Extreme climate, rather than population history, explains mid-facial morphology of Northern Asians.

Previous studies have examined mid-facial cold adaptation among either widely dispersed and genetically very diverse groups of humans isolated for tens of thousands of years, or among very closely related groups spread over climatically different regions. Here we present a study of one East Asian and seven North Asian populations in which we examine the evidence for convergent adaptations of the mid-face to a very cold climate. Our findings indicate that mid-facial morphology is strongly associated with climatic variables that contrast the temperate climate of East Asians and the very cold and

Global change threatens the biodiversity of cold regions: Current knowledge and priorities for further research.

Cold regions are among the most pristine areas remaining globally, hosting unique fauna and flora. Historically, these regions have often been refugia from land-use change, resource exploitation, and pollution, but climate warming and biological invasions increasingly constitute profound threats. Focusing on terrestrial plant and invertebrate species, we provide an overview of the impacts of climate change and biological invasions on the biodiversity of cold regions, from the individual to the species level, and discuss pervasive challenges to understanding and managing these impacts. Local Thermal Adaptation in an Insect-Transmitted Plant Pathogen: The Role of Virulence Trade-Offs.

Little is known about local adaptation to temperature in bacterial pathogen populations in nature. For plant-pathogenic bacteria, local thermal adaptation may influence the evolution of virulence, which has strong implications for disease management and mitigation. Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is an insect-transmitted bacterial pathogen that infects over 700 plant species globally and causes Pierce's disease of grapevines. Here, we compared in vitro growth and in planta virulence of multiple strains from two genetically distinct Xf populations from California regions having either a colder climate

Tracheal tubes in cold stress.

During rescues in cold climates, plastic tracheal tubes have fractured because of cold stress or mishandling. Susceptibility of rubber and plastic tracheal tubes to cold stress was tested in a climate chamber. Plastic tubes became stiffer when chilled, had greater resistance to reshaping and were more sensitive to shock and manipulation. They also need protection against cold and shock during transport. Rubber tubes were more tolerant of cold stress. Very cold rubber and plastic tubes may induce tissue damage. Rewarming to a nondangerous temperature was shown to be a quick procedure. It is sug

Extreme climate exposure and cognitive function among older adults in China: The moderating role of age-friendly home modifications.

OBJECTIVES: As climate change accelerates and populations age, the cognitive health risks of extreme climate exposure is increasingly critical. This study investigated whether exposure to extreme heat, cold, and high precipitation affects cognitive function in older adults and whether age-friendly home modifications moderate these relationships. METHODS: We linked three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (2016, 2018, 2020; 21,789 observations from 7263 adults aged ≥ 60) to prefecture-level daily meteorological data. Extreme climate exposures were defined using location-spec

Clinical outcomes of temperature related injuries treated in the hospital setting, 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: Concerns over climate change have prompted substantial interest in temperature related injuries resulting from extreme weather conditions. Climate models predict that as global temperatures increase, the frequency and severity of extreme heat and cold weather events will grow which will likely increase the incidence of temperature related injury. The aim of this study was to analyze the healthcare impacts of temperature related injuries in the state of Illinois in order to serve as a model to guide future public health policy. METHODS: Outpatient and inpatient heat and cold relate

Climate and New World periosteal reaction patterns: implications for migration routes into the western hemisphere.

The presence of the diseases yaws and bejel are indicated by periosteal reaction patterns. The distributions of these two diseases in ancient North American human populations show evidence of climatic influence. Those ancient populations lacking either yaws or bejel (the null periosteal reaction pattern) can be found in the coldest parts of the Cold Winter Regions. Those populations with yaws (the poly-ostotic periosteal reaction) can be found in the milder portions of the Cold Winter Regions. The populations with bejel (the pauci-ostotic periosteal reaction) are found either outside of or mar

Trends and variability of temperature and precipitation extremes in Leh (Ladakh), India.

The Himalayas, a critical climatic barrier and water resource system for South Asia, are increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts. This study investigates long-term trends in temperature and precipitation in Leh, Ladakh, a cold-arid, high-altitude region spanning the western Himalaya and Karakoram, using gridded meteorological datasets spanning 1951-2024. The Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator were applied at 90% and 95% confidence levels to detect climatic trends, alongside analyses of departures from long-term normals. Results indicate a gradual warming tendency, particular

Cholinergic urticaria. A seasonal disease.

Nine young patients with cholinergic urticaria reported that the occurrence of the disease was restricted to winter. They were examined in a climatic room in winter and summer under three climatic conditions in each season (cold, comfort, and severe heat). All subjects experienced severe phenomena of cholinergic urticaria during the winter season when tested under comfortable climate and under severe heat load. No phenomena were elicited in the summer under any of the three climatic conditions or under cold climatic condition in the winter. This finding led to the assumption that symptoms appe

Disruption of Opioid Treatment Program Services Due to an Extreme Weather Event: An Example of Climate Change Effects on the Health of Persons Who Use Drugs.

Climate change and the opioid epidemic in combination may pose significant challenges for individuals with opioid use disorder due to potential disruptions in access to essential addiction treatment services caused by extreme weather events. Despite concerns over the escalating health impacts of climate change, limited research has documented and explored the vulnerability of patients enrolled in opioid treatment programs to disruptions caused by climate change and particularly extreme cold events. In this commentary, we describe the impact of a catastrophic flooding event during record-settin

Interpretable machine learning analysis of environmental characteristics on bacillary dysentery in Sichuan Province.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial dysentery (BD) is a leading cause of diarrhea-related mortality globally, with its incidence heavily influenced by environmental factors. However, a climate zone-specific predictive model for BD was currently lacking in Sichuan Province. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to employ interpretable machine learning to explore the influence of environmental factors on BD incidence across different climate zones and to elucidate their interaction mechanisms. METHODS: Monthly data on meteorological and ecological factors, along with BD case reports, were collected from 183 counties i

Cold stress during winter over North India: Patterns, trends, and mortality risks.

The cold temperatures during winter contribute to significant discomfort, causing cold stress to the lives of people. In this study, we investigate the cold stress conditions and their trends over north India during November - February for the period 1982-2020, using Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), a widely recognized biometeorological variable. The onset of cold stress typically initiates in the late evening (18 IST) and gradually spreads across the north India. It then intensifies over night into moderate cold stress, persisting from 20 IST until the early morning hours (7 IST). Cold

Recent and rapid ecogeographical rule reversals in Northern Treeshrews.

Two of the most-studied ecogeographical rules describe patterns of body size variation within species. Bergmann's rule predicts that individuals have larger body sizes in colder climates (typically at higher latitudes), and the island rule predicts that island populations of small-bodied species average larger in size than their mainland counterparts (insular gigantism). These rules are rarely tested in conjunction or assessed across space and time simultaneously. We investigated these patterns in the Northern Treeshrew (Tupaia belangeri) using museum specimens collected across a wide spatial

Seasonal variation in AF-related admissions to a coronary care unit in a "hot" climate: fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Seasonal variations in atrial fibrillation (AF)-related morbidity and mortality have been demonstrated in "cold" northern European climates, but there are few data describing such a phenomenon in a "hot" climate. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: To examine the pattern of AF-related admissions to a coronary care unit (CCU) in South Australia operating within a Mediterranean climate, and to determine potential differences according to mean daily temperatures. PATIENT COHORT AND METHODS: A total of 144 admissions to the CCU during the 30 hottest and coldest days (60 days in total) during the cale

Eco-Geographical Variation in Craniofacial Size and Shape, With Emphasis in Cold Adaptation, Through a 3D Approach.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines cranial morphological variations across populations adapted to different climates, with a focus on cold adaptation. Using a 3D geometric morphometric approach, the study analyzes skull variability between populations from various latitudes and climates. Two null hypotheses are tested: (1) differences in skull size and shape are unrelated to climate, and (2) no differences exist between populations with recent versus ancient cold adaptation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Skulls from five populations across different climates were analyzed using 3D geometric morphometr

Modelling the impacts of thermal stress on milk production in Sahiwal cows using random regression models integrated with NASA POWER data.

Climate change, through intensified heat and cold stress, increasingly threatens dairy cattle productivity. This study quantified milk yield losses due to thermal stress and evaluated the genetic basis of climatic resilience in Sahiwal cattle using random regression models (RRMs). A total of 132,548 daily milk yield (DMY) records from 500 Sahiwal cows maintained at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India, were analysed. Climatic variables from the NASA POWER (National Aeronautics and Space Administration Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources) database were used to estimate the

A global, proxy-based assessment of building climatization vulnerability.

Building compactness and construction epoch are relevant proxies of energy efficiency in buildings. By integrating building stock and Earth observation data, we characterize buildings globally and identify vulnerable areas dominated by old building age and unsuitable compactness in relation to climate conditions. Such areas are home to a population of 48 million persons that could increase by 10% to 30% by 2100 under likely socioeconomic pathways, shifting from cold regions of Eurasia to the heat-prone Sahel zone, Gulf countries and Pakistan. Results reveal stark disparities in building energy
