First reported case of thrombocytopenia from a Heterodon nasicus envenomation.

CONTEXT: The vast majority of the 2.5 million annual worldwide venomous snakebites are attributed to Viperidae or Elapidae envenomations. Of the nearly 2000 Colubridae species described, only a handful are known to cause medically significant envenomations. Considered medically insignificant, Heterodon nasicus (Western Hognose Snake) is a North American rear-fanged colubrid common in the legal pet trading industry. Previously reported cases of envenomations describe local pain, swelling, edema, and blistering. However, there are no reported cases of systemic or hematologic toxicity. CASE DETA

A Key to Identify the Snakes of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, along with Notes on Geographical Records.

The unequivocal identification of species helps us understand and organize life and assess the humanmediated impacts on biodiversity, allowing for an easier way to communicate biological information. However, identifying vertebrates at the species level is sometimes tricky for several reasons; therefore, compiled information and illustrative tools may help tackle this challenge. Even with questionable records, amounting to about 89 species, the state of Rio de Janeiro boasts a rich ophidiofauna with similar species in external morphology, many of which are only known from a few specimens and b

An integrative view of the toxic potential of Conophis lineatus (Dipsadidae: Xenodontinae), a medically relevant rear-fanged snake.

Most traditional research on snake venoms has focused on front-fanged snake families (Viperidae, Elapidae, and Atractaspididae). However, venom is now generally accepted as being a much more broadly possessed trait within snakes, including species traditionally considered harmless. Unfortunately, due to historical inertia and methodological challenges, the toxin repertoires of non-front-fanged snake families (e.g., Colubridae, Dipsadidae, and Natricidae) have been heavily neglected despite the knowledge of numerous species capable of inflicting medically relevant envenomations. Integrating pro

Quantitative axial myology in two constricting snakes: Lampropeltis holbrooki and Pantherophis obsoletus.

A snake's body represents an extreme degree of elongation with immense muscle complexity. Snakes have approximately 25 different muscles on each side of the body at each vertebra. These muscles serially repeat, overlap, interconnect, and rarely insert parallel to the vertebral column. The angled muscles mean that simple measurements of anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA, perpendicular to the long-axis of the body) serve only as proxies for the primary determinant of muscle force, physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA, area perpendicular to the muscle fibers). Here, I describe and quantif

Snake Venom PLA2, a Promising Target for Broad-Spectrum Antivenom Drug Development.

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected global health problem, causing substantial mortality, disability, and psychological morbidity, especially in rural tropical and subtropical zones. Antivenin is currently the only specific medicine for envenomation. However, it is restricted by cold storage, snakebite diagnosis, and high price. Snake venom phospholipase A2s (svPLA2s) are found in all kinds of venomous snake families (e.g., Viperidae, Elapidae, and Colubridae). Along with their catalytic activity, svPLA2s elicit a wide variety of pharmacological effects that play a pivotal role in envenomati

Road Guarder (Conophis lineatus concolor: Dipsadidae): Case documentation of a clinically significant envenoming.

Detailed cases of envenoming by a non-front-fanged snake (NFFS) from North, Central, and South America have had limited representation in the toxicology and toxinology literature. The NFFS, Conophis lineatus, has been reported to deliver bites that resulted in moderately severe envenoming. However, most of these reported cases have been via personal communication, or self-reported and lacking in detailed medical evaluations. Reported here is a case of an amateur naturalist who was traveling in Mexico and was envenomed following extensive protracted bites to both hands from a wild Conophis line

Ophidiomycosis in Red Cornsnakes (Pantherophis guttatus): Potential Roles of Brumation and Temperature on Pathogenesis and Transmission.

Ophidiomycosis (snake fungal disease) is caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola. As ophidiomycosis is difficult to study in free-ranging snakes, a reliable experimental model is needed to investigate transmission, pathogenesis, morbidity, and mortality, and the effects of brumation and temperature on disease development. Our objective was to develop such a model via subcutaneous injection of O. ophiodiicola conidia in red cornsnakes (Pantherophis guttatus). The model was used to evaluate transmission and the effects of brumation and temperature in co-housed inoculated and noninoculated

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF OPHIDIOMYCOSIS IN LAKE ERIE WATERSNAKES (NERODIA SIPEDON INSULARUM).

Ophidiomycosis, caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, is an infectious disease of wild and managed snakes worldwide. Lake Erie watersnakes (LEWS; Nerodia sipedon insularum) were listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act from 1999 to 2011 and were first diagnosed with ophidiomycosis in 2009. Our objective was to characterize the epidemiology of ophidiomycosis in LEWS. We hypothesized that the prevalence of skin lesions, O. ophidiicola DNA, and ophidiomycosis disease categories would show spatial and temporal variation and clustering, with higher prevalence at sites with

[Neurotoxins from snake venom].

Many snakes are able to quickly immobilize prey, thanks to their venom neurotoxins. Most of these snakes belong to families Elapidae or Hydrophidae but neurotoxins were also isolated from families Viperidae and Colubridae. Ophidian neurotoxins can be classified into several categories: neurotoxins which inhibit synaptic transmission (postsynaptic and presynaptic neurotoxins) and neurotoxins which facilitate it excessively (dendrotoxin and fasciculin). Their toxicity is dose-dependent, and venom effects are extremely fast. The clinical feature is a potentially fatal neurological syndrome, the s

Biochemical and proteomic profiling reveals potent proteolytic activity in the venom of Erythrolamprus melanotus (Shaw's dark ground snake, Xenodontini).

We describe here the Duvernoy's venom gland organization and biochemical and proteomic analyses of venom from the Colombian colubrid snake Erythrolamprus melanotus. Histological analysis indicated a serous venom gland distinct from the mucous supralabial gland. SDS-PAGE of the venom revealed >15 bands (∼15 kDa-∼200 kDa) and gelatin zymography revealed potent proteolytic activity; zymographic activity towards casein was considerably less. RP-HPLC yielded 16 peaks, several of which contained proteases, as assessed by gelatin zymography. Enzymatic assays using azocasein, azocoll and hide powder a

An albino mutant of the Japanese rat snake (Elaphe climacophora) carries a nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene.

The Japanese rat snake (Elaphe climacophora) is a common species in Japan and is widely distributed across the Japanese islands. An albino mutant of the Japanese rat snake ("pet trade" albino) has been bred and traded by hobbyists for around two decades because of its remarkable light-yellowish coloration with red eyes, attributable to a lack of melanin. Another albino Japanese rat snake mutant found in a natural population of the Japanese rat snake at high frequency in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture is known as "Iwakuni no Shirohebi". It has been conserved by the government as a natural m

Skin structure, coloration, and habitat utilization in typical and melanistic morphs of the grass snake (Natrix natrix).

Melanism is a polymorphic phenotype caused by the number and density of melanocyte cells producing melanin pigment in the skin and widely observed in snakes. The frequency of this coloration in populations is associated with its opposing fitness consequences and can be closely related to species-specific characteristics such as sex, reproduction, and nutrition, as well as environmental factors such as climate and geography. Although melanism is frequently seen in snakes, the skin structure of melanistic individuals has not been studied in detail. Also, the impact of the black phenotype on habi

Development of the duct system during exocrine pancreas differentiation in the grass snake Natrix natrix (Lepidosauria, Serpentes).

We analyzed the development of the pancreatic ducts in grass snake Natrix natrix L. embryos with special focus on the three-dimensional (3D)-structure of the duct network, ultrastructural differentiation of ducts with attention to cell types and lumen formation. Our results indicated that the system of ducts in the embryonic pancreas of the grass snake can be divided into extralobular, intralobular, and intercalated ducts, similarly as in other vertebrate species. However, the pattern of branching was different from that in other vertebrates, which was related to the specific topography of the

Synergistic effects of musking and autohaemorrhaging on the duration of death feigning in dice snakes (Natrix tessellata).

Predation exerts a significant selection pressure on prey, shaping a multitude of traits that serve as antipredator defences. In turn, natural selection could favour combinations of antipredator defences with synergistic effects that enhance prey survival. An especially interesting antipredator defence is death feigning (DF), present in a wide variety of taxa and usually characterized by the prey lying motionless often along with defaecation, musking and autohaemorrhaging (AH). All these aspects of the DF display should work in conjunction with one another, intensifying the overall effect of t

Comparative morphology of oral glands in snakes of the family Homalopsidae reveals substantial variation and additional independent origins of salt glands within Serpentes.

Using diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT), we examined the morphology of the oral glands of 12 species of the family Homalopsidae. Snakes of this family exhibit substantial interspecific morphological variation in their oral glands. Particular variables are the venom glands, ranging from large (e.g., Subsessor bocourti) to small (e.g., Erpeton tentaculatum). The supra- and infralabial glands are more uniform in morphology, being the second most developed in almost all the sampled species. Premaxillary glands distinct from the supralabial glands were observed
