The Use of Technology for Phone and Face-to-Face Communication After Total Laryngectomy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristics and experiences of individuals who use technology to support telephone or face-to-face communication after total laryngectomy. METHOD: An online questionnaire was used to identify potential participants. Seventeen individuals met inclusion criteria and participated in an in-depth survey. They were compared with a reference group matched for age, gender, and time postsurgery who did not use these technologies. Open-ended responses were summarized. RESULTS: Compared with the matched reference group, individuals who used te

Text-to-speech synthesis as an alternative communication means after total laryngectomy.

AIMS: Total laryngectomy still plays an essential part in the treatment of laryngeal cancer and loss of voice is the most feared consequence of the surgery. Commonly used rehabilitation methods include esophageal voice, electrolarynx, and implantation of voice prosthesis. In this paper we focus on a new perspective of vocal rehabilitation utilizing alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) methods. METHODS AND PATIENTS: 61 consecutive patients treated by means of total laryngectomy with or w/o voice prosthesis implantation were included in the study. All were offered voice banking and

Teachers' and speech-language pathologists' perceptions about a tangible symbols intervention: efficacy, generalization, and recommendations.

Twenty-nine special education teachers (n=21) and speech-language pathologists (n=8) were interviewed about a tangible symbols intervention conducted with 51 children (3-21 years) with multiple disabilities and visual impairment. The intervention, which took place over a 7-month period, addressed the use of tangible symbols in the context of a structured protocol for implementing the daily schedule. These educators reported that students learned the meaning of symbols, exhibited improved behavior, and learned part or all of the daily routine, among other benefits. Supports and barriers to stud

Frequency of Type-1 Berrettini's Connection in a Neurophysiology Laboratory.

Objective  This study aims to estimate the frequency of Berrettini's ulnar-median nerves communication in a neurophysiology laboratory. Materials and Methods  A total of 358 hands belonging to patients, both sexes, median age of 58 years, was studied. Antidromic sensory nerve conduction studies of the ulnar nerves, registered in digits III and IV were performed in search of the ulnar-median communication. A Berrettini's percentage was calculated in each communication: [(amplitude SAP digit III/amplitude SAP digit IV) × 100]. Results  Ulnar-median nerves communication (Berrettini's branch) was

Competency-based education for teaching the concept of communication.

BACKGROUND: Although AACN standards recognize communication as vital for establishing nurse competency, formal educational materials and direction for teaching and assessing communication are lacking. PURPOSE: This article explores current implementation efforts and the development and preliminary testing of a competency-based framework for communication. METHODS: A three-step process was conducted: (a) a national survey of nursing programs on communication implementation; (b) development of competency-based communication learning objectives; and (c) a scaffolded learning approach to teachin

A scoping review of patient-provider communication about weight and weight management among adults with higher body weight.

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review describes the characteristics of studies that were designed to address two research questions: 1) What is the nature of patient-provider communication about weight or weight management among adults, including antecedents and consequences of this communication?; and 2) What are the communication strategies or intervention approaches to improve patient-provider communication about weight or key weight-related behaviors? METHODS: Following the PRISMA-ScR, we searched five databases for peer-reviewed empirical studies published in English between January 1, 1970 (m

Use of a Macro as Nudge Factor in Communication Between Radiologists and Referring Physicians.

INTRODUCTION/METHODS: Radiologists provide value through communication of imaging findings. We outline a quality improvement effort using a dedicated dictation macro as a behavioral nudge to increase direct communication between radiologists and referring physicians. Use of the macro was encouraged by departmental leadership and publicised widely prior to implementation. Monthly data regarding the use of the macro and corresponding departmental volumes were acquired over a 24 month period. RESULTS: Over the 24-month study period, there were 1,334,555 total exams performed and 52,276 total com

Patient-Provider Communication in Spinal Cord Injury: A Scoping Review and Call for Further Research.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing a spinal cord injury (SCI) entails profound biopsychosocial challenges. In this context, patient-provider communication is of critical importance. Yet, the unique complexities of SCI make effective communication particularly difficult. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of existing research on patient-provider communication in SCI, providing insights in the focus, the methodology, and the findings of current research and identifying research gaps. METHODS: The search was conducted on CINAHL, PubMed, PsycInfo, Cochrane, Web of Sci

Usually orthopaedic surgeons are often rated lower in communication skills compared to other specialties. This review examines the role of communication in orthopaedic settings and explores structured strategies to enhance both provider interaction and patient engagement. METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review was conducted using literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The rev

Assessing communication in people with dementia : A scoping review of existing tools.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is associated with progressive cognitive decline. Accompanying communication difficulties can negatively influence well-being and participation; however, individuals can retain meaningful communicative resources when adequately supported. Little is known about communication assessments that are usable across different healthcare professions and that address the full spectrum of communication behavior. This scoping review therefore maps available communication assessment instruments for people with dementia. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and SpeechB

Asking well-built questions for evidence-based practice in augmentative and alternative communication.

UNLABELLED: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is increasingly being advocated as the preferred approach to practice in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The EBP process involves multiple steps. The asking of a well-built question is the first step in the quest for answers. At the same time it is also often the first stumbling block for practitioners. To facilitate the asking of well-built questions it may be helpful to follow a template. The most frequently used template is PICO, which stands for patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome [Richardson, W., Wilson, M., Nishikawa,

Alexithymia in autism: cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with social-communication difficulties, anxiety and depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia (difficulties in identifying and describing emotion) is a transdiagnostic trait implicated in social-emotional and mental health problems in the general population. Many autistic individuals experience significant social-communication difficulties and elevated anxiety/depression and alexithymia. Nevertheless, the role of alexithymia in explaining individual variability in the quality/severity of social-communication difficulties and/or anxiety and depression symptoms in autism remains poorly understood. METHODS: In total, 337 adolescents and adults (autism N = 179) wer

Communication skills competencies: definitions and a teaching toolbox.

BACKGROUND: Doctors' interpersonal and communication skills correlate with improved health care outcomes. International medical organisations require competency in communication skills. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed a toolbox for assessing this competency and 5 others, yet none initially for teaching these skills. PURPOSE AND METHODS: The original focus in the development of the ACGME competencies was evaluation. This paper represents a significant step toward defining methods for teaching communication skills competencies. A total of 16 medical ed
