Endophytic microorganisms from 'Bordô' grapes as biological control agents against Colletotrichum and Botrytis.

Colletotrichum spp. and Botrytis cinerea are the main causal agents of grape bunch rot in Brazil. Although chemical control is widely used, it has limitations, such as the selection of resistant pathogen populations and environmental concerns. Biological control emerges as a promising alternative; however, commercial products for viticulture remain limited. We hypothesized that by prospecting endophytic microorganisms from berries of Vitis hosts more resistant to rots, it would be possible to identify isolates with greater biocontrol potential. In this study, 52 endophytic isolates from berrie

Salicylic acid signaling controls the colonization behavior of Colletotrichum tofieldiae in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plant-microbe interactions strongly influence plant growth and nutrient acquisition, and their outcomes depend on nutrient availability. The root endophyte Colletotrichum tofieldiae (Ct) promotes growth in Arabidopsis thaliana under inorganic phosphate (Pi) limitation, but its effects under Pi sufficiency and the role of salicylic acid (SA) signaling remain unclear. Here, we examined Pi-dependent growth responses, nutrient accumulation, and SA signaling in wild-type (WT) and SA-deficient ics1 mutant plants co-cultivated with Ct under low, moderate, and high Pi conditions (25, 150, and 625 µM).

PeTGA1 enhances disease resistance against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides through directly regulating PeSARD1 in poplar.

Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins play important roles in responding to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms of plant resistance to pathogens remain largely unclear in poplar. The present study isolated a TGACG-binding (TGA) transcription factor, PeTGA1, from Populus euphratica. PeTGA1 belongs to subgroup D of the bZIP family and was localized to the nucleus. To study the role PeTGA1 plays in response to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, transgenic triploid white poplars overexpressing PeTGA1 were generated. Results showed that poplars with overexpressed Pe

The Use of Essential Oils from Thyme, Sage and Peppermint against Colletotrichum acutatum.

The Colletotrichum spp. is a significant strawberry pathogen causing yield losses of up to 50%. The most common method to control plant diseases is through the use of chemical fungicides. The findings of plants antimicrobial activities, low toxicity, and biodegradability of essential oils (EO), make them suitable for biological protection against fungal pathogens. The aim is to evaluate the inhibition of Colletotrichum acutatum by thyme, sage, and peppermint EO in vitro on detached strawberry leaves and determine EO chemical composition. Our results revealed that the dominant compound of thyme

Colletotrichum fioriniae Development in Water and Chloroform-based Blueberry and Cranberry Floral Extracts.

To accurately monitor the phenology of the bloom period and the temporal dynamics of floral chemical cues on fungal fruit rotting pathogens, floral extraction methods and coverslip bioassays were developed utilizing Colletotrichum fioriniae. In blueberry and cranberry, this pathogen is optimally controlled by applying fungicides during the bloom period because of the role flowers play in the initial stages of infection. The protocol detailed here describes how floral extracts (FE) were obtained using water-, chloroform-, and field rainwater-based methods for later use in corresponding glass co

Developmentally regulated sesquiterpene production confers resistance to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in ripe pepper fruits.

Sesquiterpenoid capsidiol, exhibiting antifungal activity against pathogenic fungus, is accumulated in infected ripe pepper fruits. In this study, we found a negative relation between the capsidiol level and lesion size in fruits infected with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, depending on the stage of ripening. To understand the developmental regulation of capsidiol biosynthesis, fungal-induced gene expressions in the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathways were examined in unripe and ripe pepper fruits. The sterol biosynthetic pathway was almost shut down in healthy ripe fruits, showing very low expr

Temporal accumulation of salicylic acid activates the defense response against Colletotrichum in strawberry.

Many authors have reported interactions between strawberry cultivars and pathogenic microorganisms, yet little is known about the mechanisms triggered in the plant. In this paper we examine the participation of the salicylic acid (SA) signaling pathway involved in the response of Fragaria x ananassa cv. Pájaro plants to pathogens. Strawberry plants were challenged with the virulent strain M11 of Colletotrichum acutatum, or with the avirulent strain M23 of Colletotrichum fragariae which confers resistance to the former. Our study showed that the isolate M23 induced a temporal SA accumulation th

Antifungal activity and molecular mechanisms of mulberrin derivatives against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides for mango storage.

In this work, by using high throughput virtual screening and bioactivity assays, this work revealed that three natural compounds, mulberrin (Mul) exhibiting the highest anti-CYP51 activity, isoxanthohumol and (s)-isopsoralen markedly inhibited 14α-demethylase (a pivotal biosynthetic enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of ergosterol) in Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Results of computational biology analysis demonstrated that, among the three inhibitors bound to the catalytic pocket of CYP51, Mul showed a closer distance with heme in CYP51 and a stronger binding free energy with CYP51. Antifungal Activity of Essential Oils from Three Artemisia Species against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides of Mango.

Post-harvest diseases of mango reduce fruit quality and cause severe yield losses with completely unmarketable fruits. The most common diseases of mangos are anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides). In this study, the antibacterial activities of essential oils from Artemisia scoparia, Artemisia lavandulaefolia, and Artemisia annua against C. gloeosporioides were tested. The results showed that the essential oil of A. scoparia was more effective by the agar diffusion method; the EC50 value was 9.32 µL/mL. The inhibition rate was 100%, at a concentration of 10 μL/mL, through the spore germi

Influence of Environmental Factors on the Growth of Colletotrichum godetiae, Causal Agents of Olive Anthracnose in Spain.

Olive anthracnose, the most critical disease affecting fruit and oil quality, is caused by Colletotrichum species, with C. godetiae dominant in Italian and Spanish orchards. Climate change could exacerbate its impact, particularly through rising temperatures and altered CO2 levels. This study evaluated the growth of two C. godetiae strains (Col-558 and Col-493) on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and 'Picudo' fruit-agar medium in different assays. Firstly, the strains were incubated at 10°C, 20°C, 25°C and 35°C and CO2 concentrations of 400 and 1000 ppm. Secondly, both strains were grown at the same

Antifungal activity of plant extracts against Colletotrichum lagenarium, the causal agent of anthracnose in cucumber.

BACKGROUND: Colletotrichum lagenarium is an important plant-pathogenic fungus that causes anthracnose of cucumber, a disease that is widespread under both greenhouse and field cultivation. To find a promising method for the control of this disease, extracts of eight plants from China were screened in the study presented here. RESULTS: The results showed that the extract of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl had significantly greater inhibitory activity against C. lagenarium than the other seven plant extracts tested in vitro. At 5 days after inoculation in a potted seedling experiment, C. camphor

A mini-chromosome transcription factor CaGATA1 activates aldehyde dehydrogenase to regulate pathogenicity in Colletotrichum asianum.

Mini-chromosomes play pivotal roles in pathogenicity and host adaptation by filamentous plant pathogens, however the regulatory mechanisms underlying their virulence functions remain poorly understood. Here, we identified a novel GATA transcription factor, CaGATA1, encoded on the mini-chromosome of Colletotrichum asianum. CaGATA1 expression was markedly induced during infection. Functional analyses demonstrated that although CaGATA1 is dispensable for vegetative growth, it is essential for conidiation, appressorial formation, tolerance to oxidative stresses, and full virulence. Spore type-specific gene expression profiles underlying development and leaf infection processes of Colletotrichum graminicola.

Colletotrichum graminicola causes significant losses of the staple crop maize worldwide. The fungus produces two distinct asexual spore types, oval and falcate conidia, which show unique processes in development and plant interaction. Based on genome resequencing of our laboratory strain (CgM2/M1.001), we investigated the gene expression profiles of oval and falcate conidia during development and early leaf infection using RNA-seq. Our results reveal specific gene expression profiles between the two spore types, indicating fundamental differences in their developmental programs that reflect di

CsWRKY33 Integrates Immune Signalling and Metabolic Reprogramming to Enhance Tea Plant Resistance Against Colletotrichum camelliae.

Tea anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum camelliae, poses a serious threat to tea yield and quality. While certain transcription factors have been implicated in stress responses, the core transcriptional networks governing immunity in tea plants remain largely elusive. In this study, we identify CsWRKY33 as a central regulator that orchestrates immune responses and metabolic reprogramming during C. camelliae infection in tea plants. Transcriptome analysis revealed that CsWRKY33 is significantly induced upon fungal challenge and functions downstream of both pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and

Two new Colletotrichum species from Michelia × alba and Myristica fragrans in Hainan Province, China.

Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men. Although poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARP inhibitor) are approved for mCRPC patients with homologous recombination repair (HRR) deficiencies, clinical trials combining Olaparib with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors have shown limited efficacy in unselected populations. To investigate the immunomodulatory effects of PARP inhibitor in an unbiased manner, we performed bulk RNA sequencing on HRR-proficient MycCaP cells treated with the PARP inhibitor (Olaparib) versus vehicle contro

Functional Roles of Two β-Tubulin Isotypes in Regulation of Sensitivity of Colletotrichum fructicola to Carbendazim.

Colletotrichum fructicola is the major pathogen of anthracnose in tea-oil trees in China. Control of anthracnose in tea-oil trees mainly depends on the application of chemical fungicides such as carbendazim. However, the current sensitivity of C. fructicola isolates in tea-oil trees to carbendazim has not been reported. Here, we tested the sensitivity of 121 C. fructicola isolates collected from Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Jiangxi provinces in China to carbendazim. One hundred and ten isolates were sensitive to carbendazim, and 11 isolates were highly resistant to
