HEMA reduces cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Methacrylate monomers have been identified in aqueous extracts of freshly cured compomers. Both cells in the pulpal cavity and various cells of the oral mucosa can potentially be exposed to these leachables. Short-term exposure to dental monomers at relatively high concentrations induces adverse biological effects in vitro. The mechanisms involved have not been fully elucidated although involvement of various signaling pathways including ROS formation, activation of MAP-kinases and caspases has been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate potential cellular responses fo

The effect of post-curing on Vickers Hardness of four light-cure resin composite materials.

The use of post-curing ovens to post-cure light-cured resin composite restorations leads to a decrease in the negative effects of polymerization shrinkage and an increase in the hardness and wear resistance of the material. The aim of this study was to compare the Vickers Hardness (VH) of four different light-cure resin composite materials. In one group, samples of the four materials, Z100, Tetric Ceram, F2000 and Heliomolar were light-cured only, and in the other group a similar set of samples were light-cured and also post-cured in a DI 500 post-curing oven. VH vests were then carried out on

A concise review of dental sealants in caries management.

This concise review provides an update of the use of dental sealants. Dental sealants protect a tooth from caries development by providing a physical barrier to microorganism colonisation and creating a favorable environment for patients to clean. Some sealants release fluoride ions to promote remineralization. Dental sealants can be applied on pits and fissures of primary and permanent teeth to prevent and arrest early enamel caries. They are effective in caries prevention. The preventive fraction of resin sealant is up to 61% after 5 years. Dental sealants can be classified as resin, glass i

Network competition in a resin-modified glass-ionomer cement.

UNLABELLED: Attempts have been made to improve the mechanical properties and convenience of use of glass-ionomer cement (GIC) by various modifications, in particular by including a free radical-polymerizable component ("resin-modified" GIC, RMGIC). Necessarily, the one replaces part of the other, but the chemistry suggests that the formation of each network separately would inhibit diffusion and thus the other reaction. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether interference occurs between the components of an RMGIC by variation of the irradiation regime. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cylindrical specimens (6
