Theory-informed strategies to address factors anticipated to influence implementation and people's participation in community pharmacy-based diabetes prevention services.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of non-diabetic hyperglycaemia and implementation of diet and lifestyle changes can prevent type 2 diabetes. However, low participation in diabetes prevention services remains a problem in the UK. The community pharmacy, one of the most accessible healthcare settings in the UK, could provide one solution to improving participation. AIM: To prioritize factors that could influence delivery of, and people-participation in, community pharmacy-based diabetes prevention services, and to identify strategies to facilitate successful implementation. METHODS: A mixed-m

Uptake of Travel Health Services by Community Pharmacies and Patients Following Pharmacist Immunization Scope Expansion in Ontario, Canada.

In December 2016, pharmacists in Ontario, Canada with authorization to administer injections saw an expansion in their scope from a restriction to the influenza vaccination only to now including an additional 13 vaccine-preventable diseases, largely those related to travel. It was uncertain whether this change in scope would see sufficient uptake, or translate to a corresponding expansion in other travel health service offerings from community pharmacies. In October/November 2017 a survey was conducted of all licensed community pharmacists in Ontario, followed by semi-structured interviews wit

Implementation of a community pharmacy-based pre-exposure prophylaxis service: a novel model for pre-exposure prophylaxis care.

UNLABELLED: Background National guidelines for the provision of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce a person's risk of acquiring HIV were made available in 2014. We created a pharmacist-managed HIV PrEP clinic in a community pharmacy setting at Kelley-Ross Pharmacy in Seattle, WA, USA. METHODS: The clinic operates under a collaborative drug therapy agreement based on these guidelines. This allows pharmacists to initiate and manage tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine under the supervision of a physician medical director. RESULTS: Between March 2015 and February 2018, 714 pat

Chlamydia screening in community pharmacies: a systematic literature review of the characteristics of service users and a meta-analysis of chlamydia prevalence.

A systematic review was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) infection among those screened in community pharmacies. The uptake of screening and clients' sociodemographic and behavioural characteristics were also reviewed. Eleven papers contributed to the final review. The proportional meta-analysis showed a chlamydia positivity of 8.1% (95% confidence interval: 7.3%-8.9%). Chlamydia screening programs in community pharmacies tended to be targeted at certain client groups such as those seeking emergency contraception in pharmacies. The pharmacists were rel

Improving Access to HIV Prevention Services in Community Pharmacies in the US Southeast: Protocol for a Hybrid Type 1 Effectiveness-Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in HIV prevention, many Americans, particularly those from historically underserved communities (eg, racially and sexually minoritized individuals and people who use drugs), continue to face significant barriers to accessing crucial HIV prevention services such as HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis. Integrating these services into community pharmacies is a viable yet underused solution to overcoming access-related challenges. However, few studies have used an implementation science approach to assess the implementation and effectiveness of such services i
