Cognitive dysfunction in pediatric multiple sclerosis.

Cognitive and neuropsychological impairments are well documented in adult multiple sclerosis (MS). Research has only recently focused on cognitive disabilities in pediatric cases, highlighting some differences between pediatric and adult cases. Impairments in several functions have been reported in children, particularly in relation to attention, processing speed, visual-motor skills, and language. Language seems to be particularly vulnerable in pediatric MS, unlike in adults in whom it is usually preserved. Deficits in executive functions, which are considered MS-specific in adults, have been

COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION IN FMR1 PREMUTATION CARRIERS.

Premutation carriers of the fragile X mental retardation gene (especially men) older than 50 may develop a neurodegenerative disease, the fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). Carriers may present with varied cognitive impairments. Attention, working memory, declarative and procedural learning, information processing speed, and recall are among the cognitive domains affected. Executive dysfunction is a prominent deficit, which has been demonstrated mostly in men with FXTAS. In more advanced stages of FXTAS, both men and women may develop a mixed cortical-subcortical dementia, ma

[Transitory cognitive dysfunction in rolandic epilepsy].

Forty-four patients with rolandic epilepsy (32 boys, 12 girls), aged from 5 to 14 years, were examined in the prospective study during 5 years. Before the antiepileptic treatment, most of patients had transitory cognitive disturbances. There were the impairment of verbal functions, especially verbal intellect, while non-verbal intellect remained intact; dyspraxia, impairment of auditory-speech memory, disturbances of arbitrary regulation and optical-motor coordination. The cognitive impairment was not severe and did not impact on learning of school program. No significant correlations were fou

The Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome Working Group guidelines for diagnosis and monitoring of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS) is diagnosed with increasing frequency, yet standardized diagnostic guidelines are lacking. The CCDS Working Group, an international group combining experts in the field and primary care veterinarians, proposes a definition of the syndrome and practical diagnostic criteria designed to aid clinicians and researchers alike. Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome is defined as a chronic, progressive, age-associated neurodegenerative syndrome, characterized by cognitive and behavioral changes that affect daily life to varying degrees. These changes affec

[Overview and assessment of cognitive function in interpreting postoperative cognitive dysfunction].

The most important point for evaluation of the post-operative cognitive dysfunction is that we understand "cognitive function". First we described the definition of the "cognitive function" and second, outlined each function (dysfunction) and introduced the main assessment methods from the view point of neuropsychology. Cognitive function (dysfunction) described in this paper includes consciousness (confusional state, disturbance of consciousness), generalized attention (disorder of generalized attention), memory (amnesia), orientation (disorientation), executive function (dysexecutive syndrom

The association of gustatory dysfunction, olfactory dysfunction, and cognition in older adults.

BACKGROUND: The association of gustatory dysfunction (GD) with quality of life (QOL) and cognition in older adults is understudied. Our objective was to study the prevalence of GD in the community and explore impacts and associated factors. METHODS: A prospective, multi-institutional, pre-corona virus disease (COVID) cohort of adults aged 50 years and older had smell and taste testing using "Sniffin' Sticks" (TDI) and "Taste Strips." The impact of GD on mood, QOL, and social interaction was assessed through visual analog scales. Subjects completed the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders, Pat

Is subclinical thyroid dysfunction in the elderly associated with depression or cognitive dysfunction?

BACKGROUND: Widespread use of automated sensitive assays for thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) has increased identification of mild thyroid dysfunction, especially in elderly patients. The clinical significance of this dysfunction, however, remains uncertain, and associations with cognitive impairment, depression, and anxiety are unconfirmed. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between mild thyroid dysfunction and cognition, depression, and anxiety in elderly persons. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. Associations were explored through mixed-model analyses. SETTING: Pr

Brain mineral concentrations in canine cognitive dysfunction.

Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is a prevalent age-related neurodegenerative condition in dogs that shares several features with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although mineral dyshomeostasis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of AD, its role in CCD remains largely unexplored. This retrospective study aimed to investigate regional brain mineral concentrations in 24 dogs with CCD and 15 dogs exhibiting successful cognitive aging (non-CCD). CCD diagnosis was based on the results of caregiver questionnaires, physical examination and laboratory analyses after ruling out any other intracranial d

Remazolam on postoperative cognitive dysfunction: A perspective.

This review thoroughly examines the complex interplay between remazolam administration and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), offering a detailed analysis of POCD's pathogenesis and the pharmacological mechanisms underpinning remazolam's effects. It critically synthesizes existing research findings, highlighting the nuanced nature of the association between remazolam use and POCD. While recognizing the widespread use of remazolam as a sedative, this review identifies its potential to increase susceptibility to POCD, particularly in vulnerable groups such as elderly patients or those e

[Cognitive Dysfunction Due to Traumatic Brain Injury].

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated dementia refers to cognitive dysfunction resulting from brain injury caused by head trauma. With advances in medical care, the survival rate of TBI patients has increased. Additionally, the growing elderly population has led to a rise in cases of cognitive dysfunction following TBI. As a result, the assessment and management of such conditions have become urgent issues. Accurate diagnosis of TBI-related cognitive impairment requires objective evaluation, primarily through radiological neuroimaging. This paper provides an overview of cognitive dysfunction

Migraine and cognitive dysfunction: a narrative review.

The association between migraine and cognitive function has been studied during the last decade, however, this relationship is not well established. As migraine prevalence is highest between the ages of 30-40, aligning with some of our most productive years, we must understand cognitive changes within this disorder. Cognitive impairment potentially limits social and professional interactions, thus negatively impacting quality of life. Therefore, we will review the relationship between prevalent migraine and cognition. Cognitive dysfunction has been reported to be the second largest cause of di

Targeting Insulin Resistance to Treat Cognitive Dysfunction.

Dementia is a devastating disease associated with aging. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, followed by vascular dementia. In addition to clinically diagnosed dementia, cognitive dysfunction has been reported in diabetic patients. Recent studies are now beginning to recognize type 2 diabetes mellitus, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders. While studies on insulin action have remained traditionally in the domain of peripheral tissues, the detrimental effects of insulin resistan

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction, Alzheimer's disease, and anesthesia.

Although aging itself is not a disease, there are many comorbidities that become more common with aging. Heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses are either more common or more severe in aging patients. Approximately 5.5 million people in the United States have Alzheimer's disease (AD), with the principal risk factor being age. It is estimated that the incidence of AD diagnosis doubles every 5 years after the age of 65. Therefore, as the population ages, the impact of AD on the healthcare landscape will increase. Understanding how to manage patients with AD is critical as we begin to

Cognitive dysfunction and age-related macular degeneration.

Several previous studies showed that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) share common risk factors and histopathology changes, and there is epidemiological evidence linking AMD to cognitive impairment. We tested this theory in 51 patients with late-stage AMD and 24 controls by analyzing their neuropsychological profiles. In this study, data showed that patients affected by late-stage AMD have a worse global cognitive function than those of the controls and, in particular, show worse performances in memory tasks. Moreover, patients affected by the dry form of AMD

Cognitive dysfunction in drug induced parkinsonism (DIP).

Several studies have suggested that the presence of dementia increases the risk of developing DIP. However, these prior studies exclusively focused on the underlying conditions before the development of DIP and there are no studies about the characteristics and prognosis of the cognitive status associated with DIP. We investigate the cognitive impairments associated with DIP by comparing neuro-psychological test results in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal controls and the longitudinal outcome of cognition in DIP. The cohort in this study included 13 consecutive patients with D
