Prediction of thoracic and lumbar vertebral body compressive strength: correlations with bone mineral density and vertebral region.

The bone density of thoracolumbar vertebral columns (T1 to L5) from 18 individuals was measured using quantitative computed tomography and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Three hundred six isolated vertebral bodies were tested in a materials test device to determine their compressive strength. Between T1 and L5 the mean segmental increase in bone mineral content was 0.3 g, while the corresponding mean decrease in trabecular density was 4.7 HU. Midvertebral body cross-sectional area increased by an average of 46 mm2 per segment and the mean segmental increase in compressive strength was 0.17

Deep-Freezing Temperatures During Irradiation Preserves the Compressive Strength of Human Cortical Bone Allografts: A Cadaver Study.

BACKGROUND: Gamma irradiation, which minimizes the risk of infectious disease transmission when human bone allograft is used, has been found to negatively affect its biomechanical properties. However, in those studies, the deep-freezing temperature during irradiation was not necessarily maintained during transportation and sterilization, which may have affected the findings. Prior reports have also suggested that controlled deep freezing may mitigate the detrimental effects of irradiation on the mechanical properties of bone allograft. QUESTION/PURPOSE: Does a controlled deep-freezing tempera

Compressive strength and microstructure of eco-friendly brick waste-based geopolymers under partial and full immersion in seawater.

The production of Portland cement has a significant environmental impact due to high energy consumption, intensive raw material extraction, and substantial CO2 emissions. Geopolymers represent a more sustainable alternative, particularly when produced from industrial by-products, as they exhibit a reduced environmental footprint. This study investigates the compressive strength and microstructural behavior of sustainable geopolymers produced with ceramic brick waste (BW) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) under different exposure conditions, including air curing, water immersion,

Mechanical assessment with data-driven hybrid machine learning-based optimization of compressive strength of sustainable biochar-concrete composite.

The rapid rise in global population and industrial activity has intensified environmental challenges, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from the cement and concrete industry. Biochar, a carbon-rich byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, has emerged as a promising solution for sustainable construction by enhancing carbon sequestration and improving mechanical performance when partially substituting cement. This study integrates experimental evidence with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques to evaluate the compressive strength, cost-efficiency, and carbon footprint of biochar-incorporat

Experimental study on the compressive strength of fixed prosthetic restorations on tooth preparations with or without horizontal preparation.

Fixed prosthetic restorations, particularly those made entirely of zirconia, are widely used in clinical dental practice for the restoration of natural teeth. Their success largely depends on the design of the tooth preparation, especially the type of finish line, as well as the restoration's ability to withstand occlusal forces during mastication. Over 12 months, a total of 21 extracted teeth were initially collected, from which six were selected for this study. To achieve the objective of the study, three teeth were prepared with a horizontal finish line (shoulder), and the remaining three w

Ex vivo estimation of thoracolumbar vertebral body compressive strength: the relative contributions of bone densitometry and vertebral morphometry.

The estimation of vertebral fracture risk in individuals with suspected osteopenia is commonly based on measurements of lumbar spine bone density. The efficacy of vertebral size and deformity, as assessed by vertebral morphometry, in the prediction of fractures has been less studied. In an ex vivo investigation the regional relationships between vertebral size, vertebral deformity, bone density and compressive strength throughout the thoracolumbar spine were examined. In 16 vertebral columns (T1-L5) the bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) of each segment were measured usi

Reliable estimation of the confined compressive strength of FRP-confined circular concrete columns using an ANFIS-based model.

Reliable estimation of the confined compressive strength of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-wrapped concrete is essential for the safe design and assessment of strengthened structural members. This study proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) model to predict the confined compressive strength of FRP-confined circular concrete cylinders. The model is trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm, combined with an early-stopping strategy, to enhance generalization and prevent overfitting. Four physically meaningful parameters-unconfined compressive strength, c

Enhanced Estimation of Axial Compressive Strength for CFRP Based on Microscale Numerical Simulation and the Response Surface Method.

Compressive strength is one of the most important properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). In this study, a new method for predicting the axial compressive strength of CFRP using the response surface method is developed. We focused on a microbuckling model to predict the compressive strength of unidirectional fiber composites. For the microbuckling model, axial shear properties are required. To obtain the compressive strength for various material properties, we perform individual shear tests and numerical simulations, but these require enormous computational costs and extended ti

Large Lytic Defects Produce Kinematic Instability and Loss of Compressive Strength in Human Spines: An in Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: In patients with spinal metastases, kinematic instability is postulated to be a predictor of pathologic vertebral fractures. However, the relationship between this kinematic instability and the loss of spinal strength remains unknown. METHODS: Twenty-four 3-level thoracic and lumbar segments from 8 cadaver spines from female donors aged 47 to 69 years were kinematically assessed in axial compression (180 N) and axial compression with a flexion or extension moment (7.5 Nm). Two patterns of lytic defects were mechanically simulated: (1) a vertebral body defect, corresponding to Tane
