Parkinson's disease psychosis: therapy tips and the importance of communication between neurologists and psychiatrists.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and complex neurodegenerative disorder resulting in a mixture of motor and nonmotor symptoms. Psychosis develops in around 60% of PD patients during and can be one of the most challenging nonmotor symptoms. PD psychosis is considered the single greatest precipitant for nursing home placement. PD psychosis is an independent predictor of increased mortality, and there is no 'ideal' or universal treatment strategy. The treatment approach to PD psychosis should be tailored and individualized for each patient. In this review, we will discuss PD psychosis and pr

Remaining Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Spiritual and Psychiatric Reflections on Magnifica Humanitas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping the ways in which psychiatry understands, predicts, communicates, and responds to mental suffering. Although ethical discussions have rightly emphasised safety, transparency, privacy, accountability, and bias, the psychiatric implications of AI also require deeper anthropological and spiritual reflection. Developed from Paraguay and situated within international psychiatric and spiritual-health scholarship, this conceptual paper examines AI in psychiatry through the lens of Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, which add

Validation of an objective structured clinical examination in psychiatry.

PURPOSE: To examine the validity of a psychiatry clerkship's objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). METHOD: In 1996, 33 clinical clerks and 17 psychiatry residents at the University of Toronto participated in an eight-station OSCE evaluated by psychiatrist-examiners using binary checklists and global ratings. Prior to the OSCE, communication course instructors were asked to rank the clerks on interviewing ability, and faculty supervisors were asked to identify the OSCE stations on which the clerks were likely to do well or poorly. RESULTS: Mean OSCE scores were significantly highe

Psychiatry meets neurodegeneration - A collaborative approach to dementia prevention.

The advent of amyloid-targeting therapies and biomarker-based risk stratification has transformed the understanding of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. These conditions are now recognized as chronic, detectable and modifiable, often presenting decades before clinical symptoms appear. While this paradigm shift enables earlier intervention, it also raises ethical and psychological challenges that necessitate a redefined role for psychiatry. Instead of merely supporting late-stage care, psychiatry is well-placed to facilitate risk communication, promote resilience, and encourage adaptiv

Challenges and outcomes of parallel care for patients with co-occurring psychiatric disorder in methadone maintenance treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Most opioid users seeking treatment in community-based substance abuse treatment programs have at least one co-occurring psychiatric disorder, and the presence of psychiatric comorbidity in this population is associated with increased psychological distress, poorer quality of life, and reduced response to substance abuse treatment. This observational study describes clinical outcomes of referring patients receiving methadone maintenance with at least one co-occurring psychiatric disorder to a community psychiatry program located on the same hospital campus. METHODS: Participants (n

[Ethics: A tool for combating inequalities in the perception of constraints].

Psychiatry sometimes treats patients who do not acknowledge or resist treatment and who continue to face stigma in our society. Across the country, psychiatric inpatient units operate under a wide variety of service models, which influences how patients' rights are exercised and the nature of the caregiving work. Healthcare professionals from Brittany and Île-de-France highlight the importance of an ethical approach that fosters the therapeutic alliance. Breaking down barriers will help bring psychiatry further into the community and foster a different perspective on the "strangeness" of psych

Forensic assertive community treatment: an emerging best practice.

People with serious mental illness (SMI) are over-represented throughout the US criminal justice system. To address this issue, forensic assertive community treatment has recently emerged as a best-practice intervention. Also known as forensic ACT, ForACT, or most commonly as "FACT," forensic assertive community treatment is an adaptation of the assertive community treatment (ACT) model. Unlike ACT, however, FACT is purposefully designed to prevent arrest and incarceration among people with SMI who have histories of involvement with the criminal justice system (i.e., "justice-involved" individ

Deaf psychiatry: a review of the difficulties and the effect of an inquiry on current practice.

Communication is a huge difficulty in researching Deafness in psychiatry and in practically assessing and treating deaf patients. This paper aims to review the difficulties surrounding the assessment and treatment of deaf patients, using a review of the current literature on audio-visual hallucinations as an example. It will also include a summary of the published inquiry into the care and treatment of Daniel Joseph (a profoundly Deaf man), and a review of the Department of Health consultation document and NHS England responses to that inquiry as evidence of why these difficulties have relevan

Adherence to behavioral therapy and psychiatry visits in a safety-net setting in Virginia, USA.

Little is known about predictors of adherence to outpatient behavioural therapy and psychiatry visits in those who experience homelessness. Yet, consistent receipt of services in the community is critical to preventing use of acute care psychiatric services, which cause a significant cost burden to the mental health system. This retrospective study examined sociodemographic, housing instability and health-related factors associated with adherence to behavioural therapy and psychiatry appointments among 1711 clients served by an urban healthcare for the homeless centre in Virginia, USA. EPA guidance on improving the image of psychiatry.

This paper explores causes, explanations and consequences of the negative image of psychiatry and develops recommendations for improvement. It is primarily based on a WPA guidance paper on how to combat the stigmatization of psychiatry and psychiatrists and a Medline search on related publications since 2010. Furthermore, focussing on potential causes and explanations, the authors performed a selective literature search regarding additional image-related issues such as mental health literacy and diagnostic and treatment issues. Underestimation of psychiatry results from both unjustified prejud

Virtual Collaborative Care Versus Specialty Psychiatry Treatment for Depression or Anxiety.

Objective: While collaborative care is known to improve depressive and anxiety symptoms in primary care, comparative effectiveness studies of virtual collaborative care versus virtual specialty psychiatry treatment in real world settings are lacking. This study examined patient depressive and anxiety symptoms over 6 months in collaborative care versus specialty psychiatry. Methods: This was an observational study with target trial emulation in a large, community-based, integrated health care system. Participants were ≥18 years old with mild-moderate depressive or anxiety symptoms measured by t

Alternative and complementary approaches in psychiatry: beliefs versus evidence.

While the legitimacy of medical treatments is more and more questioned, one sees a paradoxical increase in nonconventional approaches, notably so in psychiatry. Over time, approaches that were considered valuable by the scientific community were found to be inefficacious, while other approaches, labelled as alternative or complementary, were finally discovered to be useful in a few indications. From this observation, we propose to classify therapies as orthodox (scientifically validated) or heterodox (scientifically not validated). To illustrate these two categories, we discuss the place, the

Addressing the associative stigma of psychiatry and psychiatrists: a survey on the attitudes of medical and nursing students and doctors in Verona, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Negative societal attitudes toward mental health often contribute to misconceptions and stereotypes about psychiatry, a phenomenon known as "associative stigma". This stigma can hinder collaboration between psychiatrists and other specialists and deter students from pursuing psychiatry as a career. This study focused on one of the three main components of stigma by examining attitudes toward psychiatry and psychiatrists among medical and nursing students, as well as doctors, and identifying factors that influence these attitudes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted amo

Palliative psychiatry for severe persistent mental illness as a new approach to psychiatry? Definition, scope, benefits, and risks.

BACKGROUND: As a significant proportion of patients receiving palliative care suffer from states of anxiety, depression, delirium, or other mental symptoms, psychiatry and palliative care already collaborate closely in the palliative care of medical conditions. Despite this well-established involvement of psychiatrists in palliative care, psychiatry does not currently explicitly provide palliative care for patients with mental illness outside the context of terminal medical illness. DISCUSSION: Based on the WHO definition of palliative care, a, a working definition of palliative psychiatry is

French validation of the short version of the ASA questionnaire: An exploration of the socio-technical imaginaries and cosmology of Socially Interactive Agent evaluation.

CONTEXT: Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs) in mental health are of great promise for psychiatry, but currently lack validated instruments to evaluate both technological acceptance and clinical alliance. In the Human-Computer Interface (HCI) community, SIAs are broadly evaluated using the Artificial Social Agent Questionnaire (ASAQ), to evaluate how users perceive and interact with SIAs. Despite its importance in the SIA community, this questionnaire is unknown in psychiatry and has never been validated in French. Furthermore, doubts remain about the constructs measured by it. OBJECTIVES: Our

Psychiatry and emergency medicine: medical student and physician attitudes toward homeless persons.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to explore changes in medical students' attitudes toward homeless persons during the Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine clerkships. Simultaneously, this study explored attitudes toward homeless persons held by Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine residents and faculty in an attempt to uncover the "hidden curriculum" in medical education, in which values are communicated from teacher to student outside of the formal instruction. METHOD: A group of 79 students on Psychiatry and 66 on Emergency Medicine clerkships were surveyed at the beginning and end of thei

Mental health as an advocacy priority in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

This column reviews the evolution of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) mental health advocacy in relation to modern mental health advocacy efforts. In addition to developments in organized psychiatry (e.g., American Psychiatric Association's LGBT caucus), grassroots LGBT community initiatives are playing an important role (e.g., Trevor Project providing crisis intervention/suicide prevention services to LGBT youth, face-to-face mental health services in LGBT community centers). Studies have found that LGBT individuals are at increased risk for mental health problems (e.g., depress

The Psychopharmacological Revolution in the USSR: Schizophrenia Treatment and the Thaw in Soviet Psychiatry, 1954-64.

Twentieth-century psychiatry was transformed in the 1950s and 1960s by the introduction of powerful psychopharmaceuticals, particularly Chlorpromazine (Thorazine). This paper examines the reception of Chlorpromazine in the Soviet Union and its effect on the Soviet practice of psychiatry. The drug, known in the USSR by the name Aminazine, was first used in Moscow in 1954 and was officially approved in 1955. I argue that Soviet psychiatrists initially embraced it because Aminazine enabled them to successfully challenge the Stalin-era dogma in their field (Ivan Pavlov's 'theory of higher nervous
