BACKGROUND & AIMS: Isolated lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxation associated with belching and vomiting and the transient LES relaxation associated with gastroesophageal reflux are gastric afferent-mediated vagovagal reflexes. We aimed to identify the brain stem vagal subnuclei involved in these reflexes.
METHODS: In anesthetized mice, LES pressures were recorded using a manometric technique and response to electrical stimulation of the ventral trunk of subdiaphragmatic vagus was investigated. Anatomy of the vagal subnuclei was defined, and activated subnuclei with ventral subdiaphragma

The pyloric circuit (14 neurones) in the stomatogastric ganglion of crustacea (Jasus, Homarus) is the central pattern generator of the motor output which governs the rhythmic movements of the pyloric chamber (Fig. 1). Although the intrinsic burstiness of these neurones plays a crucial role in the generation of the rhythmic output, it is demonstrated here that expression of this burstiness is completely dependent on extrinsic inputs (Fig. 2). Tonic firing of an identified interneurons (APM) projecting to the pyloric circuit is able to induce bursting in pyloric neurones. It also modifies the ch

Mossy cells (MCs) represent a major population of excitatory neurons in the adult dentate gyrus, a brain region where new neurons are generated from radial neural stem cells (rNSCs) throughout life. Little is known about the role of MCs in regulating rNSCs. Here we demonstrate that MC commissural projections structurally and functionally interact with rNSCs through both the direct glutamatergic MC-rNSC pathway and the indirect GABAergic MC-local interneuron-rNSC pathway. Specifically, moderate MC activation increases rNSC quiescence through the dominant indirect pathway, while high MC activati

Terrestrial snails have a highly developed sense of olfaction. Because the procerebrum has a large number of cells and is located at the entry site of the olfactory nerve into the brain, the structure is thought to have a significant role in the processing of olfactory stimuli. The morphology of the procerebral neurons in the snail Helix aspersa was investigated through intracellular injections of biocytin. No formal categorization of neuronal types was possible, but some cells were seen to have neurites entirely intrinsic to the procerebrum, whereas others had both intrinsic and extrinsic arb

We provide a detailed and exhaustive description of forebrain regions, nuclei, and neuronal populations which express the LIM-homeodomain transcription factor Islet1 during Xenopus development. To this end, Isl1 immunofluorescence staining was combined with other regional or neuronal markers such as Nkx2.1, Pax6, GABA, nitric oxide synthase, tyrosine hydroxylase or calretinin, and with tract tracing experiments to differentiate projection neurons from interneurons. We interpret and discuss the results with regard to the developmental origin of some previously "ambiguous" nuclei of the septum a

The monoaminergic input to spinal segment 10 of the frog, Rana pipiens, was investigated anatomically. Fluorescence histochemistry demonstrated a diffuse and overlapping distribution of catecholamine (CA) and indoleamine (IA) containing terminals within the spinal cord. Terminal fields containing high numbers of CA and IA varicosities included the marginal plexus and the anterior commissural region. IA terminals were also abundant in the dorsal portion of the dorsal horn, while CA terminals were found in high number in the ventral part of the dorsal horn. IA varicosities were regularly observe

The distribution of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the rat brain and spinal cord was investigated by means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase procedure of Sternberger using a rabbit anti-neuropeptide Y serum. A widespread distribution of immunostained cells and fibres was detected with moderate to large numbers of cells in the following regions: olfactory bulb, anterior olfactory nucleus, olfactory tubercle, striatum, nucleus accumbens, all parts of the neocortex and the corpus callosum, septum including the anterior hippocampal rudiment, ventral pallidum, horizontal limb of the diagona

The photosensory pineal complex of anurans comprises an extracranial part, the frontal organ, and an intracranial part, the pineal organ proper. Although the pineal organ functions mainly as a luminosity detector, the frontal organ may monitor the relative proportions of short and intermediate/long wavelengths in the ambient illumination. The major pathway of information processing in the pineal and frontal organs is the photoreceptor to ganglion cell synapse. It is not known whether interneurons form part of the neural circuitry. In the present study, we demonstrate GABA-immunoreactive (GABA-

Locomotion and scratching are basic motor functions which are critically important for animal survival. Although the spinal circuits governing forward locomotion have been extensively investigated, the organization of spinal circuits and neural mechanisms regulating backward locomotion and scratching remain unclear. Here, we extend a model by Danner et al. to propose a spinal circuit model with asymmetrical cervical-lumbar layout to investigate these issues. In the model, the left-right alternation within the cervical and lumbar circuits is mediated by V 0D and V 0V commissural interneurons (C

In non-human primates, striatal tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive (TH-ir) cells are increased in number after dopamine depletion and in response to trophic factor delivery. As carotid body cells contain the dopaminotrophic glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), we evaluated the number, morphology and neurochemistry of these TH-ir cells, in the anterior and posterior striatum of five monkeys treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) which received a graft of carotid body cell aggregates (CBCA) (n = 3) or sham surgery (n = 2), and six MPTP-monkeys that were

Vestibulospinal pathways activate contralateral motoneurons (MNs) in the thoracolumbar spinal cord of the neonatal mouse exclusively via axons descending ipsilaterally from the vestibular nuclei via the lateral vestibulospinal tract (LVST; Kasumacic et al., 2010). Here we investigate how transmission from the LVST to contralateral MNs is mediated by descending commissural interneurons (dCINs) in different spinal segments. We test the polysynaptic nature of this crossed projection by assessing LVST-mediated ventral root (VR) response latencies, manipulating synaptic responses pharmacologically,

In rats anaesthetized with either urethane, pentobarbital or fluothane the effects of acetylcholine, cholinergic agonists and antagonists (applied by iontophoresis) were studied on single cortical neurons of first somatosensory region. The laminar distribution of the neurons excited by acetylcholine was determined by the reconstruction of each electrode track based on a dye-deposit made at the last recording site. Neurons were identified using antidromic stimulation of the pyramidal tract, the ventrobasal thalamus and the corpus callosum. Neurons excited by acetylcholine could be segregated in

Although stimulation of cutaneous limb afferents has been shown to evoke crossed extension reflexes in unanaesthetised decerebrate or spinalised animals, here we show that stimulation of cutaneous nerves evokes crossed inhibition rather than excitation of contralateral extensor motoneurones in anaesthetised, spinal cord intact cats. Single pulse stimuli delivered to the saphenous, sural or superficial peroneal nerves evoked IPSPs in a high proportion of contralateral motoneurones including those of knee and ankle extensors. These IPSPs had thresholds of less than 1.5 times the threshold of the

Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole insecticide designed to selectively inhibit insect gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. Although fipronil is often used in or near aquatic environments, few studies have assessed the effects of this neurotoxicant on aquatic vertebrates at sensitive life stages. We explored the toxicological effects of fipronil on embryos and larvae using the zebrafish (Danio rerio) experimental model system. Embryos exposed to fipronil at nominal concentrations at or above 0.7 microM (333 mug/l) displayed notochord degeneration, shortening along the rostral-caudal body axis, a

The development of GABAergic neurons in the spinal cord of the rat has been investigated by immunocytochemical staining of frozen sections with anti-gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antiserum. In the cervical cord, GABA-immunoreactive fibers first appeared at embryonic day (E) 13 in the presumptive white matter within the ventral commissure, ventral funiculus, and dorsal root entrance zone, and in the ventral roots. There were no GABA-immunoreactive cell bodies detected at this age. By E14, motoneurons, the earliest generated spinal cells, were the first cell population to become GABA-immunoreac

To assess the position of interneurons in the hippocampal network, fast spiking cells were recorded intracellularly in vitro and filled with biocytin. Sixteen non-principal cells were selected on the basis of 1) cell bodies located in the pyramidal layer and in the middle of the slice, 2) extensive labeling of their axons, and 3) a branching pattern of the axon indicating that they were not axo-axonic cells. Examination of their efferent synapses (n = 400) demonstrated that the cells made synapses on cell bodies, dendritic shafts, spines, and axon initial segments (AIS). Statistical analysis o

Johnston's organ (Jo) acts as an antennal wind-sensitive and/or auditory organ across a spectrum of insect species and its axons universally project to the brain. In the locust, this pathway is already present at mid-embryogenesis but the process of fasciculation involved in its construction has not been investigated. Terminal projections into the fine neuropilar organization of the brain also remain unresolved, information essential not only for understanding the neural circuitry mediating Jo-mediated behavior but also for providing comparative data offering insights into its evolution. We have studied the expression pattern of two cell adhesion proteins of the immunoglobin (Ig) superfamily, BEN/SC1/DM-GRASP (BEN) and the transient axonal glycoprotein TAG-1, during the development of the human nervous system. This study was performed by immunocytochemistry on sections of human embryos ranging from 4 to 13 weeks postconception. The overall distribution of the two proteins during development is very similar to that reported in other vertebrate species, but several important differences have been observed. Both proteins exhibit a transient expression on selected neuronal populat

Interactions among rhythmically active neuronal circuits that oscillate at different frequencies are important for generating complex behaviors, yet little is known about the underlying cellular mechanisms. We addressed this issue in the crab stomatogastric ganglion (STG), which contains two distinct but interacting circuits. These circuits generate the gastric mill rhythm (cycle period, approximately 10 sec) and the pyloric rhythm (cycle period, approximately 1 sec). When the identified modulatory projection neuron named modulatory commissural neuron 1 (MCN1) is activated, the gastric mill mo

Morphologically the mammalian pineal organ is a part of the diencephalon. It represents a neural tissue histologically ("pineal nervous tissue") and is dissimilar to endocrine glands. Submammalian pinealocytes resemble the photoreceptor cells of the retina, and some of their cytologic characteristics are preserved in the mammalian pinealocytes together with compounds demonstrable by cyto- and immunocytochemistry and participating in photochemical transduction. In our opinion, the main trend of today's literature on pineal functions--only considering the organ as a common endocrine gland--devia
