A framework for quantifying node-level community structure group differences in brain connectivity networks.

We propose a framework for quantifying node-level community structures between groups using anatomical brain networks derived from DTI-tractography. To construct communities, we computed hierarchical binary trees by maximizing two metrics: the well-known modularity metric (Q), and a novel metric that measures the difference between inter-community and intra-community path lengths. Changes in community structures on the nodal level were assessed between generated trees and a statistical framework was developed to detect local differences between two groups of community structures. We applied th

Social networks and their association with depression in community-dwelling older adults: a meta-analysis.

Depression is a common mental health condition among older adults, while social networks offer protection. This meta-analysis quantifies the relationship between the structural aspects of social networks and depression in this population. Seven electronic databases were searched from inception until July 2023. Eligible studies focused on community-dwelling older adults (mean age ≥60), defined depression, referenced social networks in the abstract, and were published in English. Random-effects meta-analyses combined standardized beta coefficients for continuous depression outcomes and log odds

Microbial community networks across body sites are associated with susceptibility to respiratory infections in infants.

Respiratory tract infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide in young children. Concepts such as the gut-lung axis have highlighted the impact of microbial communities at distal sites in mediating disease locally. However, little is known about the extent to which microbial communities from multiple body sites are linked, and how this relates to disease susceptibility. Here, we combine 16S-based rRNA sequencing data from 112 healthy, term born infants, spanning three body sites (oral cavity, nasopharynx, gut) and the first six months of life. Using a cross-niche microbia

Detection of stable community structures within gut microbiota co-occurrence networks from different human populations.

OBJECTIVES: Current guidelines for the treatment of patients with obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) recommend low dose aspirin (LDA) and prophylactic doses of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Most clinicians use a fixed dosage of LMWH in pregnant APS women despite the fact that there are no clinical trials establishing that fixed doses are more efficacious than adjusted ones in preventing pregnancy complications. The efficacy and safety of adjusted single daily doses of LMWH (nadroparin) combined with LDA have thus been evaluated in 33 consecutive pregnancies in women with diagnose

Intercellular communication in the brain via dendritic nanotubular network.

Recent studies have identified intercellular networks for material exchange by bridge-like nanotubular structures, yet their existence in neurons remains unexplored within the brain. Here, we identified long, thin dendritic filopodia that establish direct dendrite-to-dendrite contacts, forming dendritic nanotubes (DNTs) in mammalian brains. Using super-resolution microscopy, we characterized their unique molecular composition and dynamics in dissociated neurons, enabling Ca2+ propagation over distances. Utilizing imaging and machine-learning-based analysis, we confirmed the in situ presence of

Disruption of the Cortical-Vagal Communication Network in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neuropathy characterized by motor disorders, but it has also been associated with the presence of autonomic alterations as a result of degradation of the dopaminergic system. Studying the relation between Band Power time series (BPts) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), has been proposed as a tool to explore the bidirectional communication pathways between cortex and autonomic control. This work presents a primer analysis on study brain ↔ heart interaction on a databse of PD patients under two conditions: without and after levadopa (L-dopa) intake. Additionally a he

Massachusetts Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (MassJCOIN).

A major driver of the U.S. opioid crisis is limited access to effective medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) that reduce overdose risks. Traditionally, jails and prisons in the U.S. have not initiated or maintained MOUD for incarcerated individuals with OUD prior to their return to the community, which places them at high risk for fatal overdose. A 2018 law (Chapter 208) made Massachusetts (MA) the first state to mandate that five county jails deliver all FDA-approved MOUDs (naltrexone [NTX], buprenorphine [BUP], and methadone). Chapter 208 established a 4-year pilot program to expand ac

Neural network communication facilitates verbal working memory.

Oscillatory brain activity in the theta, alpha, and gamma frequency ranges has been associated with working memory (WM). In addition to alpha and theta activity associated with WM retention, and gamma band activity with item encoding, activity in the alpha band is related to the deployment of attention resources and information. The present study sought to specify distinct roles of neuromagnetic 4-7 Hz theta, 9-13 Hz alpha, and 50-70 Hz gamma power modulation and communication in fronto-parietal networks during cued, hemifield-specific item presentation in a modified Sternberg verbal WM task i

Finding communities in networks in the strong and almost-strong sense.

Finding communities, or clusters or modules, in networks can be done by optimizing an objective function defined globally and/or by specifying conditions which must be satisfied by all communities. Radicchi et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 101, 2658 (2004)] define a susbset of vertices of a network to be a community in the strong sense if each vertex of that subset has a larger inner degree than its outer degree. A partition in the strong sense has only strong communities. In this paper we first define an enumerative algorithm to list all partitions in the strong sense of a network of modera

Communication networks in the brain: neurons, receptors, neurotransmitters, and alcohol.

Nerve cells (i.e., neurons) communicate via a combination of electrical and chemical signals. Within the neuron, electrical signals driven by charged particles allow rapid conduction from one end of the cell to the other. Communication between neurons occurs at tiny gaps called synapses, where specialized parts of the two cells (i.e., the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons) come within nanometers of one another to allow for chemical transmission. The presynaptic neuron releases a chemical (i.e., a neurotransmitter) that is received by the postsynaptic neuron's specialized proteins called neu

Multiscale systems modelling of communication networks in brain metastasis.

Brain metastasis remains a major clinical challenge because intracranial progression and therapeutic resistance arise not only from tumour-intrinsic programmes but also from coordinated communication across molecular, cellular, spatial and systemic scales. In this Review, we integrate findings from spatial transcriptomics/proteomics, single-cell and multimodal omics, and computational systems modelling to frame brain metastasis as a multiscale communication disorder in which immune, glial, vascular and systemic networks collectively shape tumour-permissive ecosystems. We discuss how network-ba

Intercellular communication in the brain through a dendritic nanotubular network.

Intercellular nanotubular networks mediate material exchange, but their existence in neurons remains to be explored in detail. We identified long, thin dendritic filopodia forming direct dendrite-dendrite nanotubes (DNTs) in mammalian cortex. Super-resolution microscopy in dissociated neurons revealed DNTs' actin-rich composition and dynamics, enabling long-range calcium ion (Ca2+) propagation. Imaging and machine learning-based analysis validated in situ DNTs as anatomically distinct from synaptic spines. DNTs actively transported small molecules and human amyloid-β (Aβ); DNT density increase

An integrated cytokine and kynurenine network as the basis of neuroimmune communication.

Two of the molecular families closely associated with mediating communication between the brain and immune system are cytokines and the kynurenine metabolites of tryptophan. Both groups regulate neuron and glial activity in the central nervous system (CNS) and leukocyte function in the immune system, although neither group alone completely explains neuroimmune function, disease occurrence or severity. This essay suggests that the two families perform complementary functions generating an integrated network. The kynurenine pathway determines overall neuronal excitability and plasticity by modul

The reputational and social network benefits of prosociality in an Andean community.

Several theories have emerged to explain how group cooperation (collective action) can arise and be maintained in the face of incentives to engage in free riding. Explanations focusing on reputational benefits and partner choice have particular promise for cases in which punishment is absent or insufficient to deter free riding. In indigenous communities of highland Peru, collective action is pervasive and provides critical benefits. Participation in collective action is unequal across households, but all households share its benefits. Importantly, investment in collective action involves cons

Postdate pregnancy in a network of community hospitals: management and outcome.

The outcome of 116 postdate pregnancies managed by 14 family physicians in small community hospitals is compared with the outcome of term gestations in the same setting. The postdate pregnancies in this relatively unselected population showed an increase in incidence of macrosomia and fetal heart rate abnormalities similar to those reported from referral centers. The increases in incidence of meconium staining and low Apgar scores reported previously were not found. The postdate patients had more frequent induction, augmentation, and amniotomy, as well as a significant increase in primary cesa

Key Node Identification in Spatial Information Networks via Soft Community Partition and Hypergraph Interweaving Degree.

Due to the widespread deployment of large-scale satellite constellations, Spatial Information Networks (SINs) exhibit increasingly high-order node and service coupling characteristics, rendering them vulnerable to node removal and cascading failures. Traditional graph-theoretic models fail to capture the inherent multi-node cooperative relationships within SINs, while conventional centrality metrics overlook service coupling features and cross-community propagation risks, leading to inaccurate key node identification. To address these issues, this paper proposes a key node mining method based

Effects of Resource Sharing Networks on Community Anti-Drug Coalitions' Outcomes: A Social Network Analysis.

Substance use-related problems continue to be a national public health crisis despite years of prevention efforts. Community anti-drug coalitions are well positioned to address substance use at local levels. Coalitions often rely on their members to connect to resources they need to address community issues and plan for sustainability over time. Such capacity building occurs through voluntary cooperation among members, making it essential to understand the role network connections play. This study sought to determine whether structural characteristics of coalitions' resource sharing networks i

Analyses of Contact Networks of Community Dogs on a University Campus in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

Free-roaming dogs have been identified as an important reservoir of rabies in many countries including Thailand. There is a need for novel insights to improve current rabies control strategies in these countries. Network analysis is commonly used to study the interactions between individuals or organizations and has been applied in preventive veterinary medicine. However, contact networks of domestic free-roaming dogs are mostly unexplored. The objective of this study was to explore the contact network of free-roaming dogs residing on a university campus. Three one-mode networks were created u

Efficacy of community-based physiotherapy networks for patients with Parkinson's disease: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with Parkinson's disease are treated with physiotherapy. We have developed a community-based professional network (ParkinsonNet) that involves training of a selected number of expert physiotherapists to work according to evidence-based recommendations, and structured referrals to these trained physiotherapists to increase the numbers of patients they treat. We aimed to assess the efficacy of this approach for improving health-care outcomes. METHODS: Between February, 2005, and August, 2007, we did a cluster-randomised trial with 16 clusters (defined as community hosp
