Gene sequencing applications to combat oral-cavity related disorders: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

Gene sequencing (GS) has numerous applications in combatting oral-cavity related disorders, including identifying genetic risk factors for diseases, developing targeted therapies, and improving diagnostic methods. It can help identify specific genetic mutations or variations that increase the risk of developing oral-cavity related disorders, such as oral cancer, periodontal disease, and cleft lip and palate. By the means of the following investigation, our primary objective was to assess the impact of GS technique in diagnosing and potentially treating diseases of the oral cavity by the means

Targeting TRP Channels - Valuable Alternatives to Combat Pain, Lower Urinary Tract Disorders, and Type 2 Diabetes?

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are a family of functionally diverse and widely expressed cation channels involved in a variety of cell signaling and sensory pathways. Research in the last two decades has not only shed light on the physiological roles of the 28 mammalian TRP channels, but also revealed the involvement of specific TRP channels in a plethora of inherited and acquired human diseases. Considering the historical successes of other types of ion channels as therapeutic drug targets, small molecules that target specific TRP channels hold promise as treatments for a variety

Combatting Stigma Toward Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders: The Role of Nostalgia.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited evidence on how to tackle stigma toward individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD). This study addressed this issue by examining how nostalgia (a sentimental longing for a personally experienced past) for experiences involving people with ADRD can be used to harness more positive attitudes and behavioral tendencies. METHOD: One hundred student nurses were randomly assigned to either recall a nostalgic or (in the control condition) an ordinary interaction involving a person with ADRD, before completing questionnaire measures of inclusion of

Discovery of powerful multifaceted antioxidant for combating oxidative stress associated with neurodegenerative disorders.

Amidst the tangled web of neurons, antioxidants stand as silent sentinels, shielding the delicate threads from the raging storm of oxidative stress in the realm of neurological affliction. Herein, we showcased an innovative design strategy to develop a novel powerful antioxidant small molecule (AOX), designed with the synergistic integration of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), gallic acid, and coupled with the metal-chelating capabilities of 8-hydroxy quinoline functional moieties that exhibit multifunctional activity in combating oxidative stress via activating the anti-oxidative, anti-apopto

The effects of intelligence on exposure to combat and posttraumatic stress disorder across multiple deployments.

INTRODUCTION: Past work relates intelligence quotient (IQ) to risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among soldiers. We gathered data over multiple deployments to assess how IQ relates to the rate of symptom development both directly and through increasing the risk for traumatic combat exposure. METHODS: Male infantry soldiers from a maneuver brigade (N = 582) were followed over the 3-year period of their mandatory military service. Data were collected at 3-time-points: 1) shortly after enlistment and before deployment; 2) about 15 months into the service following one deployment, and

Neurophysiology of threat processing bias in combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition that may develop after experiencing a traumatic event. Combat exposure increases an individual's chance of developing PTSD, making veterans especially susceptible to the disorder. PTSD is characterized by dysregulated emotional networks, memory deficits, and a hyperattentive response to perceived threatening stimuli. Recently, there have been a number of imaging studies that show structural and functional abnormalities associated with PTSD; however, there have been few studies utilizing electroencephalography (EEG). The goal of

Predeployment predictors of psychiatric disorder-symptoms and interpersonal violence during combat deployment.

BACKGROUND: Preventing suicides, mental disorders, and noncombat-related interpersonal violence during deployment are priorities of the US Army. We used predeployment survey and administrative data to develop actuarial models to identify soldiers at high risk of these outcomes during combat deployment. METHODS: The models were developed in the Army Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Servicemembers (Army STARRS) Pre-Post Deployment Study, a panel study of soldiers deployed to Afghanistan in 2012-2013. Soldiers completed self-administered questionnaires before deployment and one (T1), three

Overgeneralized autobiographical memory and future thinking in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) tend to recall autobiographical memories with decreased episodic specificity. A growing body of research has demonstrated that the mechanisms involved in recalling autobiographical memories overlap considerably with those involved in imagining the future. Although shared autobiographical deficits in remembering the past and imagining the future have been observed in other clinical populations, this has yet to be examined in PTSD. This study examined whether, compared to combat trauma-exposed individuals without

Morphine use after combat injury in Iraq and post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common adverse mental health outcome among seriously injured civilians and military personnel who are survivors of trauma. Pharmacotherapy in the aftermath of serious physical injury or exposure to traumatic events may be effective for the secondary prevention of PTSD. METHODS: We identified 696 injured U.S. military personnel without serious traumatic brain injury from the Navy-Marine Corps Combat Trauma Registry Expeditionary Medical Encounter Database. Complete data on medications administered were available for all personnel selected.

FLI1 in PBMCs contributes to elevated inflammation in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition with significant public health implications that arise following exposure to traumatic events. Recent studies highlight the involvement of immune dysregulation in PTSD, characterized by elevated inflammatory markers. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this immune imbalance remain unclear. Previous research has implicated friend leukemia virus integration 1 (FLI1), an erythroblast transformation-specific (ETS) transcription factor, in inflammatory responses in sepsis and Alzheimer's disease. Elevated FLI1 leve

Interpretations of ambiguous situations in combat veterans with and without post-traumatic stress disorder.

Deployed combat personnel are at increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People with PTSD often judge ambiguous information as negative or threatening (interpretation bias). However, this may be adaptive during deployment. The current study aimed to investigate the extent to which interpretation bias in combat personnel is associated with PTSD symptoms, rather than with appropriate situational awareness. Combat veterans with and without PTSD and civilians without PTSD generated explanations for ambiguous situations and judged the likelihood of various possible explanations. Th

Herbal Resources to Combat a Progressive & Degenerative Nervous System Disorder- Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common adult-onset, a chronic disorder involving neurodegeneration, which progressively leads to deprivation of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra, causing a subsequent reduction of dopamine levels in the striatum resulting in tremor, myotonia, and dyskinesia. Genetics and environmental factors are believed to be responsible for the onset of Parkinson's disease. The exact pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease is quite complicated and the present anti-Parkinson's disease treatments appear to be clinically insufficient. Comprehensive researches have dem

Design and screening of ASIC inhibitors based on aromatic diamidines for combating neurological disorders.

Acid sensing ion channels (ASICs) are implicated in various brain functions including learning and memory and are involved in a number of neurological disorders such as pain, ischemic stroke, depression, and multiple sclerosis. We have recently defined ASICs as one of receptor targets of aromatic diamidines in neurons. Aromatic diamidines are DNA-binding agents and have long been used in the treatment of leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, pneumocystis pneumonia and babesiosis. Moreover, some aromatic diamidines are used as skin-care and baby products and others have potential to suppress tumor gr

Clonazepam for treatment of sleep disturbances associated with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Clonazepam is widely used for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related sleep disturbances despite very limited published data supporting its use for this indication. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a pilot-controlled trial to provide more data on this clinical practice and lay the foundation for more definitive studies. METHODS: The study was designed as a randomized, single-blind (ie, patient only), placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial involving administration of clonazepam 1 mg at bedtime for one week followed by 2 mg at bedtime for one week. Multivariate assessment of explicit memory function in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

Declarative memory impairment is a frequent complaint of patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We assessed memory, attention, visual spatial skills, and executive function in Vietnam combat veterans with (n = 19) and without (n = 13) PTSD. Although PTSD subjects demonstrated a "generalized impairment" relative to non-PTSD subjects on a majority of tasks, only attention and memory provided unique and independent prediction of PTSD versus non-PTSD status. Our findings suggest that memory functioning represents a neurocognitive domain of specific relevance to the developme

Symptom structure and psychiatric comorbidity of combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

The placement of the diagnostic category of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among anxiety disorders reflects the recognition that anxiety is a predominant reaction to trauma. Indeed, the symptoms of PTSD overlap considerably with those of other anxiety disorders. The nosological criteria render PTSD as quite a heterogeneous diagnosis. Two individuals with no common symptoms can be diagnosed as having PTSD. In this report we provide information on the phenomenology and psychiatric comorbidity in a sample of 33 patients with combat-related PTSD. The finding of clinical heterogeneity in sub

Senolytics as Modulators of Critical Signaling Pathways: a Promising Strategy to Combat Brain Aging and Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Aging of the brain, an intricate process, is a significant risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs), such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Senescent cell accumulation is an important hallmark of brain aging. These cells resist apoptotic cell death, produce proinflammatory cytokines, increase oxidative stress, and store toxic proteins that exacerbate neurodegeneration. These senescent cells cause neuroinflammation and dysfunction of the neuronal microenvironment by transmitting senescent phenotypes to neighboring healthy cells. Senolytics have become a viable treatment
