Within-Host Evolution of Simian Arteriviruses in Crab-Eating Macaques.

UNLABELLED: Simian arteriviruses are a diverse clade of viruses infecting captive and wild nonhuman primates. We recently reported that Kibale red colobus virus 1 (KRCV-1) causes a mild and self-limiting disease in experimentally infected crab-eating macaques, while simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) causes lethal viral hemorrhagic fever. Here we characterize how these viruses evolved during replication in cell culture and in experimentally infected macaques. During passage in cell culture, 68 substitutions that were localized in open reading frames (ORFs) likely associated with host cell e

Topography of cranial foramina and anaesthesia techniques of cranial nerves in selected species of primates (Cebidae, Cercopithecidae, Lemuridae) - part I - osteology.

BACKGROUND: Conductive anaesthesia of the nerves around the head is one of the methods of intraoperative pain relief (under deep anaesthesia but before proceeding with the procedure). Performing this procedure on primates is especially challenging for the veterinarian, due to their cranial anatomy and topography, which has more in common with the human skull than with the skulls of other animals. Knowledge of key bony structures, including cranial foramina, is essential for effective anaesthesia of the cranial nerves. RESULTS: In this study, the differences in the topography of the cranial fo

NSD1 gene evolves under episodic selection within primates and mutations of specific exons in humans cause Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Modern human brains and skull shapes differ from other hominids. Brain growth disorders as micro- (ASPM, MCPH1) and macrocephaly (NFIX, GLI3) have been highlighted as relevant for the evolution in humans due to the impact in early brain development. Genes associated with macrocephaly have been reported to cause this change, for example NSD1 which causes Sotos syndrome. RESULTS: In this study we performed a systematic literature review, located the reported variants associated to Sotos syndrome along the gene domains, compared the sequences with close primates, calculated their sim

Profiles of a pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica-like variant with variations in the nucleotide sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA isolated from a primate (De Brazza's guenon).

A pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica-like variant (JSK2004) with genetic variations and a novel isoenzyme pattern was isolated from a De Brazza's guenon. A homology of 99.1% was found between the clones of E. histolytica (HM-1:IMSS) and JSK2004 in the 1,893 nucleotide bases of the small subunit rRNA (SSU-rRNA) gene. The DNA of the pathogenic amoeba species was also extracted from two sterile liver abscesses during the autopsies of an Abyssinian colobus and a Geoffroy's spider monkey occurring in the same institution in which JSK2004 was isolated, and the homology of the nucleotide sequences in t

Searching for the forest ghosts: group counts and polyspecific associations of the endangered Rungwecebus kipunji in the Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania.

The IUCN-Endangered kipunji (Rungwecebus kipunji) is one of Africa's rarest primates, restricted to two isolated populations in Tanzania. The Udzungwa population is enigmatic, confined to a small area within a large, old-growth forest and consists of fewer than 100 individuals. Apart from baseline data from 2006, ecological knowledge remains scant. We present new data from three standardized sweep censuses conducted between 2013 and 2024 in Ndundulu forest along 42-45 linear transects of 2 km in length. Per census, only 4 to 6 kipunji groups were recorded, within a range of 10.42 km2 which inc

Entamoebiasis in zoological non-human primates in the United Kingdom.

Entamoebiasis is a significant disease in non-human primates (NHPs), causing a spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe, necrotizing colitis and life-threatening extraintestinal dissemination. This study examined entamoebiasis in captive NHPs across nine zoological collections from 2004 to 2020. A total of 28 cases, spanning nine Old World (OW) and four New World (NW) primate species, were confirmed via histopathology and Entamoeba histolytica immunohistochemistry. Entamoebiasis caused intra- and extraintestinal disease, including necrotizing colitis and

A survey of amoebic infections and differentiation of an Entamoeba histolytica-like variant (JSK2004) in nonhuman primates by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction.

A pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica-like variant (JSK2004 strain) with genetic variations and a novel isoenzyme pattern isolated from a De Brazza's guenon in a Tokyo zoo in Japan has previously been documented. In this study, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay that could distinguish the JSK2004-type E. histolytica-like variant (JSK04-Eh-V) from E. histolytica and Entamoeba dispar using three newly designed primer sets for amplifying each specific DNA fragment from their small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes was developed and established. Dental eruption sequence among colobine primates.

Dental development is one aspect of growth that is linked to diet and to life history but has not been investigated among colobines since the work of Schultz [1935]. This study establishes the dental eruption sequence for several colobine species and compares it to that of other catarrhines. The mandibles and maxillae of two hundred and four juvenile colobine specimens were scored for presence or absence of permanent teeth and for stages of partial eruption. Eruption was defined as ranging between tooth emergence (any part of a tooth crown above the alveolar margin) and full occlusion, with th

Direct human papillomavirus (HPV) sequencing method yields a novel HPV in a human immunodeficiency virus-positive Quebec woman and distinguishes a new HPV clade.

Papillomaviruses of supergroup A exhibit genital tropism and are best known as etiologic agents for benign and malignant cervical lesions in women. A polymerase chain reaction direct sequencing approach with P-33-labeled dideoxynucleotides was used to detect and type human papillomaviruses (HPVs) in cervical biopsies. A novel sequence was found in condylomatous specimens from a human immunodeficiency virus-positive French Canadian woman. The viral gene L1 was sequenced completely, yielding a novel HPV type of supergroup A, named JC9710. This is related to a previously described HPV type from N

Differentiation of Trichuris species eggs from non-human primates by geometric morphometric analysis.

Human trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease which affects millions of people worldwide, mostly living in low socio-economic conditions. Numerous studies have been conducted over the past 10 years to compare the different techniques for T. trichiura eggs detection. Our study provides the first geometric morphometric analysis for the specific detection of eggs of Trichuris sp. isolated from stools of macaque (M. sylvanus), colobus (C. g. kikuyensis), grivets (C. aethiops) and the Brazza's monkey (C. neglectus) from zoos in Spain. Novel simian foamy virus infections from multiple monkey species in women from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic transmission of simian retroviruses in Central Africa is ongoing and can result in pandemic human infection. While simian foamy virus (SFV) infection was reported in primate hunters in Cameroon and Gabon, little is known about the distribution of SFV in Africa and whether human-to-human transmission and disease occur. We screened 3,334 plasmas from persons living in rural villages in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) using SFV-specific EIA and Western blot (WB) tests. PCR amplification of SFV polymerase sequences from DNA extracted from buffy coats was used to mea

Molecular Characterization of Complete Simian Foamy Virus Genomes from Three Colobine Monkeys Reveals Highly Divergent Evolutionary Trajectories and Identifies Transmission to Humans.

Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) are ancient retroviruses that co-evolve with nonhuman primates (NHPs), although genomic data from Asian and African monkeys are limited. We report the characterization of three new SFV colobine genomes from two Asian species (Trachypithecus francoisi (Tfr) and Pygathrix nemaeus (Pne)) and one African monkey (Colobus guereza, Cgu), obtained via metagenomics analysis of peripheral blood leukocyte tissue culture isolates. Genomic analyses found conserved structural, enzymatic, and auxiliary genes flanked by long terminal repeats, with all major transcriptional and stru

Poxvirus in West African nonhuman primates: serological survey results.

Ten species of nonhuman primates in West African habitat were analysed for variolavaccinia subgroup haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and neutralization antibodies. The animals were taken in 27 different sampling zones in parts of the Ivory Coast, Mali, and Upper Volta. Of the 195 tested, 15 (8%) had elevated HI antibodies after nonspecific reactions were reduced with potassium periodate pretreatment. Positive neutralization antibodies were found in 21% (44 of 206). Antibodies were detected in serum from monkeys living near two areas where monkeypox cases in humans had occurred. Four samples w

Full-field characterization of wishboning strain in the colobine mandibular symphysis.

The masticatory loading regime of lateral transverse bending (wishboning) is hypothesized to be instrumental in the evolution of symphyseal form among primates. The biomechanics of wishboning have largely been inferred by assuming that the mandible behaves as a curved beam under this load; however, the characterization of stress and strain in the anthropoid symphysis has been interpretively challenging. This is due, in part, to both limitations of sampling strain in an in vivo context and the incongruence of beam theory assumptions on the one hand, and the anatomical complexity of mandibular m

Variation of thoracolumbar vertebral morphology in anthropoid primates.

OBJECTIVES: Morphological variation among extant primates in the lumbar vertebral column is well studied. However, knowledge concerning the thoracic spine, an important region responsible for supporting and facilitating movement in the upper trunk, remains relatively scarce. Consequently, our comprehension of the functional differentiation exhibited throughout the thoracolumbar vertebral column among various primate species remains constrained. In this study, we examined patterns of morphological variation in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of extant hominoids, cercopithecoids, and Ateles.

Modern-day SIV viral diversity generated by extensive recombination and cross-species transmission.

Cross-species transmission (CST) has led to many devastating epidemics, but is still a poorly understood phenomenon. HIV-1 and HIV-2 (human immunodeficiency virus 1 and 2), which have collectively caused over 35 million deaths, are the result of multiple CSTs from chimpanzees, gorillas, and sooty mangabeys. While the immediate history of HIV is known, there are over 45 lentiviruses that infect specific species of primates, and patterns of host switching are not well characterized. We thus took a phylogenetic approach to better understand the natural history of SIV recombination and CST. We mod

Cytomegaloviruses in a Community of Wild Nonhuman Primates in Taï National Park, Côte D'Ivoire.

Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) are known to infect many mammals, including a number of nonhuman primates (NHPs). However, most data available arose from studies led on captive individuals and little is known about CMV diversity in wild NHPs. Here, we analyzed a community of wild nonhuman primates (seven species) in Taï National Park (TNP), Côte d'Ivoire, with two PCR systems targeting betaherpesviruses. CMV DNA was detected in 17/87 primates (4/7 species). Six novel CMVs were identified in sooty mangabeys, Campbell's monkeys and Diana monkeys, respectively. In 3/17 positive individuals (from three N
