Strategies for Successful Integration of Mental Health Care Delivery into Community Health Worker Programs.

PURPOSE: Integrating mental health care and related behavioural interventions into routine primary care delivered by community health workers (CHWs) remains promising, yet challenging. This paper shares strategies for such integration. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This paper draws on real-world implementation experiences from care delivery programs and research studies that used task-sharing to integrate mental health care within routine CHW activities. Observations from research and practice are combined with existing global mental health evidence to derive key implementation insights. FIND

Autistic adults in China and the Netherlands: Proxy-reported community integration and life satisfaction.

Even though there are about 10 million Chinese autistic individuals, we know little about autistic adults in China. This study examined how well young autistic adults in China integrate into their communities (such as having a job, living independently and having friends) and how satisfied they are with their lives as reported by their caregivers. We compared them to autistic adults with similar characteristics (such as high support needs) from the Netherlands. We included 99 autistic adults in China and 109 in the Netherlands (18-30 years). In both countries, autistic adults were reported to

Integration and Extension of Specialty Mental Healthcare Services to Community Practice in Parkinson Disease.

Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with a higher prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms compared with the general population. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, impulse control disorders, and cognitive impairment cause a greater worsening of quality of life than even the motor symptoms that define PD. Despite the ubiquity and impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms, specialty mental healthcare is not routinely available, accessible, or integrated in most neurology practices. Currently, training in PD-specific mental healthcare is not standard in most p

Using a learning community to enhance course integration in a school of allied health.

The occupational therapy department at East Carolina University conducted a case study of an intact learning community to assess its potential to enhance the integration of course content. This learning community of students and faculty offers a method of supplementing curricula. The learning community consisted of seven students and two faculty members. Analysis of individual interviews, focus group discussion, and self-administered self-efficacy assessments indicated that students perceived the learning community as enhancing their ability to integrate course material from pediatrics and res

Severe community-acquired pneumonia: an integral approach.

BACKGROUND: Severe community-acquired pneumonia represents the most critical manifestation of pneumonia acquired outside the hospital and remains a major cause of intensive care admission and death worldwide. It is frequently complicated by acute respiratory failure, circulatory shock, and multiple organ dysfunction, with mortality commonly exceeding 25-40%. Despite progress in vaccination programmes, microbiological diagnostics, and critical care support, major uncertainties persist regarding early recognition, pathogen identification, antimicrobial selection and duration, management of co-in

Integrated management of filarial lymphedema for rural communities.

The Global Alliance for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (GAELF) has recommended exploring local health traditions of skin care and a low cost treatment paradigm for rural communities has been proposed by Vaqas and Ryan. Our case study incorporates these promising treatments for use in treating filariasis in rural communities. Patients having lymphedema of one or both lower limbs (skin: normal, thickened or with trophic/warty changes) received treatment components from ayurveda, yoga and biomedicine simultaneously: including soap wash, phanta soaking, Indian manual lymph drainage (IMLD)

Radiomics integration into a picture archiving and communication system.

Radiomics is referred to as quantitative imaging of biomarkers used for clinical outcome prognosis or tumor characterization. In order to bridge radiomics and its clinical application, we aimed to build an integrated solution of radiomics extraction with an open-source Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The integrated SQLite4Radiomics software was tested in three different imaging modalities and its performance was benchmarked in lung cancer open datasets RIDER and MMD with median extraction time of 10.7 (percentiles 25-75: 8.9-18.7) seconds per ROI in three different configura

Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Aid Community Integration for Veterans With Past Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: Community integration is a key outcome for individuals with a history of homelessness after they attain permanent housing. The goals of finding purpose, meaning, and belonging in one's community-despite their importance in predicting mental well-being and housing stability-are frequently elusive for recently housed individuals. This study aimed to evaluate a novel psychosocial intervention that combines two evidence-based practices, motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to improve motivation and functional outcomes related to community integration.

Successful Integration of Community-Based Rapid Antigen Testing for COVID-19 and Malaria in Mali.

In Mali, access to health care facilities (HCFs) is limited due to distance and transportation costs, and this limitation may have led to an under detection of COVID-19 cases. This prospective randomized study compared a community-based, integrated COVID-19 and malaria testing strategy (intervention arm) to the national standard-of-care strategy (SOC arm). Four health areas were randomly assigned. All people seeking care who accepted the study were enrolled by community health workers (CHWs) and screened for COVID-19 symptoms. In the intervention arm, CHWs performed COVID-19 and/or malaria ant

Integration of Evidence on Community Cancer Risks from Elongate Mineral Particles in Silver Bay, Minnesota.

The potential for cancer-related risks to community members from ambient exposure to elongate mineral particles (EMPs) in taconite processing has not been formally evaluated. We evaluated 926 ambient air samples including 12,928 EMPs (particle structures with length-to-width ratio ≥3:1) collected over 26 years near a taconite processing facility in Silver Bay, Minnesota. Eighty-two percent of EMPs were ≤3 μm in length and 97% of EMPs had an average aspect ratio <20:1. A total of 935 (7.3%) EMPs had length >5 μm and AR ≥3:1. Average ambient concentration of NIOSH countable amphibole EMPs over a

Accessibility patterns and community integration among previously homeless adults: a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach.

Although a desired rehabilitation goal, research continues to document that community integration significantly lags behind housing stability success rates for people of a variety of ages who used to be homeless. While accessibility to resources is an environmental factor that may promote or impede integration activity, there has been little empirical investigation into the impact of proximity of community features on resource use and integration. Using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach, the current study examines how accessibility or proximity to community features in Boston, Un

Mediators and moderators of the relationship between body image and community integration among burn survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Due to medical advances, care for patients that experience burns has shifted from saving life to improving quality of life. Reintegrating into the community and maintain body image satisfaction may be difficult after a severe burn. Several studies have analyzed these two variables independently, but none have addressed a potential interrelationship. AIM: To investigate the indirect or direct relationship of body image and community integration, potentially mediated or moderated by social stigma, symptoms of depression, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or posttr

The reliability and validity of the Community Integration Measure in persons with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the psychometric properties of the Community Integration Measure (CIM), a scale that assesses self-perceived quality of community integration, among persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHOD: Persons (N = 279) with TBI completed the CIM, as well as other measures of community integration and quality of life, and were followed up to 15 years postinjury. RESULTS: The CIM was found to be a reliable instrument with adequate internal consistency. Validity was demonstrated in its relationship to other measures of community integration and life satisfaction. Utilit

How Does Integrated Care Do With, Not for, Neighbourhoods & Communities?

A notable development in recent years has been the emphasis on structuring integrated care around 'neighbourhoods' or 'places' and engaging 'communities' in the planning, design and delivery of support. Across the world, related principles are being used to inform national and regional policies and to develop local practice innovations. Despite such interest, community and neighbourhood working can feel a radical endeavour which clashes with established structures, relationships, investments and skills. A group of international experts from policy, practice, communities and research came toget

Community-for-Care: An Integrated Response to Informal Post-Caregivers.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Informal caregivers play a crucial role in healthcare, but when caregiving ends the "post-caregivers" often remain invisible and unsupported. Post-caregivers face needs such as reconstructing their identity and finding space and time to grieve. This study aimed to design a support network for informal post-caregivers by exploring perceptions of diverse stakeholders. METHODS: A qualitative inductive study was conducted using three focus groups (n = 15; ages 35-70; 12 women, 3 men) held online between June and July 2023. Participants included palliative care team members,
