Field testing Australian bat lyssavirus risk communication resources.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) is a fatal zoonosis, which can be transmitted to humans through scratches or bites from infected bats. Currently, there is a lack of research evaluating risk communication resources about ABLV or the dangers from handling bats. The purpose of this study was to field test resources aimed at educating the public about risks to humans and bats from human-bat interaction, then update these resources based upon feedback to ensure they were relevant and appropriately targeted to the public. METHODS: Thirteen semi-structured interviews with a purposi

PRISM (Program of Resources, Information and Support for Mothers) Protocol for a community-randomised trial [ISRCTN03464021].

BACKGROUND: In the year after birth one in six women has a depressive illness, and 30% are still depressed, or depressed again, when their child is 2 years old, 94% experience at least one major health problem (e.g. back pain, perineal pain, mastitis, urinary or faecal incontinence), 26% experience sexual problems and almost 20% have relationship problems with partners. Women with depression report less practical and emotional support from partners, less social support overall, more negative life events, and poorer physical health. Their perceptions of factors contributing to depression are la

People and sites as community resources for preventing and managing chronic health conditions: A conceptual analysis.

The prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) require community-based efforts-especially as their burden grows, and recognition of the need for engaging diverse stakeholders in care grows. The aim of this conceptual analysis was to categorise existing community resources (people and sites) used to support such efforts, the mechanisms by which they work, and the conditions that constrain their effectiveness. We developed an initial framework for categorising community resources. We then used a sample of the literature- 24 studies from 12 countries-to refine and enric

Cryopreservation of Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus Sperm to Support Community-Based Repository Development for Preservation of Genetic Resources.

Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus is an emerging model organism in which cutting-edge genomic tools and resources are being developed for use in a growing number of research fields. One limitation of this model system is the lack of long-term storage for genetic resources. The goal of this study was to establish a generalizable cryopreservation approach for Hydractinia that would support future repository development for other cnidarian species. Specific objectives were to: (1) characterize basic parameters related to sperm quality; (2) develop a generalizable approach for sperm collection; (3) as

Screening at hair salons: The feasibility of using community resources to screen for intimate partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a source of severe health consequences, and therefore, health care organizations have recommended routine IPV screening. Implementing health-related screenings outside of health care facilities is common public health practice, but to date, IPV screening in hair salons has not been reported. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of IPV among women at hair salons. We hypothesized that women would disclose IPV in this setting and that rates of abuse would reflect national averages. METHODS: We recruited a convenience sample of

Health care waste management in community-based care: experiences of community health workers in low resource communities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In South Africa, community health workers (CHWs) working in community-based care (CBC) programmes provide care to patients most of whom are living with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). Although studies have shown that the caregiving activities provided by the CHWs generate health care waste (HCW), there is limited information about the experiences of CHWs on health care waste management (HCWM) in CBC. This study explored HCWM in CBC in Durban, South Africa from the perspectives CHWs. METHODS: We used three ethnographic approaches to collect data: focus group discussions, participan

Community health worker case-detection of asthma or reactive airways disease in a resource-poor community in Nicaragua.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide, but many cases may remain undiagnosed. Community health worker (CHW) programs have improved detection of other diseases such as childhood pneumonia, but none have been validated for detection of asthma in resource-poor settings. We hypothesized that a CHW administered questionnaire would be effective in case-detection of asthma in a poor Nicaraguan community. METHODS: We enrolled children aged 2-17 from a small semiurban Nicaraguan community. A trained CHW administered a questionnaire based on a previously

Linguistic and Material Ways of Communicating with Cows-The Dung Pusher as a Semiotic Resource.

This study examines how farm workers working with cattle talk to and interact with these non-human animals. This study presents linguistic animal studies and multi-species pragmatics, and it is based on fieldwork, interviews, and video recordings from several types of Finnish dairy farms. This study concentrates especially on one facet of human-cattle interaction: how humans use dung pushers and other sticks when communicating with cows. Thus, it draws on the materiality of language. It is shown how objects, bodies, and spaces, as well as words and linguistic constructions, are meaningful in h

Resource Allocation for Cognitive LEO Satellite Systems: Facilitating IoT Communications.

Due to the characteristics of global coverage, on-demand access, and large capacity, the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication (SatCom) has become one promising technology to support the Internet-of-Things (IoT). However, due to the scarcity of satellite spectrum and the high cost of designing satellites, it is difficult to launch a dedicated satellite for IoT communications. To facilitate IoT communications over LEO SatCom, in this paper, we propose the cognitive LEO satellite system, where the IoT users act as the secondary user to access the legacy LEO satellites and cognitively use

The PeptideAtlas of a widely cultivated fish Labeo rohita: A resource for the Aquaculture Community.

Labeo rohita (Rohu) is one of the most important fish species produced in world aquaculture. Integrative omics research provides a strong platform to understand the basic biology and translate this knowledge into sustainable solutions in tackling disease outbreak, increasing productivity and ensuring food security. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics has provided insights to understand the biology in a new direction. Very little proteomics work has been done on 'Rohu' limiting such resources for the aquaculture community. Here, we utilised an extensive mass spectrometry based proteomic profilin

Collaborative approach to dental care provision in resource poor Honduran community.

Access to dental care is becoming an increasing problem in the United States, as in other parts of the world. The dental program at the University of Rochester clinic in Honduras, as well as other projects, have demonstrated that the ability to deliver quality care can be enhanced by expanded use of medical personnel, other than dentists, and even by civic action. While there is no substitute for the trained dentist, perhaps techniques learned in these projects can alleviate some of the predicaments until such a dentist is accessible.

Improving meat inspection and control in resource-poor communities: the Nepal example.

Meat is an important source of protein and a valuable commodity in resource-poor communities. In many developing countries, lack of appropriate slaughtering facilities and unsatisfactory slaughtering techniques are causing unnecessary losses of meat as well as invaluable by-products from animal carcasses. Slaughtering places are frequently contaminated and may not be protected against dogs, rodents and insects. Meat products coming from such conditions are often deteriorated due to bacterial infection or contaminated, which may cause food poisoning or diseases in consumers. In many developing
