A cross-sectional analysis of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in maternal-fetal medicine physicians in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue is secondary traumatic distress experienced by providers from ongoing contact with patients who are suffering. Compassion satisfaction is emotional fulfillment from caring for others. Burnout is distress related to dissonance between job demands and available resources. Although burnout is well-studied, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue are neglected components of physician well-being. Because of recurrent exposure to adverse outcomes, maternal-fetal medicine providers may be at particular risk for compassion fatigue. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to

Compassion Fatigue among Healthcare, Emergency and Community Service Workers: A Systematic Review.

Compassion fatigue (CF) is stress resulting from exposure to a traumatized individual. CF has been described as the convergence of secondary traumatic stress (STS) and cumulative burnout (BO), a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by a depleted ability to cope with one's everyday environment. Professionals regularly exposed to the traumatic experiences of the people they service, such as healthcare, emergency and community service workers, are particularly susceptible to developing CF. This can impact standards of patient care, relationships with colleagues, or lead to more serious

Public knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about homeless people: evidence for compassion fatigue.

Media reports suggest that the public is becoming impatient with the homeless--that so-called "compassion fatigue" has gripped the nation. This characterization of public sentiment could have important policy consequences-- restrictive measures can be justified by growing public impatience, and progressive housing policies seem feasible within a hostile climate of opinion. But evidence to support the compassion fatigue notion is anecdotal. We examine the issue by tracking the results of public opinion polls and by reporting detailed evidence from a nationwide random-digit dial telephone survey

A cross-sectional pilot study of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in pediatric palliative care providers in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Compassion fatigue (CF) is secondary traumatic distress experienced by providers from contact with patients' suffering. Burnout (BO) is job-related distress resulting from uncontrollable workplace factors that manifest in career dissatisfaction. Compassion satisfaction (CS) is emotional fulfillment derived from caring for others. The literature on BO in healthcare providers is extensive, whereas CF and CS have not been comprehensively studied. Because of ongoing exposure to patient and family distress, pediatric palliative care (PPC) providers may be at particular risk for CF. We co

The Experiences of Compassion Fatigue in Oncology and Palliative Care Nursing: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Oncology and palliative care nursing involves prolonged exposure to suffering, death, and emotionally demanding care, placing nurses at heightened risk of compassion fatigue. Although previous research has identified associated risk and protective factors, less attention has been given to understanding how compassion fatigue develops and is sustained within clinical practice. This scoping review aimed to examine the emotional, relational, individual, and organizational processes shaping compassion fatigue among nurses working in oncology and palliative care settings. METHODS: A scopi

Exploring the Experiences of Compassion Fatigue Amongst Peer Support Workers in Homelessness Services.

Peer support workers have lived experiences of the challenges their clients face. While research has shown peer work can benefit recovery, the negative consequences have not been clearly addressed. This study aimed to explore the experiences of compassion fatigue amongst peer support workers in homelessness services, and the coping strategies used. An explorative qualitative design was adopted. Six peer support workers, in homelessness services, were recruited via snowball sampling. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Five themes were ident

Witness to suffering: mindfulness and compassion fatigue among traumatic bereavement volunteers and professionals.

This study used a survey to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among 41 volunteers and professionals at an agency serving the traumatically bereaved. Compassion fatigue comprises two aspects: secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Because prior research suggests that compassion satisfaction may protect against compassion fatigue, the authors hypothesized that (a) mindfulness would be positively correlated with compassion satisfaction, (b) mindfulness would be inversely correlated with compassion fatigue, and (c) there would be d

The calm before the storm? Burnout and compassion fatigue among undergraduate nursing students.

Studies have consistently highlighted the deleterious impact of burnout and compassion fatigue on professional nurses' well-being and willingness to remain in the profession. Yet, as to what extent these noxious conditions are suffered among nursing students is still unclear. In this study 436 undergraduate nursing students completed surveys assessing their experiences of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, lack of personal accomplishment, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction (factors of burnout and compassion fatigue). There were no significant differences fou

Exposure to Traumatic Events and the Experience of Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction among Prison Mental Health Staff: An Exploratory Survey.

Psychiatric morbidity is high in the prison population and prisoners with mental health problems present with complex needs. Working within the stressful prison environment and exposure to traumatic events may make prison mental health staff and correctional officers vulnerable to burnout, compassion fatigue, and reduced compassion satisfaction. This issue has not previously been explored in the prison setting. In this exploratory study, 36 mental health professionals and correctional officers were recruited from a prison in England and completed a series of questionnaires on their demographic

Structural and Organizational Dimensions of Compassion Fatigue in Pediatric Oncology Nursing: A Qualitative Study.

Pediatric oncology nursing is among the highest-intensity care specialties, exposing nurses to repeated child death and sustained emotional investment in family relationships. This occupational burden is a recognized psychosocial risk factor and a driver of compassion fatigue, burnout, and reported intention to leave, yet the organizational and educational determinants of this risk remain poorly captured by existing assessment approaches. This study investigated the lived experiences of nurses caring for terminally ill children in a pediatric onco-hematology unit and hospice ward in central It
