Predictive validity of the MCAT for students with two sets of scores.

Addressed in the study reported here is the question of which set of scores for those students who retake the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) yields a better predictive validity. The sample was comprised of 304 students who retook the MCAT prior to entering Jefferson Medical College between 1978 and 1981. Five sets of MCAT scores were considered as predictors in the study: earlier, later, higher, and lower sets of MCAT scores and the average of the earlier and later scores for each MCAT subtest. Twenty-five criteria were used, including grades earned in the freshman and sophomore years a

Does emotional intelligence influence success during medical school admissions and program matriculation?: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: It aimed at determining whether emotional intelligence is a predictor for success in a medical school program and whether the emotional intelligence construct correlated with other markers for admission into medical school. METHODS: Three databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and ERIC) were searched up to and including July 2016, using relevant terms. Studies written in English were selected if they included emotional intelligence as a predictor for success in medical school, markers of success such as examination scores and grade point average and association with success defined through tradi

Twenty Questions game performance on medical school entrance predicts clinical performance.

CONTEXT: This study is based on the premise that the game of 'Twenty Questions' (TQ) tests the knowledge people acquire through their lives and how well they organise and store it so that they can effectively retrieve, combine and use it to address new life challenges. Therefore, performance on TQ may predict how effectively medical school applicants will organise and store knowledge they acquire during medical training to support their work as doctors. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine whether TQ game performance on medical school entrance predicts performance on a clinical pe

A comparison of statistical criteria for setting optimally discriminating MCAT and GPA thresholds in medical school admissions.

BACKGROUND: Using Medical College Admission Test-grade point average (MCAT-GPA) scores as a threshold has the potential to address issues raised in recent Supreme Court cases, but it introduces complicated methodological issues for medical school admissions. PURPOSE: To assess various statistical indexes to determine optimally discriminating thresholds for MCAT-GPA scores. METHODS: Entering classes from 1992 through 1998 (N = 752) are used to develop guidelines for cut scores that optimize discrimination between students who pass and do not pass the United States Medical Licensing Examinatio

Predictive validity of the National Benchmark Test and National Senior Certificate for the academic success of first-year medical students at one South African university.

BACKGROUND: South African medical schools use the results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination for selecting students. Five of the nine medical schools also use the National Benchmark Test (NBT). The University of the Witwatersrand weights the NSC and NBT results equally in the selection process. This study addresses the predictive validity of the NBT and NSC for academic success. The association between the NBT proficiency levels and students' progression outcomes was also investigated. METHODS: Data obtained from the University's Business Intelligence Services for 1652 first

Impact of preadmission variables on USMLE step 1 and step 2 performance.

PURPOSE: To examine the predictive ability of preadmission variables on United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) step 1 and step 2 performance, incorporating the use of a neural network model. METHOD: Preadmission data were collected on matriculants from 1998 to 2004. Linear regression analysis was first used to identify predictors of performance on step 1 and step 2. A generalized regression neural network (GRNN) as well as a feed forward neural network (FFNN) was then developed in an effort to more accurately predict step 1 and step 2 scores from these preadmission data. Predictive validity of the Biomedical Admissions Test: an evaluation and case study.

There has been an increase in the use of pre-admission selection tests for medicine. Such tests need to show good psychometric properties. Here, we use a paper by Emery and Bell [2009. The predictive validity of the Biomedical Admissions Test for pre-clinical examination performance. Med Educ 43:557-564] as a case study to evaluate and comment on the reporting of psychometric data in the field of medical student selection (and the comments apply to many papers in the field). We highlight pitfalls when reliability data are not presented, how simple zero-order associations can lead to inaccurate

Relationship between past academic performance and results of specialty in-training examinations.

In this study, the authors review the records of 63 graduates of Northwestern University Medical School who were residents in its graduate medical education programs of anesthesia and orthopedic surgery. They examine the relationship among college grades, medical school performance, and the results of assessment by annual, nationwide, medical specialty in-training examinations. For the anesthesia group, the best predictors of in-training examination performance were the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) Verbal Ability score, the college grade-point average for nonscience subjects, and the

Parental medical background and pre-admission preparedness in China's medical student selection.

INTRODUCTION: While children of medical professionals are globally overrepresented in medical schools, evidence from China remains limited. This study examines parental medical background prevalence among Chinese medical undergraduates, its association with admission outcomes, and disparities in pre-admission preparedness within China's meritocratic National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) system - a critical context given its role as the primary gateway to higher education. METHODS: Using data from the 2021 China Medical Student Survey (CMSS), a nationally representative sample of 19,299

MCAT Verbal Reasoning score: less predictive of medical school performance for English language learners.

CONTEXT: Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores are widely used as part of the decision-making process for selecting candidates for admission to medical school. Applicants who learned English as a second language may be at a disadvantage when taking tests in their non-native language. Preliminary research found significant differences between English language learners (ELLs), applicants who learned English after the age of 11 years, and non-ELL examinees on the Verbal Reasoning (VR) sub-test of the MCAT. The purpose of this study was to determine if relationships between VR sub-test scor

Predictive validity of the Dundee multiple mini-interview.

CONTEXT: The multiple mini-interview (MMI) is the primary admissions tool used to assess non-cognitive skills at Dundee Medical School. Although the MMI shows promise, more research is required to demonstrate its transferability and predictive validity, for instance, relative to other UK pre-admissions measures. METHODS: Applicants were selected for interview based on a combination of measures derived from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) form (academic achievement, medical experience, non-academic achievement and references) and the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) in

General practitioners' perspectives on revised entry and selection methods to medicine and the HPAT.

Revised selection mechanisms to medicine now include an adjunct admission test known as the HPAT. Stakeholder acceptability is a key issue. General Practitioners (GPs) represent an important stakeholder group. A questionnaire was administered to a regional sample of GPs evaluating their knowledge of the new selection system, views on acceptability, performance on sample HPAT questions and perceptions of their relevance. 92 respondents (75.4%) reported they had little or no knowledge of the HPAT. GPs supported the use of aptitude tests (85 respondents 69.7%). However almost one third (39 respon

The Relationship Between Preclinical Grading and USMLE Scores in US Allopathic Medical Schools.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pass/fail preclinical grading is associated with improved student well-being. Studies do not demonstrate differences in United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores after adopting pass/fail grading, but were conducted at unrepresentative, highly selective institutions, and average scores increased overall during the study periods. We investigated the effect of preclinical grading on USMLE scores across 96 US medical schools. METHODS: Preclinical grading systems were identified with the 2017 Association of American Medical Colleges Medical School Admiss
