference increased with task importance and participant expertise. The findings are attribute

A Cognitive Study of Dietary Imbalance Behaviors in Chinese Multigenerational Households Based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model.

Background/Objectives: Family dietary imbalance is an important source of the double burden of malnutrition, and dietary arrangements in multigenerational households are often deeply embedded in intergenerational caregiving relationships. However, the cognitive formation mechanism through which dietary caregiving behaviors driven by care and responsibility may instead lead to dietary imbalance still lacks systematic explanation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the cognitive formation mechanism of dietary imbalance behaviors in Chinese multigenerational households. Methods: This study ta

Money for consent--psychological consideration.

CONTEXT: Regarding the increasing gap between demand and supply of donor organs the question is increasingly discussed, if families of organ donors should receive a financial incentive for consenting to organ donation. However, little attention has been paid to the psychological consequences of such incentives. OBJECTIVE: We discuss the question of financial incentives for families of presumed organ donors in the light of relevant psychological theories. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Overview of the psychological literature. Only well established theories were included. CONCLUSIONS: We

Neuroimaging gender dysphoria: a novel psychobiological model.

Gender identity development is complex and involves several key processes. Transgender people experience incongruence between their biological and identified gender. This incongruence can cause significant impairment in overall functioning and lead to gender dysphoria (GD). The pathophysiology of GD is complex and is poorly understood. A PubMed search based on predetermined eligibility criteria was conducted to review neuropsychiatric articles focused on neurological, biological and neuroimaging aspects of gender development, transgender identity and GD. The information obtained from the liter

Neural mechanisms underlying valence inferences to sound: The role of the right angular gyrus.

We frequently infer others' intentions based on non-verbal auditory cues. Although the brain underpinnings of social cognition have been extensively studied, no empirical work has yet examined the impact of musical structure manipulation on the neural processing of emotional valence during mental state inferences. We used a novel sound-based theory-of-mind paradigm in which participants categorized stimuli of different sensory dissonance level in terms of positive/negative valence. Whilst consistent with previous studies which propose facilitated encoding of consonances, our results demonstrat

Arousal as a necessary condition for attitude change following induced compliance.

This study examined whether arousal is or is not a necessary condition for attitude change in the induced compliance paradigm. In a 2 times 3 design, experimental subjects were induced to write counterattitudinal essays under either high- or low-choice conditions. All subjects were led to believe that a pill, which they had just taken in the context of a separate experiment, was a placebo. In reality, subjects were given a pill that contained either phenobarbital (tranquilizer condition), amphetamine (amphetamine condition), or milk powder (placebo condition). In this last condition, the resul

Accommodation of Symptoms in Anorexia Nervosa: A Qualitative Study.

UNLABELLED: Anorexia nervosa (AN) continues to remain poorly understood within eating disorders. Recent research and theory have moved away from understanding its aetiological causes, addressing instead potential maintaining factors. This study is focused on interpersonal maintenance factors: the response of close others. Relatives of those with AN typically carry the main burden of care, and research has found high levels of carer distress and unmet needs. Recent theories have proposed this emotional impact to contribute to expressed emotion and other unhelpful caregiver interactions which in

Experiential over-softening: a boundary condition of servicescape in high-reliability contexts.

PURPOSE: This study examines how highly "hotelized" hospital servicescapes may unintentionally weaken procedural compliance and patient safety by reshaping patients' role perceptions from "patient" to "guest." More specifically, it explores whether the over-optimization of comfort, hospitality and experiential design can generate behavioral dissonance and activate hospitality-consistent scripts that conflict with institutional healthcare norms. The paper introduces "experiential over-softening" as a provisional boundary condition of servicescape theory, suggesting that experiential enhancement

Efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Internet-based selective eating disorder prevention: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial within the ProHEAD Consortium.

BACKGROUND: The development of efficacious, cost-effective, and widely accessible programs for the prevention of eating disorders (EDs) is crucial in order to reduce the ED-related burden of illness. Programs using dissonance-based and cognitive behavioral approaches are most effective for the selective prevention of ED. Internet-based delivery is assumed to maximize the reach and impact of preventive efforts. However, the current evidence for Internet-based ED prevention is limited. The present trial evaluates the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of two new interventions (based on dissonance t

Cost-Effectiveness Comparison of Delivery Modalities for a Dissonance-Based Eating Disorder Prevention Program over 4-Year Follow-Up.

The cost-effectiveness of delivery methods for an eating disorder prevention program is reported. In an effectiveness trial (enrollment 2013-2015) comparing three formats (clinician-led, peer-led, and Internet-delivered) for delivering the Body Project eating disorder prevention program to college women versus an educational video control, the peer-led method was more effective than the three alternatives at preventing onset of eating disorders over 4-year follow-up. Eating disorder incidence was 19.3% for clinician-led groups, 8.1% for peer-led groups, 15.5% for Internet-based eBody Project p

Negative affect and drinking drivers: a review and conceptual model linking dissonance, efficacy and negative affect to risk and motivation for change.

This review summarizes evidence on negative affect among drinking drivers. Elevations in negative affect, including depressed mood, anxiety and hostility, have long been noted in convicted drinking drivers, and recent evidence suggests an association between negative affect and driving after drinking in the general population. Previous efforts to understand the significance of this negative affective state have ranged from suggestions that it may play a causal role in drinking driving to suggestions that it may interfere with response to treatment and remedial interventions. Recent studies hav

Measuring destination image dissonance: A compositional data analysis of cross-media representations in Sanya's Tourism.

This study examines Sanya's tourism image disparities across cognitive, spatial, and affective dimensions in Press Generated Content (PGC), Tourist Generated Content (TGC), and Official Generated Content (OGC) (2013-2022), comparing pre-pandemic (2013-2019) and COVID-19 (2020-2022) periods. Results show: cognitive consistency in "tourism/hotels" but TGC focusing on "coastal + food" vs. PGC/OGC emphasizing policy elements; spatial misalignment between policy-driven spaces and tourists' preferred spaces, revealing a systematic dissonance between institutional promotion and on-the-ground practice

Behavioral Responses to Losses Disguised as Wins: A Field Study of Slot Machine Players.

We present the results of a field study examining the effect of losses disguised as wins (LDWs) on subsequent slot machine gambler betting behavior. An LDW occurs when the amount won is less than the amount bet. Using non-experimental, individual transaction gambling data, we examine post LDW betting behavior in a panel of 42,669 gamblers and 17 million slot machine plays. The primary empirical findings include: (1) streaks of three LDWs greater than 75% of the original amount bet lead slot gamblers to increase the amount bet on the next spin; (2) streaks of three LDWs less than 25% of the ori

The dilemma of sweet temptation: How sugar perception confusion in sweetened beverages shapes consumer avoidance behavior.

Despite widespread consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, consumers face contradictory information from health authorities, marketing, and social media, yet limited research examines how this information conflict affects purchasing decisions. This study investigates how sugar perception confusion influences purchasing avoidance through ambivalent attitudes. Based on cognitive dissonance and information processing theories, we developed a cognitive-affective-behavioral model examining relationships among sugar perception confusion, ambivalent attitudes, and purchasing avoidance behaviors. The dissonance of "expectation-reality": a narrative study on preoperative identity expectations and postoperative identity reconstruction of patients after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: More than 1 billion people globally live with obesity. Individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) face identity reconstruction challenges linked to poor dietary adherence and psychological distress. Few studies analyze the mechanism of dissonance between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality, leaving a psychosocial support gap for long-term recovery. OBJECTIVES: To explore the dynamic collision between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality and identify key turning points in identity reconstruction among patien

Preoccupation as psychopathological process and symptom in adjustment disorder: A scoping review.

In the ICD-11 diagnostic guidelines, preoccupation has been introduced as the new core symptom of adjustment disorder. Despite this essential innovation, preoccupation has so far largely been defined as rumination and worry and does not feature a distinct character as an independent symptom. In order to investigate the nature of preoccupation, various cognitive approaches are evaluated and linked to preoccupation. Furthermore, the aim of this review is to define preoccupation more precisely and to distinguish it from other symptoms in psychopathology. The evaluation of key features of cognitiv

The use of hope as a coping mechanism in abused women.

The purpose of this study was to identify how abused women use hope and to determine whether hope is a coping mechanism in their relationship with the abusers. Four focus group sessions were conducted with a sample of 24 women using a phenomenological methodology. The data analysis indicated that abused women maintain hope in four major dimensions: hope for change in their partner's behavior, hope for survival, hope as something to cling to, and hope for control of the situation. The subjects stated that hope was used as a coping mechanism to help them keep their sanity; but in this context, t

A Qualitative Exploration of Parents' Perceptions of Risk in Youth Contact Rugby.

The purpose of this study was to explore the understandings and perceptions of risk related to brain trauma amongst parents of children that play contact rugby. A qualitative approach was taken, using semi-structured interviews with 7 mothers and 27 fathers of children that participate in contact rugby. A thematic analysis of data suggests that parents used two primary cognitive strategies to process the risk they consented to with their children's participation in rugby; (1) minimalizing rugby risk to be equivalent to less injurious sports; and (2) elevating physical and social advantages abo
