Cold Shock Proteins Are Expressed in the Retina Following Exposure to Low Temperatures.

Hypothermia has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention for some retinal conditions, including ischemic insults. Cold exposure elevates expression of cold-shock proteins (CSP), including RNA-binding motif protein 3 (RBM3) and cold inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP), but their presence in mammalian retina is so far unknown. Here we show the effects of hypothermia on the expression of these CSPs in retina-derived cell lines and in the retina of newborn and adult rats. Two cell lines of retinal origin, R28 and mRPE, were exposed to 32°C for different time periods and CSP expression was meas

The effect of hot beverages, cold beverages, and chewing gum on oral temperature.

BACKGROUND: A prospective blood donor's oral temperature is affected by external stimuli such as drinking a hot or cold beverage or chewing gum. These stimuli can cause a deferral or an inappropriate acceptance for a certain unknown time. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Ten volunteer subjects were exposed to each of the three stimuli in separate studies. Oral and tympanic membrane temperatures were taken before exposure, immediately after exposure, and at various times until the subject's temperature returned to baseline. RESULTS: The drinking of a hot beverage caused an immediate mean temperature

Temperature changes of the hypothalamus and body core in ducks feeding in cold water.

Hypothalamic (Thy), spinal(Tsc) and colonic (Tc) temperatures were measured in Pekin ducks spontaneously dabbling for food in cold water (5 degrees C). In agreement with observations in the pigeon and the fowl Thy was found to be consistently lower by about 0.5 degrees C than the other core temperatures. The drop of Thy during dipping head and neck into the cold water was not substantially greater than that of Tsc, while both changed more than Tc. The measurements do not support the assumption that the hypothalamic region in the duck is exposed to substantially greater temperature fluctuations

A cold and quiet brain: mechanisms of insect CNS arrest at low temperatures.

Exposure to cold causes insects to enter a chill coma at species-specific temperatures and such temperature sensitivity contributes to geographic distribution and phenology. Coma results from abrupt spreading depolarization (SD) of neural tissue in the integrative centers of the central nervous system (CNS). SD abolishes neuronal signaling and the operation of neural circuits, like an off switch for the CNS. Turning off the CNS by allowing ion gradients to collapse will conserve energy and may offset negative consequences of temporary immobility. SD is modified by prior experience via rapid co

Mortality Related to Cold Temperatures in Two Capitals of the Baltics: Tallinn and Riga.

Background and objectives: Despite global warming, the climate in Northern Europe is generally cold, and the large number of deaths due to non-optimal temperatures is likely due to cold temperatures. The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between cold temperatures and all-cause mortality, as well as cause-specific mortality, in Tallinn and Riga in North-Eastern Europe. Materials and Methods: We used daily information on deaths from state death registries and minimum temperatures from November to March over the period 1997-2015 in Tallinn and 2009-2015 in Riga. The relat

Frequent exposure to suboptimal temperatures in vaccine cold-chain system in India: results of temperature monitoring in 10 states.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the proportion of time the vaccines in the cold-chain system in India are exposed to temperatures of < 0 or > 8 °C. METHODS: In each of 10 states, the largest district and the one most distant from the state capital were selected for study. Four boxes, each containing an electronic temperature recorder and two vials of diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus vaccine, were placed in the state or regional vaccine store for each study state. Two of these boxes were then shipped - one per facility - towards the two most peripheral health facilities where vaccine was stored in eac

Temperature-dependent innate defense against the common cold virus limits viral replication at warm temperature in mouse airway cells.

Most isolates of human rhinovirus, the common cold virus, replicate more robustly at the cool temperatures found in the nasal cavity (33-35 °C) than at core body temperature (37 °C). To gain insight into the mechanism of temperature-dependent growth, we compared the transcriptional response of primary mouse airway epithelial cells infected with rhinovirus at 33 °C vs. 37 °C. Mouse airway cells infected with mouse-adapted rhinovirus 1B exhibited a striking enrichment in expression of antiviral defense response genes at 37 °C relative to 33 °C, which correlated with significantly higher expressi

Raynaud's phenomenon in vibration syndrome: the impact of cold feet on skin temperature and vasomotion of the hand after immersion in cold water.

Patients with vibration syndrome, suffering from Raynaud's phenomenon, are sensitive to cold. Rewarming time, after local cooling, is delayed. The present study evaluated whether rewarming of the hand after cooling is influenced by the temperature of the feet. In five Japanese patients (former forest workers) with vibration syndrome, suffering from Raynaud's phenomenon, and in five healthy controls, temperature changes of the hand after cooling were registered under the two test situations (on different days) with the feet immersed in water of 35 degrees C or 20 degrees C, respectively. Cold-inducible RNA binding protein regulates mucin expression induced by cold temperatures in human airway epithelial cells.

Mucus overproduction is an important manifestation of chronic airway inflammatory diseases, however, the mechanisms underlying the association between cold air and mucus overproduction remain unknown. We found that the expression of the cold-inducible RNA binding protein (CIRP) was increased in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In the present study, we tested whether CIRP was involved in inflammatory factors and mucin5AC (MUC5AC) expression after cold stimulation and investigated the potential signaling pathways involved in this process. We found that CIRP was highly

Effect of cold ambient temperature on heat flux, skin temperature, and thermal sensation at different body parts in elite biathletes.

INTRODUCTION: When exercising in the cold, optimizing thermoregulation is essential to maintain performance. However, no study has investigated thermal parameters with wearable-based measurements in a field setting among elite Nordic skiers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the thermal response and sensation measured at different body parts during exercise in a cold environment in biathletes. METHODS: Thirteen Swiss national team biathletes (6 females, 7 males) performed two skiing bouts in the skating technique on two consecutive days (ambient temperature: -3.74 ± 2.32 °C) at 78 ± 4% of

Cold and Room-Temperature Platelets in Cardiac Surgery: The CHIPS Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass often require platelet transfusions for bleeding. Platelets are routinely stored at room temperature (20-24 °C) for up to 5 to 7 days; however, cold storage (1-6 °C) may allow for increased storage duration without loss of hemostatic function. OBJECTIVE: To determine the maximum cold-storage duration, up to 21 days, for which cold-stored platelets (CSPs) are noninferior or superior in hemostatic efficacy to room-temperature platelets (RTPs) when transfused in actively bleeding patients undergoing cardiac surgery with

Temperature-responsive hydrogel-grafted vessel-on-a-chip: Exploring cold-induced endothelial injury.

Cold-induced vasoconstriction is a significant contributor that leads to chilblains and hypothermia in humans. However, current animal models have limitations in replicating cold-induced acral injury due to their low sensitivity to cold. Moreover, existing in vitro vascular chips composed of endothelial cells and perfusion systems lack temperature responsiveness, failing to simulate the vasoconstriction observed under cold stress. This study presents a novel approach where a microfluidic bioreactor of vessel-on-a-chip was developed by grafting the inner microchannel surface of polydimethylsilo

GCN2 is required to maintain core body temperature in mice during acute cold.

Nonshivering thermogenesis in rodents requires macronutrients to fuel the generation of heat during hypothermic conditions. In this study, we examined the role of the nutrient sensing kinase, general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2) in directing adaptive thermogenesis during acute cold exposure in mice. We hypothesized that GCN2 is required for adaptation to acute cold stress via activation of the integrated stress response (ISR) resulting in liver production of FGF21 and increased amino acid transport to support nonshivering thermogenesis. In alignment with our hypothesis, female and male mi

Regulation of ram scrotal temperature during heat exposure, cold exposure, fever and exercise.

1. We measured body core and scrotal temperatures (Tbody and Tscrotum, respectively) of rams during 5 h of hot (40 degrees C) and cold (6 degrees C) exposure, for 6 h following intravenous injections of saline (0.9% NaCl) or 0.4 micrograms kg-1 of the purified lipopolysaccharide endotoxin of Salmonella typhosa (LPS), during 40 min of treadmill exercise, and for several days in their pens. 2. At 20-23 degrees C ambient temperature there were significant, but out of phase, circadian variations in Tbody and Tscrotum. Tscrotum was 3.30 +/- 0.03 degrees C lower than Tbody on average. 3. During cold

Single and repeat ischemic preconditioning unable to modify cold-induced vasodilation or cold air finger skin temperatures and manual dexterity.

Cold-induced peripheral vasoconstriction reduces skin blood flow, skin temperatures, and manual dexterity. This study proposed the use of single and repeated ischemic preconditioning (IPC) before cold exposure to 1) improve peripheral skin temperatures, blood flow, and manual dexterity during 90 min of 0°C cold air exposure with exposed hands cold air (CA); 2) enhance the cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response to 30 min of 8°C dual-hand water immersion and rewarming (CWI); and 3) improve thermal perceptions during both exposures. Seventeen volunteers (16 males, 1 female) completed a repeate

The effects of cold temperature on the development, microbiome, and transcriptome of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis.

Thermal conditions impact essentially all aspects of the physiology for ectotherms. While the effects of high temperatures have been widely studied, cold temperature effects on aquatic invertebrates and their microbial communities have been poorly characterized. To determine the diverse effects of exposure to cold temperatures, we assessed acute and long-term impacts of ecologically relevant low temperatures on the development, microbiome, and gene expression of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis. Two hours post fertilization, embryos were exposed to temperatures from 4°C to 35°C and devel

The influence of cold temperature exposure on markers of bone health in humans: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Studies of cold-dwelling humans show lower bone mineral density (BMD) and greater age-related bone loss. While cold exposure is regularly used for analgesic purposes, prolonged use may unintentionally exacerbate symptoms it aims to treat. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate human evidence on the effects of cold exposure upon markers of bone health. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Ensuring quality and integrity of vaccines throughout the cold chain: the role of temperature monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccines have continually proven their inestimable value to the world through the eradication of smallpox, gains achieved toward a polio-free world, and controlling other vaccine-preventable diseases. Although vaccines require certain temperatures and conditions to maintain their potency, supply chain controls vary greatly at different legs of the global journey. Vaccine manufacture is closely managed, but inconsistencies plague the cold chain when vaccines are shipped and stored in variable conditions. Monitoring vaccine temperatures throughout the cold chain is of paramount imp
