Place your bet on change: the Young Adult Action Collective leading community-academic partnership efforts to understand and address gambling harms in Springfield, MA.

This community case study describes the development and implementation of the Gambling Awareness Research Initiative (GARI), a community-academic research partnership in Springfield, Massachusetts, created in response to the expansion of legalized gambling and the need for community-driven research to further understand gambling's impact on youth and young adults. The initiative uses a participatory action research design that positions the Young Adult Action Collective, a group of young adults from the city, as co-researchers and co-leaders, working in partnership with the city's Department o

Patient education in the hospital setting.

S.G. Rosenberg outlines three types of problems which occur in the care of the chronically ill. The first of these is clinical failure which occurs with an unavoidable exacerbation of the illness. Second is medical failure which occurs when technology cannot provide a cure. And third is an education failure when the patient will not follow the prescribed regime. This can result from either a choice made by the patient or family not to comply, or from a lack of knowledge on the part of the patient, or the lack of a planned education approach as part of the patient's care. Compliance is often su

A Nurse-Run Public Health Clinic for Individuals Utilizing a Community Outreach Center.

This article describes a nurse-run clinic for low-income individuals or individuals experiencing homelessness. We conducted a quality improvement project using data from 111 individuals over 194 visits. Thirty-seven percent of patients had difficulty managing their health and 22% reported being in an active health crisis. The visits resulted in patients leaving with their visit goal being met (86%), and 96% of nonemergent cases being diverted from the emergency room. The nurse-run clinic provided access to care and served as a safety net for a vulnerable population, providing support for this

Needle in a haystack: the yield of syphilis outreach screening at 5 US sites-2000 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: Screening for syphilis has been performed for decades, but it is unclear if the practice yields many cases at acceptable cost, and if so, at which venues. We attempted a retrospective study to determine the costs, yield, and feasibility of analyzing health department-funded syphilis outreach screening in 5 diverse US sites with significant disease burdens. METHODS: Data (venue, costs, number of tests, reactive tests, new diagnoses) from 2000 to 2007 were collected for screening efforts funded by public health departments from Philadelphia; New York City; Washington, District of Co

Community relations 2.0.

Before the Internet, organizations had far more time to monitor and respond to community activity, but that luxury is long gone, leaving them in dire need of a coherent outreach strategy, fresh skills, and adaptive tactics. Drawing on the authors' study of more than two dozen firms, this article describes the changes wrought by social media in particular and shows managers how to take advantage of them--lessons that Kaiser Permanente, Domino's, and others learned the hard way. Social media platforms enhance the power of communities by promoting deep relationships, facilitating rapid organizati

The InterCon network: a program for education partnerships at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center.

The University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center (UT-Houston) has created programs and activities to address the state's pressing needs in minority education. Through InterCon, a network of universities and K-12 schools, UT-Houston works with its partners to identify competitive candidates in the current pool of minority graduates with bachelor's degrees and to help them--along with their non-minority counterparts--progress in their education. Another objective is to expand the pool of minorities underrepresented in medicine who complete high school and go to college. In 1994 UT-Houston a

Rebuilding the lives of the homeless.

Drawing on the community's health care, business, and social service resources, the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless in Jacksonville, Fla., goes beyond just meeting the food, shelter, and medical needs of the city's destitute. As one center resident puts it: "Homelessness is feeling like you're less of a human being. I really don't feel homeless; I feel like this is my home."

The Bidirectional Engagement and Equity (BEE) Research Framework to Guide Community-Academic Partnerships: Developed From a Narrative Review and Diverse Stakeholder Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The engagement of community partners in equitable partnerships with academic teams is necessary to achieve health equity. However, there is no standardized approach to support bidirectional engagement among research stakeholders in the context of partnership equity at each phase of the research process. OBJECTIVE: We describe the development of a systematic framework along with competencies and tools promoting bidirectional engagement and equity within community-academic partnerships at each phase of the research process. DESIGN: We conducted a four-step research process between

Use of Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers in a Hospital-based Disaster Exercise.

UNLABELLED: Introduction The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of community-based volunteer groups created in 2002 by the Office of the United States Surgeon General (Rockville, Maryland USA) to augment the nation's ability to respond to medical and public health emergencies. However, there is little evidence-based literature available to guide hospitals on the optimal use of medical volunteers and hesitancy on the part of hospitals to use them. Hypothesis/Problem This study sought to determine how MRC volunteers can be used in hospital-based disasters through their participati

Rapid Response to the Legalization of Fentanyl Test Strips in Alabama: An Academic-Community Partnership.

In June 2022, Alabama legalized fentanyl test strips (FTS). In response to this new opportunity to prevent overdoses, Project Linkage, Education, and Prevention (LEAP)-an academic-community partnership providing substance use prevention services-quickly purchased FTS and started distributing them in the Birmingham area. We describe how the Addiction Prevention Coalition, a substance use education and harm reduction provider, distributed 7300 FTS in the first year of legalization via Project LEAP and discuss its efforts to decrease substance use among young people. The Radical Welcome Engagement Restoration Model and Assessment Tool for Community-Engaged Partnerships.

People experiencing addiction, houselessness, or who have a history of incarceration have worse health outcomes compared with the general population. This is due, in part, to practices and policies of historically White institutions that exclude the voices, perspectives, and contributions of communities of color in leadership, socio-economic development, and decision-making that matters for their wellbeing. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches hold promise for addressing health inequities. However, full engagement of people harmed by systemic injustices in CBPR partnerships

A study establishing sensitivity and accuracy of smartphone photography in ophthalmologic community outreach programs: Review of a smart eye camera.

PURPOSE: Diseases affecting the cornea are a major cause of corneal blindness globally. The pressing issue we are facing today is the lack of diagnostic devices in rural areas to diagnose these conditions. The aim of the study is to establish sensitivity and accuracy of smartphone photography using a smart eye camera (SEC) in ophthalmologic community outreach programs. METHODS: In this pilot study, a prospective non-randomized comparative analysis of inter-observer variability of anterior segment imaging recorded using an SEC was performed. Consecutive 100 patients with corneal pathologies, w

Substance use disorder education via digital outreach: An evaluation of program dissemination and implementation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) remain a significant public health concern in Alabama, where usage rates for substances such as opioids, alcohol, and tobacco exceed national averages. Vulnerable populations face additional barriers due to stigma, access issues, and systemic inequities. There is a need for accessible, scalable educational interventions targeting both health care professionals and community members. OBJECTIVES: To design, disseminate, and implement a web-based educational initiative-the Substance Use Disorders in Alabama (SUDA) program-to address emerging substance u
