Biodegradation of bovine spongiform encephalopathy prions in compost.

To reduce the transmission risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy prions (PrPBSE), specified risk materials (SRM) that can harbour PrPBSE are prevented from entering the feed and food chains. As composting is one approach to disposing of SRM, we investigated the inactivation of PrPBSE in lab-scale composters over 28 days and in bin composters over 106-120 days. Lab-scale composting was conducted using 45 kg of feedlot manure with and without chicken feathers. Based on protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA), after 28 days of composting, PrPBSE seeding activity was reduced by 3-4 log10

Effectiveness of compost use in salt-affected soil.

Soil degradation and salinization are two of the utmost threat affecting agricultural areas, derived from the increasing use of low quality water and inappropriate cultural practices. The problem of low productivity of saline soils may be ascribed not only to their salt toxicity or damage caused by excess amounts of soluble salts but also arising from the lack of organic matter and available mineral nutrients especially N, P, and K. Concerns about salinization risk and environmental quality and productivity of agro-ecosystems have emphasized the need to develop management practices that mainta

Use of mature compost as filter media and the effect of packing depth on hydrogen sulfide removal from composting exhaust gases by biofiltration.

A study was conducted to investigate the utilization of mature compost as a biofilter medium for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from the exhaust gases of the composting process. Source-selected kitchen waste from municipal solid waste was composted in a reactor, and the exhaust gas was passed through a biofilter packed with a 1:4 (wet weight) mixture of mature compost and sand. Two treatments were applied under sterilized and unsterilized conditions to quantify the contribution of microbial activity. The effect of packing depth on H2S removal efficiency was also studied. A global H2S re

Composted Cattle Manure Increases Microbial Activity and Soil Fertility More Than Composted Swine Manure in a Submerged Rice Paddy.

Livestock waste composts with minimum inorganic fertilizer as a soil amendment in low-input intensive farming are a feasible agricultural practice to improve soil fertility and productivity and to mitigate soil degradation. The key benefits of the practice rely on the activities of soil microorganisms. However, the role of different livestock composts [composted cattle manure (CCM) vs. composted swine manure (CSM)] on soil microbes, their activities and the overall impact on soil fertility and productivity in a flooded paddy remains elusive. This study compares the effectiveness of CCM and CSM

Changes in physical, chemical, and microbiological properties during the two-stage co-composting of green waste with spent mushroom compost and biochar.

This research determined whether the two-stage co-composting can be used to convert green waste (GW) into a useful compost. The GW was co-composted with spent mushroom compost (SMC) (at 0%, 35%, and 55%) and biochar (BC) (at 0%, 20%, and 30%). The combined addition of SMC and BC greatly increased the nutrient contents of the compost product and also improved the compost quality in terms of composting temperature, particle-size distribution, free air space, cation exchange capacity, nitrogen transformation, organic matter degradation, humification, element contents, abundance of aerobic heterot

Bacterial-fungal interactions in the air environment of composting facilities.

Bacteria-fungi interactions (BFIs) shape ecosystem processes and influence human health, yet critical gaps in airborne BFIs continue to obscure both the ecological functions and health risks of airborne microbes. In this study, 41 paired air and compost samples were collected from five composting facilities. Bacterial and fungal communities were characterized by Illumina 16S/ITS sequencing, inter- and intra-kingdom links were identified through co-occurrence networks, and a neutral community model was applied to infer assembly processes. Our results showed a significant positive correlation be

Concentration and speciation of heavy metals during water hyacinth composting.

The Tessier sequential extraction method was employed to investigate the changes in heavy metals speciation (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr) during water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) composting. Results showed that, the contents of total metals concentration were increased during the composting process. The largest proportion of metals was found in the residual fraction which was in more stable form and is consequently considered unavailable for plant uptake. Reducible and oxidizable fractions of Ni, Pb and Cd were not found in all trials during water hyacinth composting. The concentrati

Green house gas emissions from composting and mechanical biological treatment.

In order to carry out life-cycle assessments as a basis for far-reaching decisions about environmentally sustainable waste treatment, it is important that the input data be reliable and sound. A comparison of the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with each solid waste treatment option is essential. This paper addresses GHG emissions from controlled composting processes. Some important methodological prerequisites for proper measurement and data interpretation are described, and a common scale and dimension of emission data are proposed so that data from different studies can

Challenges and Control Strategies of Odor Emission from Composting Operation.

Composting is a biological decomposition process that occurs from microbial progression, which brings about the degradation and stabilization of various organic waste into compost. During composting, the emission of undesirable odor adversely affects compost quality and causes environmental deterioration. Also, odor emission from composting adversely affects human health and well-being. Ammonia (NH3), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are major components of odorous gases responsible for unpleasant odor. Physiological parameters such as pH, temperature, and aeration

Effect of aeration rate on composting of penicillin mycelial dreg.

Pilot scale experiments with forced aeration were conducted to estimate effects of aeration rates on the performance of composting penicillin mycelial dreg using sewage sludge as inoculation. Three aeration rates of 0.15, 0.50 and 0.90L/(min·kg) organic matter (OM) were examined. The principal physicochemical parameters were monitored during the 32day composting period. Results showed that the higher aeration rate of 0.90L/(min·kg) did not corresponded to a longer thermophilic duration and higher rates of OM degradation; but the lower aeration rate of 0.15L/(min·kg) did induce an accumulation

Domestic waste composting facilities: a review of human health risks.

In the management of municipal solid waste (MSW), the sorting-composting approach presents many advantages. However, since MSW contains a number of chemical and biological agents, the compost should not be necessarily a harmless product. These contaminants may expose different populations to health hazards, ranging from the composting plant workers to the consumers of vegetable products grown in soils treated with compost. Recent information concerning health risks derived from occupational exposure to organic dusts, bioaerosols and microorganisms in MSW composting plants is here reviewed. An

Effects of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, biochar and spent mushroom substrate on compost maturity and gaseous emissions during pig manure composting.

This study used a laboratory-scale system to investigate the effects of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (CaMgP), biochar, and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) on compost maturity and gasous emissions during pig manure composting. The results showed that the addition of CaMgP, Biochar or SMS had no negative effect on the quality and maturity of compost, and all three additives could reduce the emissions of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), dimethyl sulfide (Me2S) and dimethyl disulfide (Me2SS). Among them, the effect of adding CaMgP on NH3 emission reduction was the most obvious, redu

Thermophilic pig manure compost as an additive for sewage sludge composting: humification efficiency and changes in heavy metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes.

Thermophilic livestock manure compost harbors microbes with vigorous metabolic activity, making it a promising natural inoculant for composting systems. However, there has been no documented application of thermophilic livestock manure compost as an additive in sewage sludge composting. The impacts of this strategy on shifts in heavy metal speciation and the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during sludge composting remain poorly understood. In this study, thermophilic pig manure compost materials (TM) were used as additives and incorporated into sewage sludge compo

Machine-learning-assisted process interpretation of composting time across composting systems involving multiple organic wastes: Key explanatory contributions of temperature evolution during the cooling-maturation phase.

Composting time across organic waste systems is associated with feedstock composition, operating conditions, and stage-specific temperature evolution. Conventional approaches have difficulty characterizing nonlinear variation among multiple process variables. This study developed a machine learning-assisted framework to identify process features associated with composting time in heterogeneous, multi-source composting systems and to characterize their structural associations. This study compared six machine learning models. XGBoost showed the strongest ability to characterize nonlinear associa
