An In-depth Exploration of the Interplay between fMRI Methods and Theory in Cognitive Neuroscience.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been a cornerstone of cognitive neuroscience since its invention in the 1990s. The methods that we use for fMRI data analysis allow us to test different theories of the brain, thus different analyses can lead us to different conclusions about how the brain produces cognition. There has been a centuries-long debate about the nature of neural processing, with some theories arguing for functional specialization or localization (e.g., face and scene processing) while other theories suggest that cognition is implemented in distributed representations

Unrealistic representations of "the self": A cognitive neuroscience assessment of anosognosia for memory deficit.

Three cognitive components may play a crucial role in both memory awareness and in anosognosia for memory deficit (AMD): (1) a personal data base (PDB), i.e., a memory store that contains "semantic" representations about the self, (2) monitoring processes (MPs) and (3) an explicit evaluation system (EES), or comparator, that assesses and binds the representations stored in the PDB with information obtained from the environment. We compared both the behavior and the functional connectivity (as assessed by resting-state fMRI) of AMD patients with aware patients and healthy controls. We found tha

Prospect theory on the brain? Toward a cognitive neuroscience of decision under risk.

Most decisions must be made without advance knowledge of their consequences. Economists and psychologists have devoted much attention to modeling decisions made under conditions of risk in which options can be characterized by a known probability distribution over possible outcomes. The descriptive shortcomings of classical economic models motivated the development of prospect theory (D. Kahneman, A. Tversky, Prospect theory: An analysis of decision under risk. Econometrica, 4 (1979) 263-291; A. Tversky, D. Kahneman, Advances in prospect theory: Cumulative representation of uncertainty. Journa

From Trust in Automation to Decision Neuroscience: Applying Cognitive Neuroscience Methods to Understand and Improve Interaction Decisions Involved in Human Automation Interaction.

Human automation interaction (HAI) systems have thus far failed to live up to expectations mainly because human users do not always interact with the automation appropriately. Trust in automation (TiA) has been considered a central influence on the way a human user interacts with an automation; if TiA is too high there will be overuse, if TiA is too low there will be disuse. However, even though extensive research into TiA has identified specific HAI behaviors, or trust outcomes, a unique mapping between trust states and trust outcomes has yet to be clearly identified. Interaction behaviors ha

Mood, cognition and in vivo protein imaging: the emerging nexus in clinical neuroscience.

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of mood and cognition overlap in the elderly and there is an emerging consensus that both groups of disorders share neurobiological substrates. METHODS: Salient peer reviewed articles focusing on late-life depression, structural neuroimaging and recent developments in positron emission tomography based in vivo protein imaging. RESULTS: Epidemiological and clinical evidence indicates that mood and cognition in the elderly are clinically inter-related and common neurobiological mechanisms may underlie both groups of disorders. Individualized cognitive neuroscience needs 7T: Comparing numerosity maps at 3T and 7T MRI.

The field of cognitive neuroscience is weighing evidence about whether to move from the current standard field strength of 3 Tesla (3T) to ultra-high field (UHF) of 7T and above. The present study contributes to the evidence by comparing a computational cognitive neuroscience paradigm at 3T and 7T. The goal was to evaluate the practical effects, i.e. model predictive power, of field strength on a numerosity task using accessible pre-processing and analysis tools. Previously, using 7T functional magnetic resonance imaging and biologically-inspired analyses, i.e. population receptive field model

The Neuroscience of Storing and Molding Tool Action Concepts: How "Plastic" is Grounded Cognition?

Choosing how to use tools to accomplish a task is a natural and seemingly trivial aspect of our lives, yet engages complex neural mechanisms. Recently, work in healthy populations has led to the idea that tool knowledge is grounded to allow for appropriate recall based on some level of personal history. This grounding has presumed neural loci for tool use, centered on parieto-temporo-frontal areas to fuse perception and action representations into one dynamic system. A challenge for this idea is related to one of its great benefits. For such a system to exist, it must be very plastic, to allow

Food-Derived Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cognitive Aging: Integrating Nutritional Neuroscience and Geroscience.

Within the emerging field of nutritional neuroscience, omega-3 fatty acids are among the most extensively investigated dietary bioactive compounds with potential relevance to cognitive aging. As populations continue to age worldwide, identifying modifiable nutritional factors that support cognitive health has become an important public health priority. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), obtained primarily from marine sources, are integral components of neuronal membranes and serve as precursors of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators. On the relation between theory of mind and executive functioning: A developmental cognitive neuroscience perspective.

Theory of mind (ToM) and executive functioning (EF) show marked interrelatedness across childhood, and developmental psychologists have long been interested in understanding the nature of this association. The present review addresses this issue from a cognitive neuroscience perspective by exploring three hypotheses regarding their functional overlap: (1) ToM relies on EF (EF→ToM); (2) EF relies on ToM (ToM→EF); and (3) ToM and EF are mutually related, owing to shared neural structures or networks (ToM↔EF). Drawing on evidence from normative brain development, neurodevelopmental and neurodegen

An integrative theory of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder based on the cognitive and affective neurosciences.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral syndrome that arises in early childhood, often co-occurs with conduct disorder and leads, developmentally, to antisocial behavior and substance abuse. Models from cognitive and affective neuroscience have been invoked in an effort to understand the development of ADHD, leading to a broad array of interrelated theories and hypothesized mechanisms. In this paper, we highlight core mechanisms that may cut across several theories and constructs, and thus provide some leverage for further study and conceptualization from a neuroscience

Beyond the dichotomy between controlled and naturalistic paradigms: modeling psychological constructs in cognitive neuroscience.

Cognitive neuroscience aims to link psychological constructs to brain activity, but this goal depends critically on how such constructs are operationalized. Conventional controlled paradigms define constructs through task contrasts or parametric manipulations, providing interpretability by restricting the range of stimuli, behavioral responses, and task demands. Naturalistic paradigms instead use complex, temporally extended stimuli such as movies, narratives, and music, enabling brain activity to be modeled in relation to continuous, multidimensional features of real-world inputs. With the ri

Neural-linguistic analysis for Alzheimer's detection: A deep learning approach informed by cognitive neuroscience.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts cognitive function across multiple domains, particularly affecting language networks and speech production pathways in the brain. Patients demonstrate symptoms including aphasia, reduced syntactic complexity, and diminished verbal fluency that reflects underlying neural pathology in language-related cortical areas. Current detection methods rely on resource-intensive neuroimaging, invasive biomarker sampling, and extensive neuropsychological testing, creating substantial barriers to early diagnosis. While resear

Mild traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder in returning veterans: perspectives from cognitive neuroscience.

A significant proportion of military personnel deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) has been exposed to war-zone events potentially associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There has been significant controversy regarding healthcare policy for those service members and military veterans who returned from OEF/OIF deployments with both mild TBI and PTSD. There is currently little empirical evidence available to address these controversies. This review uses a cognitive neuroscience framework to addr

Does dyslexia develop from learning the alphabet in the wrong hemisphere? A cognitive neuroscience analysis.

A new perspective is described which views developmental dyslexia as the outcome of learning to write the alphabet in the nondominant (right) hemisphere. The letter-level and whole-word subtypes of dyslexia are seen as differing responses adopted to cope with this predicament. Striking similarities between dyslexics and callosotomy patients in the allocation of covert attention to lateralized stimuli provide direction for integrating a diversity of dyslexic research within this framework. This synthesis, together with information from pure alexia, brain activation, and reading research, lends

A Cognitive Neuroscience View of Schizophrenic Symptoms: Abnormal Activation of a System for Social Perception and Communication.

We will review converging evidence that language related symptoms of the schizophrenic syndrome such as auditory verbal hallucinations arise at least in part from processing abnormalities in posterior language regions. These language regions are either adjacent to or overlapping with regions in the (posterior) temporal cortex and temporo-parietal occipital junction that are part of a system for processing social cognition, emotion, and self representation or agency. The inferior parietal and posterior superior temporal regions contain multi-modal representational systems that may also provide

Model syndromes for investigating social cognitive and affective neuroscience: a comparison of Autism and Williams syndrome.

Autism and Williams syndrome are genetically based neurodevelopmental disorders that present strikingly different social phenotypes. Autism involves fundamental impairments in social reciprocity and communication, whereas people with Williams syndrome are highly sociable and engaging. This article reviews the behavioral and neuroimaging literature that has explored the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie these contrasting social phenotypes, focusing on studies of face processing. The article concludes with a discussion of how the social phenotypes of both syndromes may be characterized by

Deficits in facial emotion recognition in temporal lobe epilepsy: Comprehensive understanding from cognitive neuroscience perspectives.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a key aspect of social cognition, crucial for social interactions. Recent studies have focused on deficits in FER among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and the factors influencing these deficits. Research suggests that brain damage caused by epilepsy may lead to specific impairments in recognizing emotions, with lateralization of epilepsy and the emotional intensity of stimuli playing important roles. Additionally, interactions between emotion type, emotional intensity, and the age of onset of epilepsy may contribute to these recognition deficits.

Alzheimer's disease and the frontotemporal dementias: contributions to clinico-pathological studies, diagnosis, and cognitive neuroscience.

This review focuses on six key papers published in the mid 2000 s based on work conducted in Cambridge. The first two relate to clinico-pathological studies which established that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a relatively common cause of focal cortical syndromes, notably progressive aphasia (largely nonfluent), progressive apraxia, and posterior cortical atrophy with complex visual symptoms. Building on these findings, criteria for the progressive aphasias have been developed which define the variant associated with AD (progressive logopenic aphasia). Memory in the dementias has been a major ar
