Influence of two educational Escape Room- Breakout tools in PSTs' affective and cognitive domain in STEM (science and mathematics) courses.

During the last decade, there has been a strong emphasis on developing new instruction methodologies for the effective teaching of different contents. Here, it is important to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, specially, in scientific and mathematical concepts. In the context of active learning and gamification, educational Escape Room - Breakout (ERB) could be a useful strategy to improve students' affective and cognitive domain towards STEM (science and mathematics). Thus, two didactic tools, based on an ERB, have been designed to teach science and math

Short-term NO2 exposure and cognitive and mental health: A panel study based on a citizen science project in Barcelona, Spain.

BACKGROUND: The association between short-term exposure to air pollution and cognitive and mental health has not been thoroughly investigated so far. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a panel study co-designed with citizens to assess whether air pollution can affect attention, perceived stress, mood and sleep quality. METHODS: From September 2020 to March 2021, we followed 288 adults (mean age = 37.9 years; standard deviation = 12.1 years) for 14 days in Barcelona, Spain. Two tasks were self-administered daily through a mobile application: the Stroop color-word test to assess attention performance an

Computerized physical and cognitive training improves the functional architecture of the brain in adults with Down syndrome: A network science EEG study.

Understanding the neuroplastic capacity of people with Down syndrome (PwDS) can potentially reveal the causal relationship between aberrant brain organization and phenotypic characteristics. We used resting-state EEG recordings to identify how a neuroplasticity-triggering training protocol relates to changes in the functional connectivity of the brain's intrinsic cortical networks. Brain activity of 12 PwDS before and after a 10-week protocol of combined physical and cognitive training was statistically compared to quantify changes in directed functional connectivity in conjunction with psycho

AI as a differentiated cognitive partner in medical education: a comparative study of popular science versus research-based curriculum extensions in histology and embryology.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy of Popular Science (PS) and Research-Based (RS) curriculum extensions in a Histology and Embryology course, and explored how artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be designed as differentiated cognitive partners to support distinct pedagogical goals. METHODS: Two parallel first-year clinical medicine classes (N = 118) were non-randomly assigned to PS (n = 60) and RS (n = 58) arms. The PS group completed narrative, clinically connected tasks supported by the Intelligent Quiz Platform (IQP). The RS group undertook inquiry-driven literature analysis s

Adverse effects of obesity on cognitive functions in individuals at ultra high risk for bipolar disorder: Results from the global mood and brain science initiative.

BACKGROUND: The burden of illness associated with bipolar disorder (BD) warrants early pre-emption/prevention. Prediction models limited to psychiatric phenomenology have insufficient predictive power. Herein, we aimed to evaluate whether the presence of overweight/obesity is associated with greater cognitive decline in individuals at high risk (HR) or ultra high risk (UHR) for BD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis to investigate the moderational role of body mass index (BMI) on measures of cognitive function. Subjects between the ages of 8 and 28 years with a positive family his

Leveraging brain science for impactful advocacy and policymaking: The synergistic partnership between developmental cognitive neuroscientists and a parent-led grassroots movement to drive dyslexia prevention policy and legislation.

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic, vocational, and economic success and has been closely linked to health outcomes. Unfortunately, in the United States, a concerning 63% of fourth-grade children are reading below grade level, with approximately 7%-10% exhibiting a disability in word reading, developmental dyslexia. Research in developmental cognitive neuroscience indicates that individuals with dyslexia show functional and structural brain alterations in regions processing reading and reading-related information, with some of these differences emerging as early as preschool and even

Preventing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the general population induced by trauma during the COVID pandemic: A simple brief intervention based on cognitive science that could be delivered digitally.

Most of the recent studies indicated the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) are increasing after the COVID pandemic around the world. Bo et al. reported PTSS prevalence of 96.2% among the COVID-19-infected people. The sociocultural and individual vulnerability and protective factors may influence onset and maintenance of the symptoms. However, there is significant lack in understanding the risk factors and preventive factors that influence the maintenance of Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms that defines Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The digital technology gives us the u

What the func? Multiple realizability need not be vague.

Multiple realizability (MR) is not necessarily unclear nor does it purely operate at the computational level. To understand potential relationships between MR and other constraints, such as metabolic, we formalize possible meanings of function in cognitive science. We build on these to formalize MR, thus resolving its apparent vagaries. Importantly, MR formalisms meaningfully guide and constrain theory building.

Exploring relationships of human-automation interaction consequences on pilots: uncovering subsystems.

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to understand the latent structure underlying the systems pilots use to operate in situations involving human-automation interaction (HAI). BACKGROUND: HAI is an important characteristic of many modern work situations. Of course, the cognitive subsystems are not immediately apparent by observing a functioning system, but correlations between variables may reveal important relations. METHOD: The current report examined pilot judgments of 11 HAI dimensions (e.g., Workload, Task Management, Stress/Nervousness, Monitoring Automation, and Cross-Checking Automation) across

What can cognitive neuroscience teach us about anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex illness and highly challenging to treat. One promising approach to significantly advance our understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of AN involves developing a cognitive neuroscience model of illness. Cognitive neuroscience uses probes such as neuropsychological tasks and neuroimaging techniques to identify the neural underpinnings of behavior. With this approach, advances have been made in identifying higher-order cognitive processes that likely mediate symptom expression in AN. Identification of related neuropathology is beginning. Such findings le

Classifying strategy use in multiattribute subjective choice: Application to conjoint experiments in political science.

Conjoint experiments are extensively used across multiple disciplines to make inferences about preferences over multiattribute alternatives. Much previous research has analyzed the importance of attributes at the aggregate level. Here, we focus on understanding individual-level behavior and, specifically, on strategy use. We present a Bayesian cognitive model of strategy use that performs attribute weight inference (how important an attribute is), attribute level inference (which value of the attribute is favored), and latent-mixture inference to classify strategy use among well-established st

John Marshall and the cognitive neuropsychology of reading.

Contemporary cognitive neuropsychology owes a great debt to John Marshall. His pioneering work on acquired and developmental disorders of reading established the principles by which cognitive-neuropsychological theorizing operates as well as leading to a profound understanding of the nature of reading disorders which has subsequently influenced their assessment and treatment.

Analysis of cognitive framework and biomedical translation of tissue engineering in otolaryngology.

Tissue engineering is a relatively recent research area aimed at developing artificial tissues that can restore, maintain, or even improve the anatomical and/or functional integrity of injured tissues. Otolaryngology, as a leading surgical specialty in head and neck surgery, is a candidate for the use of these advanced therapies and medicinal products developed. Nevertheless, a knowledge-based analysis of both areas together is still needed. The dataset was retrieved from the Web of Science database from 1900 to 2020. SciMAT software was used to perform the science mapping analysis and the dat

FOUR APPROACHES TO THE UNCONSCIOUS.

BACKGROUND: The concept of the unconscious has evolved across disciplines, originating in philosophy, hypnosis, and psychoanalysis, and later redefined through modern neuroscience and cognitive science. Whereas early models primarily regarded it as a repository of repressed content, contemporary perspectives emphasize its adaptive, dynamic, multi-layered, and often non-pathological functions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This article provides a conceptual review of four major frameworks - psychoanalysis, Ericksonian hypnosis, cognitive sciences, and neuroscience. Through comparative analysis, it exa

Cognitive neurotoxicology: a luxury or necessity?

Impaired psychological test performance is often observed at concentrations of a neurotoxicant below those producing harmful effects on other organ systems. The importance of this distinctive susceptibility lies in the opportunity it provides for the early detection of dysfunction. From this perspective, it is essential to evolve sensitive psychological methods for studying these states of marginal toxicity. It is argued that a cognitive approach provides the necessary degree of sensitivity and specificity for characterizing these states. Given the growing interest in using cognitive models to

Reflections on David E. Rumelhart and the Rumelhart Prize.

The 25th anniversary of the Rumelhart Prize in Cognitive Science and a special issue of Topics in Cognitive Science celebrating the achievements of two recent Rumelhart Prize recipients provides an opportunity to reflect on the prize, the scientists that it honors, and the scientific values it seeks to promote. I offer my perspective on these topics as a long-time member of the Cognitive Science Society, a collaborator and friend of David Rumelhart, and as the first chair of the Rumelhart Prize selection committee. I see the prize as celebrating several aspects of what I believe many cognitive
