This review synthesizes the molecular mechanisms of cold tolerance in pepper, integrating multi-omics data, genome editing, and precision breeding strategies to accelerate the development of cold-resilient cultivars. Cold stress is a significant environmental factor that affects the growth, productivity, and fruit quality of Capsicum annuum by impairing membrane integrity photosynthesis and cellular redox homeostasis. Although pepper has several endogenous cold-responsive regulators such as CaNAC035 and CabHLH035, along with antioxidant defense systems, its cold tolerance remains limited due to

Abnormal seawater temperatures driven by global climate change are profoundly disrupting the physiological homeostasis and immune regulation of marine fish. As a warm-blooded pelagic species, yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) possesses partial thermoregulatory capability but still experiences significant physiological stress under abrupt cold exposure. The spleen, a key immune and metabolic organ, is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations and serves as a critical indicator of cold stress effects. In this study, juvenile yellowfin tuna were subjected to cold stress at 24 °C (LT group) an

Acute cold stress can elicit distinct molecular responses even when bay scallop populations show similar phenotypic outcomes. We compared a seventh-generation fast-growing bay scallop line (BS) with a commercial control population (CC) during a 72-h acute cold exposure at -1 ± 0.3 °C. RNA-seq was used as the discovery layer, representative BS cold-responsive genes were evaluated by qRT-PCR, and paired LC-MS profiles provided a comparative metabolic layer. At baseline, 138 genes differed between BS and CC; after cold exposure, 134 of these baseline differences disappeared and 61 of 65 cold-stat

The worldwide distribution of qnr genes found on plasmids and their presence on the chromosomes of aquatic bacteria, such as Vibrio vulnificus, one of the suspected sources, suggests an origin before the development of synthetic quinolones. However, their native function remains unknown. Previous work indicated that expression of qnrVv in V. vulnificus was induced by cold shock. To investigate its role further, we constructed single in-frame deletion mutants in qnrVv and cspA (the gene for cold shock protein) and a double mutant in qnrVv and cspA in V. vulnificus ATCC 17562 to evaluate the res

The expression of bacterial cold-shock proteins (CSPs) is highly induced in response to cold shock, and some CSPs are essential for cells to resume growth at low temperature. Bordetella bronchiseptica encodes five CSPs (named CspA to CspE) with significant amino acid homology to CspA of Escherichia coli. In contrast to E. coli, the insertional knock-out of a single csp gene (cspB) strongly affected growth of B. bronchiseptica independent of temperature. In the case of three of the csp genes (cspA, cspB, cspC) more than one specific transcript could be detected. The net amount of cspA, cspB and

Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is a global burden, as more than 90% of NE occurs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Perinatal infection seems to limit the neuroprotective efficacy of therapeutic hypothermia. Efforts made to use therapeutic hypothermia in LMICs treating NE has led to increased neonatal mortality rates. The heat shock and cold shock protein responses are essential for survival against a wide range of stressors during which organisms raise their core body temperature and temporarily subject themselves to thermal and cold stress in the face of infection. The characteristic

The gut microbiota is essential for helping animals to adapt to food shortages and extreme environments. In China's Hulunbuir region, local grazing sheep endure harsh winters characterized by intense cold and limited food supply. Uncovering the adaptive mechanisms that underpin their resilience is essential for improving their productivity, breeding practices, and management strategies. This research investigated the effects of feed restriction (set at 40 % of ad libitum intake) and extreme cold stress (temperature-humidity index set at 22.27) on the dynamics of gut microbiota in Hulunbuir she

Plants have evolved sophisticated defense mechanisms to overcome their sessile nature. However, if and how volatiles from cold-stressed plants can trigger interplant communication is still unknown. Here, we provide the first evidence for interplant communication via inducible volatiles in cold stress. The volatiles, including nerolidol, geraniol, linalool, and methyl salicylate, emitted from cold-stressed tea plants play key role(s) in priming cold tolerance of their neighbors via a C-repeat-binding factors-dependent pathway. The knowledge will help us to understand how plants respond to volat

Alternative splicing (AS) is crucial for gene expression regulation during cold adaptation, yet its role in fish remains unclear. This study revealed tissue-specific AS patterns in zebrafish, with the gill exhibiting the highest AS frequency, followed by the skin, ovary and brain. Cold exposure significantly altered splicing sites across tissues, with exon skipping (SE) being the predominant AS form. Alternative splicing genes (ASGs) displayed strong tissue specificity, and splicing variability correlated with temperature, suggesting AS acts as a temperature-sensitive regulatory mechanism. Spl

Cold-induced thermogenesis (CIT) is widely studied as a potential avenue to treat obesity, but a thorough understanding of the metabolic changes driving CIT is lacking. Here, we present a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the metabolic response to acute cold exposure, leveraging metabolomic profiling and minimally perturbative isotope tracing studies in unanesthetized mice. During cold exposure, brown adipose tissue (BAT) primarily fueled the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle with fat in fasted mice and glucose in fed mice, underscoring BAT's metabolic flexibility. BAT minimally used bra

PURPOSE: Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) is a peripheral blood flow response, observed in both the hands and feet. Exercise has been shown to enhance the response, specifically by increasing mean skin temperatures (Tsk), in part due to the increased number of CIVD waves. In contrast, hypobaric hypoxia has been suggested to impair digit skin temperature responses, particularly during subsequent hand rewarming following the cold stimulus. This study examined the combined effect of exercise and hypobaric hypoxia on the CIVD response. We compared the CIVD responses in the digits of both the han

Thermal and hypoxic stress commonly coexist in environmental, occupational and clinical settings, yet how the brain tolerates these multi-stressor environments is unknown Core cooling by 1.0°C reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) by 20-30% and cerebral oxygen delivery (CDO2 ) by 12-19% at sea level and high altitude, whereas core heating by 1.5°C did not reliably reduce CBF or CDO2 Oxygen content in arterial blood was fully restored with acclimatisation to 4330 m, but concurrent cold stress reduced CBF and CDO2 Gross indices of cognition were not impaired by any combination of thermal and hypoxic

This review aims to update our understanding of human cold adaptation. First, an overview of the thermoregulatory response to cold is provided, with some recent updates in human brown adipose tissue (BAT). Variation in BAT activity and multiorgan contributions to cold-induced thermogenesis were introduced. We found that individuals with less BAT activity rely more on shivering to compensate for less non-shivering thermogenesis (NST). The mechanisms of cold-induced vasoconstriction are summarized, including the role of arteriovenous anastomoses, adrenergic neural function, and inhibition of the

Cold stress adversely affects cotton growth and development often causing morphological abnormalities during germination and seedling establishment. Nevertheless, the molecular and metabolic mechanisms conferring cold tolerance in cotton remain largely unclear. The study aimed to examine the morphological and physiological responses of two semi-wild Gossypium hirsutum accessions, the cold resistant Latifolium (CR-307) and cold susceptible Punctatum (CS-131) under cold stress. The experiment was conducted at two temperature regimes: 28-30 °C (control) and 4 °C for 96 h (cold stress). In compari

Grapevine is an economically important fruit crop worldwide and is susceptible to low temperature stress. Protein post-translational modifications play a crucial role in grapevine cold tolerance. Here, we performed integrated proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses of Vitis amurensis, identifying widespread phosphorylation alterations across 4797 proteins and 10,104 phosphorylation sites distributed in 56 motifs. Cold treatment induced 165 differential phosphorylation proteins and 635 differential phosphorylation sites. Functional enrichment indicates that these proteins are predominantly invo

The effects of long-term cold stimulation on the immune function of ileum and adaptability to cold stress in broilers were examined. A total of 360 Arbor Acres broilers was divided into 3 groups and four replicates per group. C (control) was reared in normal thermal environment. C-3 and C-12 (treatments) were kept in cold condition of 3 or 12°C lower than the temperature of C from days 8 to 42. At day 42, all the groups were exposed to an acute cold stress challenge, designated as S, S-3, and S-12. The mRNA levels of immune molecules and heat shock proteins as well as oxidative stress-related

This study evaluated the effects of chronic cold stress on metabolism, colostrum quality, and early lamb performance in two environmentally resilient sheep breeds: Morkaraman and Awassi. The study included 20 ewes (10 each breed) and their lambs (10 per breed). This study evaluated serum biochemical parameters and colostrum quality and composition in sheep and assessed the growth performance of lambs during the first seven days of life under cold environmental conditions. Findings indicated that Morkaraman lambs exhibited higher birth weights and superior growth rates compared to Awassi lambs

Low-temperature stress is a critical abiotic constraint that severely impairs rice yield and quality, posing a substantial threat to global food security-especially as rice, a staple food for more than half of the world's population, is inherently susceptible to cold stress. This review systematically summarizes the typical phenotypic and physiological impairments induced by cold stress across key rice growth stages, and elaborates on the multi-layered molecular regulatory networks underpinning rice cold tolerance, which integrate the entire process of cold signal perception, intracellular tra

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors ICEs (Inducer of CBF Expression) are pivotal regulators of plant cold stress responses, acting by orchestrating the transcription of COR (cold-responsive) genes. While the ICEs-dependent transcriptional control of COR genes expression remains poorly understood. As an evolutionarily conserved transcriptional coactivator, the Mediator complex bridges gene-specific transcription factors with the RNA polymerase II (Pol II) machinery to modulate gene transcription, yet whether and how Mediator complex participates in ICEs-dependent transcripti

Climate change-induced stressors such as extreme temperatures negatively affect plant growth and development. Therefore, methods are needed to improve plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the foliar application of putrescine (Put) and a chitosan-putrescine nanocomposite (Ch-Put) can modulate the antioxidant response and membrane properties of lettuce under chilling stress. In this study, Put and Ch-Put were applied via foliar spraying at two concentrations (1 mM and 2.5 mM), and after treatment, the plants were placed in a phytotron at 4 °C and 20
