OBJECTIVE: Transforaminal endoscopic colloid cyst resection is well described. However, some anatomical colloid cyst variants may warrant a modified approach. Rarely, colloid cysts separate the forniceal columns and grow superiorly within the leaflets of the septum pellucidum. Thus, the authors' goal was to characterize the imaging features, clinical presentation, surgical strategy, and outcomes of patients with this superiorly recessed colloid cyst variant.
METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of patients who underwent endoscopic resection of colloid cysts from 1999 to 2020 was performed. The

INTRODUCTION: Colloid cysts are uncommon in children. They occur more frequently in young adults.
METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective study on all pediatric patients (<or=18 years) with colloid cysts treated surgically in our institute between 1977 and 2005.
RESULTS: A total of 43 patients with colloid cyst were treated surgically. Seven pediatric patients (16% of the total number of patients) were identified. Patients' ages ranged from 6 to 18 years (mean of 14.1+/-4.67). They all presented clinically with symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure. Radiologically, the cyst size

We report the case of a man of aged 27 years who presented with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by a colloid cyst of the third ventricle. He was found to have an additional and larger colloid cyst lying adjacent to it, but within the lateral ventricle. The contents of the two cysts were of different consistency. We have been able to find only one previous report of more than one colloid cyst occurring in the same patient and none where one of the cysts lay within the lateral ventricle.

Ten cases of colloid cysts of the third ventricle were evaluated by computed tomography (CT). The smallest lesion demonstrated was 6 mm in diameter and the largest 6.5 cm. Six lesions were hyperdense and four isodense. None of the lesions exhibited significant enhancement after the administration of contrast medium. A non-contrast CT scan is essential for the demonstration of a small hyperdense colloid cyst as the latter may simulate normal vascular structures on the post-contrast scan.

A 4-year-old boy had three neuroepithelial cysts, one in the third ventricle and two in the supratentorial subarachnoid space, and also had stenosis of the cerebral aqueduct, obstructive internal hydrocephalus, frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele, and right microphthalmia. The occurence of these combined lesions supports the congenitially derived nature of the cysts. The cysts originated from neuroepithelium including ectopic ependyma-lined structures. The exception may be those cysts arising in or near the floor of the third ventricle; these cysts could be derived from the cleft of Rathke's

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are rare, benign brain tumors often located in the third ventricle or near the foramen of Monro. They can evoke neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms including migraine, visual changes, memory loss, and sudden loss of consciousness. They are associated with high mortality due to late moderate-to-severe symptom presentation and limited access to neurological and/or neurosurgical expertise. The Colloid Cyst Symptoms Survey (CCSS) was designed and administered anonymously using REDCap and posted to the Colloid Cyst Survivors Facebook group for 6 months in 2022. The CCSS

Colloid cysts account for approximately 2% of primary brain tumours and the majority of cases are identified in the fourth and fifth decade. They are small, gelatinous neoplasms lined by a single layer of mucin-secreting columnar epithelium that are thought to arise from errors in folding of the primitive neuroepithelium. They develop in the rostral aspect of the third ventricle in the foramen of Monro in 99% of cases and despite their benign histology carry a poor prognosis, with a mortality greater than 10% in symptomatic cases. The location of colloid cysts within the ventricular system res

Colloid cysts are benign space-occupying lesions, which arise from the velum interpositum or the choroid plexus of the third ventricle and are able to produce symptomatic obstruction of the foramina of Monro with resultant hydrocephalus. In our department, we have operated on colloid cysts routinely in an endoscope-assisted microsurgical manner via a key-hole approach. During a period of 10 years, 28 microsurgical resections of colloid cysts of the third ventricle were performed. Seven patients demonstrated colloid cysts inside the third ventricle with obstruction of the right foramen Monro, t

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare central nervous system tumors that are a recognized cause of unexpected death in young, otherwise healthy adults and children. We report three adults and one child who died from colloid cysts of the third ventricle. Our report illustrates the difficulties of diagnosing these tumors premortem.

BACKGROUND: This study develops the Modified Colloid Cyst Risk Score (MCCRS), a novel, evidence-based tool designed to identify patients with colloid cysts at high risk for clinical deterioration and obstructive hydrocephalus.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify clinical indicators associated with worsening outcomes in colloid cyst patients. The MCCRS was constructed through expert consensus utilizing the modified Delphi technique. Its validity and reliability were subsequently evaluated.
RESULTS: The review included 34 studies that met inclusion criteria. The MCCRS compri

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare; however, they may be symptomatic. They can create a mass effect on the foramina of Monro, resulting in acute hydrocephalus. Colloid cysts are detectable on CT and MRI but are commonly missed. In this paper, we investigate the rate of missed colloid cysts on MRI and/or CT imaging within our multihospital metropolitan medical group.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective, institutional review board-approved search of the network-wide picture archiving and communication system (PACS) from January 1, 2010, to Octo

This protocol describes a minimally invasive endoscopic technique for the removal of colloid cysts located in the third ventricle. These cysts are a rare type of intracranial lesion that can obstruct cerebrospinal fluid flow. If left untreated, they may cause hydrocephalus or, in severe cases, even sudden death. The objective of this approach is to provide a safe and effective alternative to traditional microsurgical methods. It does so by reducing postoperative pain, surgical morbidity, and hospital stays. The protocol delineates meticulous preoperative preparations, encompassing patient posi

The pathologies of the neck are varied and at times may cause a diagnostic dilemma for the pathologist. In this report, we present a case of a 32-year-old man with a slow-growing nodular swelling in the right neck region, which was diagnosed as a simple colloid cyst arising in a parasitic thyroid nodule. Simple colloid cysts are cysts that develop due to impaired accumulation of thyroglobulin in inactive follicles. Most thyroid-related pathologies occur as midline swellings. However, the present case was unique due to its location with no connection to the thyroid gland. This case report descr

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are rare intracerebral lesions that are preferentially encountered within the third ventricle. There are only a few reports in which colloid cysts are described in other locations such as the fourth ventricle, brainstem, cerebellum, and suprasellar region.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A young woman presented with headaches for 1 year and an episode of generalized tonic, clonic seizures 1 week ago. She had bitemporal visual field cuts on examination. Imaging showed an hyperdense suprasellar lesion that was isointense on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imagings, profoundly hypoint

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial neoplasms. However, its incidence will increase with increased use of CT scan and MRI. The symptomatology is principally acute or chronic hydrocephalus obstructing the foramen of Monro, and the origin of this cyst is controversial, neuroepithelial or endodermal. We report a case of colloid cyst of the third ventricle, associated with cavum veli interpositi. The patient, a 46-years-old female, had suffered from headache, ataxic gait and tremor lasting 6 months. CT scan and homogenous high signal inten

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign and rare tumors of the brain. The growth rates of these tumors are unpredictable. These cysts can increase in size and obstruct the cerebrospinal fluid pathways producing obstructive hydrocephalus. Consequently, this can manifest as acute severe headaches followed by deterioration in consciousness, or even sudden death in patients. Such remarkable episodes occurring in patients during air travel have been reported sparsely in the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this report, we narrate the ordeal of a patient who had severe headache followed by loss of con

Colloid cysts are usually located in third ventricle and are believed to be derived from either primitive neuroepithelium or endoderm. Patients may remain asymptomatic for long time while some can present with paroxysmal headache, gait disturbance, nausea, vomiting, behavioral changes, weaknesses of lower limbs, impaired memory, new learning disability and sudden death. Computed tomography usually reveals a well-defined round or oval nonenhancing lesion. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal intensity of colloid cysts is variable, the most common appearance is hyperintensity in T1-w
