Social media crisis communication and public engagement during COVID-19 analyzing public health and news media organizations' tweeting strategies.

This study investigates early COVID-19 communication strategies and content of four public health and four news media organizations across Australia, China, the UK, and the US on X (formerly Twitter) and their public engagement. 15,711 COVID-19-related tweets from the selected accounts posted from January 1 to May 19, 2020, were collected using a web crawler. Public engagement was measured through replies, retweets, and likes. The tweets were grouped into 37 clusters using unsupervised learning and analyzed thematically based on the top 30 tweets per cluster. Descriptive statistics quantified

A dyadic perspective on parent and adolescent social media use: the roles of communication, joint technology use, and validation motives in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND: Parents significantly influence adolescent behavior, yet research often overlooks dyadic interactions in shaping media use. Understanding how family members’ technology habits and communication relate to problematic media use (PMU) is critical for developing effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study used actor–partner interdependence modeling (APIM) to examine associations among time on social media, PMU, and three mediators (open communication, joint technology use, and validation motives) within parent–adolescent dyads. METHODS: Participants were 85 parent–adolescent dyads (

Thallium(I) retention in porous media is restricted by elevated Mn(II) and Fe(III) loadings: Insights into suitability between media and microbial communities.

In tailings permeated by leachate containing thallium (Tl), manganese oxides (MnOx) are recognized as critical substances in immobilizing Tl and preventing its further migration into groundwater. However, dissolved Mn(II) and Fe(III) also exist in micro-oxic environments. The effects and mechanisms of the increased levels of these coexisting ions, driven by environmental processes such as rainfall leaching, on Tl(I) retention remain largely unclear. This study established two systems using natural manganese sand and limestone sand as porous media, demonstrating that the elevated Mn(II)/Fe(III)

Community-Based Participatory Research Approach for Social Media Health Promotion and Youth Engagement.

Social media is crucial for health promotion in Philadelphia, where youth face high rates of teen births and STIs. Proud Teens of Philly (PTOP), linked to Temple University's Center for Asian Health, uses its Youth Advisory Board (YAB) to engage 13-18-year-olds in outreach and content creation on Instagram and YouTube Shorts. The YAB's eight members educate peers on consent, relationships, and STI prevention. A qualitative survey rated the CBPR approach highly, scoring 4.66 out of 5. We emphasized inclusive, interactive content. Establishing privacy protocols remains essential.

Modelling the drivers of outbreak communication in online media news for improved event-based surveillance.

Epidemic intelligence (EI) practitioners at health agencies monitor various sources to detect and follow up on disease outbreak news, including online media monitoring. The Platform for Automated Extraction of Disease Information from the Web (PADI-web), developed in 2016 for the French Platform for Epidemiosurveillance in Animal Health (Platform ESA), monitors and collects outbreak-related news from online media, allowing users to detect and anticipate response to disease outbreaks. Given the mass number of outbreak-related news collected with PADI-web, we aimed to understand better what driv

Identifying Self-Disclosures of Use, Misuse and Addiction in Community-based Social Media Posts.

In the last decade, the United States has lost more than 500,000 people from an overdose involving prescription and illicit opioids making it a national public health emergency (USDHHS, 2017). Medical practitioners require robust and timely tools that can effectively identify at-risk patients. Community-based social media platforms such as Reddit allow self-disclosure for users to discuss otherwise sensitive drug-related behaviors. We present a moderate size corpus of 2500 opioid-related posts from various subreddits labeled with six different phases of opioid use: Medical Use, Misuse, Addicti

Location of Cerebral Microbleeds And Their Association with Carotid Intima-media Thickness: A Community-based Study.

To assess whether high cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are associated with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a marker of systemic atherosclerosis, we cross-sectionally evaluated participants from a community-based study, the I-Lan Longitudinal Aging Study. The participants' demographics and cardiovascular risk factors were determined by questionnaire and/or laboratory measurements. CIMT was measured by ultrasonography. CMBs were assessed by susceptibility-weighted-imaging on 3 T MRI. Of the 962 subjects [62.5(8.6) years, 44.2% men] included, CMBs were found in 134(14.0%) subjects. Among the s

Ethics and the Responsible Conduct of Research in the Chemical Community: The Unique Role and Challenges of the News Media.

Journalists who cover scientific research, including chemistry research, have an obligation to report on alleged cases of research misconduct when knowledge of these surface. New Government definitions of research misconduct, beginning in the late 1990s with the Clinton Administration, have helped scientists, policymakers, as well as journalists sort out and make sense of alleged research misconduct. Journalistic reporting on research misconduct includes many challenges: gathering information from sources who are intimidated or afraid to speak, strict adherence to journalist ethics that take o

Exploring signaling and health beliefs in social media influencer communication on obesity management medications.

Social media discourse surrounding obesity management medications (OMMs) has generated significant public attention, driven largely by celebrities and influencers sharing narratives about their use. However, much of this influencer-generated content remains underexamined, raising concerns about how health beliefs are communicated within sociocultural narratives. This study examines how medical and patient influencers communicate health beliefs about OMMs through signals embedded in their content. Using a qualitative content analysis informed by netnographic principles, 213 YouTube video transc

The relationship between using communication media in non-working hours and job burnout in Jeddah.

Utilization of communication media for work life is an inevitable aspect of most jobs. It is regarded as a two-edged sword, as it significantly affects employees’ mental well-being and efficiency, particularly outside working hours. Despite growing global concern about digital overconnectivity, limited empirical research has examined how communication media use during non-working hours contributes to job burnout, particularly in Saudi Arabia. This research aimed to determine whether using Communication Media in Non-Working Hours (CMNWH) through the lens of Technology-Assisted Supplemental Work

Unlocking the performance of racial dissimilarity in subordinate-supervisor dyads: Collectivism and communication media are key.

As opposed to past literature in which racial dissimilarity has been largely examined through a negative lens, this study fills an important gap by revealing that racial dissimilarity between supervisor and subordinate can lead to a knowledge advantage. Based on the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) framework, we conducted a field study of 151 subordinate-supervisor dyads to examine how dyadic racial dissimilarity impacts Elaboration of Task-Relevant Information (ETRI) and subordinate job performance when jointly moderated by subordinate cultural values and communication media. Data were an

Anti-inflammatory response to 1,8-Cineol and associated microbial communities in Otitis media patients.

Chronic Otitis Media (COM) is defined as long term inflammation and colonization with pathogenic bacteria due to a defect or retraction of the tympanic membrane. Surgical interventions are often augmented by antibiotic resistance development and therefore, off-label treatment using the natural drug 1,8-Cineol was carried out. All COM patients underwent antibiotic therapy and middle ear surgery and developed antibiotic resistances. Microbiological investigations from the auditory canal and stool samples were performed in correlation with the clinical course. Therapy of COM patients with 1,8-Cin
