Integrating community health workers into a community hearing health collaborative to understand the social determinants of health in children with hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing loss (HL) require coordination of care to navigate medical and social services. Strong evidence supports the role of community health workers (CHWs) to identify and address social barriers. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of integrating CHWs into the medical teams of children with HL and identify the social needs associated with their caregivers at a large urban hospital center. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 30 children with HL whose caregivers enrolled in a CHW program between August 1, 2017 and Decembe

Tobacco Knowledge, Attitudes, and Services Among Latino/a Community Health Workers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-related illnesses are among the leading preventable causes of death for Latinos/as in the United States. Latino/a groups are less likely to receive advice to quit from health professionals or use tobacco cessation strategies. The position of community health workers (CHWs) warrants further attention to address tobacco-related disparities in Latino/a communities. The objective of this study was to describe CHWs' roles to inform future smoking cessation training to ensure relevance and accessibility. METHODS: A needs assessment survey, including a 10-item tobacco knowledge q

Savoring the service: A qualitative study of Latine community health workers' health promotion efforts.

Latine communities have long faced stark health inequities and systemic barriers to accessing healthcare services. Community health workers (CHWs) serve as a key link between patients and the often-daunting healthcare system, providing crucial health education and support. Despite this important yet demanding role, little is known about CHWs' personal experiences of community health promotion and how they might draw upon their work for strength and endurance. The present study explored the potential for relational savoring, a procedure that elicits feelings of closeness and connection, to capt

Community health workers: developing roles in public health dementia efforts in the United States.

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are a growing part of the healthcare workforce. Trusted in their communities, CHWs can provide essential health education and connection with culturally responsive health and support resources and programs. Despite their demonstrated effectiveness in improving outcomes in other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV, and pediatric asthma, CHWs have been underutilized in dementia-related efforts. Properly equipped with education and skills, CHWs can fill important gaps throughout the dementia care continuum, strengthening public health efforts to su

Community health care workers in pursuit of TB: Discourses and dilemmas.

Community-led tuberculosis (TB) active case finding is widely promoted, heavily funded, but many efforts fail to meet expectations. The underlying reasons why TB symptom screening programs underperform are poorly understood. This study examines Nigerian stakeholders' insights to characterize the mechanisms, enabling structures and influences that lead programs to succeed or fail. Eight focus group discussions were held with Community Health Workers (CWs) from four models of community-based TB screening and referral. In-depth interviews were conducted with 2 State TB program managers, 8 Communi

Health care waste management in community-based care: experiences of community health workers in low resource communities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, community health workers (CHWs) working in community-based care (CBC) programmes provide care to patients most of whom are living with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). Although studies have shown that the caregiving activities provided by the CHWs generate health care waste (HCW), there is limited information about the experiences of CHWs on health care waste management (HCWM) in CBC. This study explored HCWM in CBC in Durban, South Africa from the perspectives CHWs. METHODS: We used three ethnographic approaches to collect data: focus group discussions, participan

Community health workers support community-based participatory research ethics: lessons learned along the research-to-practice-to-community continuum.

Ethical principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR)--specifically, community engagement, mutual learning, action-reflection, and commitment to sustainability--stem from the work of Kurt Lewin and Paulo Freire. These are particularly relevant in cancer disparities research because vulnerable populations are often construed to be powerless, supposedly benefiting from programs over which they have no control. The long history of exploiting minority individuals and communities for research purposes (the U.S. Public Health Service Tuskegee Syphilis Study being the most notorious) ha

Stakeholders' perceptions of integrated community case management by community health workers: a post-intervention qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Integrated community case management (iCCM) involves delivery of simple medicines to children with pneumonia, diarrhea and/or malaria by community health workers (CHWs). Between 2010 and 2012, an iCCM intervention trial was implemented by Healthy Child Uganda. This study used qualitative tools to assess whether project stakeholders perceived that iCCM improved access to care for children under five years of age. METHODS: The intervention involved training and equipping 196 CHWs in 98 study villages in one sub-county in Uganda in iCCM. During the eight-month intervention, CHWs asse

Performance of community health workers under integrated community case management of childhood illnesses in eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Curative interventions delivered by community health workers (CHWs) were introduced to increase access to health services for children less than five years and have previously targeted single illnesses. However, CHWs in the integrated community case management of childhood illnesses strategy adopted in Uganda in 2010 will manage multiple illnesses. There is little documentation about the performance of CHWs in the management of multiple illnesses. This study compared the performance of CHWs managing malaria and pneumonia with performance of CHWs managing malaria alone in eastern Ug
