Circulatory effects of internal jugular vein compression: a computer simulation study.

The effects of compression of the internal jugular veins and the inferior vena cava are simulated using an equivalent electronic circuit, which included simulation of cardiocirculatory phenomena and special features of the cerebral circulation. Compression of the inferior vena cava resulted in a profound decrease in cardiac output (from 4.5 to 1.51min(-1)) and arterial pressure (from 140/85 to 50/35 mmHg). Compression of the internal jugular veins resulted in a negligible decrease in cardiac output and arterial pressure, with a cerebral blood flow that was slightly decreased. Cerebral capillar

Computer simulation of blood flow patterns in arteries of various geometries.

The purpose of this study is to illustrate the application of computer simulation to the study of blood flow through arteries and to demonstrate the relationship between geometry of the vessels and local flow patterns. A finite element computer program was developed to simulate steady and pulsatile blood flow by solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations. The accuracy of the computational method has been confirmed by comparing the numeric results to analytic solutions and to published experimental data from physical models. The results are presented as plots of the velocity vectors, st

Integration of mechanics and biology in computer simulation of bone remodeling.

Bone remodeling is a complex physiological process that spans across multiple spatial and temporal scales and is regulated by both mechanical and hormonal cues. An imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation in the process of bone remodeling may lead to various bone pathologies. One powerful and non-invasive approach to gain new insights into mechano-adaptive bone remodeling is computer modeling and simulation. Recent findings in bone physiology and advances in computer modeling have provided a unique opportunity to study the integration of mechanics and biology in bone remodeling. Ou

Safe trajectory for an occipital condyle screw: A computer simulation study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of posterior occipital condyle screw (OCS) placement analysis of the safe trajectory area for screw insertion. METHODS: Computed tomographic angiography scans of patients (46 males and 27 females) with normal occipitocervical structures were obtained consecutively. Vertebral artery (VA)-occiput distance <4.0 mm was defined as "unfeasible" for OCS fixation, and occipital-atlas angulation was measured to assess the feasibility of screw placement. Next, the placement of 3.5 mm diameter OCS was simulated, the probability of brea

Computer simulation of cervical tissue response to a hydraulic dilator device.

BACKGROUND: Classical mechanical dilators for cervical dilation are associated with various complications, such as uterine perforation, cervical laceration, infections and intraperitoneal hemorrhage. A new medical device called continuous controllable balloon dilator (CCBD) was constructed to make a significant reduction in all of the side effects of traditional mechanical dilation. METHOD: In this study we investigated numerically the cervical canal tissue response for Hegar and CCBD using our poroelastic finite element model and in-house software development. Distal radius osteotomy with volar locking plates based on computer simulation.

BACKGROUND: Corrective osteotomy using dorsal plates and structural bone graft usually has been used for treating symptomatic distal radius malunions. However, the procedure is technically demanding and requires an extensive dorsal approach. Residual deformity is a relatively frequent complication of this technique. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated the clinical applicability of a three-dimensional osteotomy using computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques with volar locking plates for distal radius malunions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients with metaphyseal radius malunions were t

Does three-dimensional computer simulation improve results of scaphoid nonunion surgery?

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of the three-dimensional computer simulations in scaphoid nonunion surgery. Seven consecutive clinical patients with scaphoid nonunion at the middle third comprised the study group. Surface models of the scaphoid were constructed on the computer using computed tomography data of the bilateral wrists in neutral position. The distal and proximal fragments of the nonunion model were matched to the mirror image of the contralateral scaphoid model. The rotation of the distal fragment relative to the proximal fragment was calculated, and red

Computer simulation of glenohumeral and patellofemoral subluxation. Estimating pathological articular contact.

Analytic stereophotogrammetry and an interactive computer graphics program were used to obtain first order assessments of joint contact patterns in patellofemoral and glenohumeral joints, simulating normal and abnormal articulations. Precise (90 microns accuracy) computer graphic representations of the humeral head, glenoid, patella, and femoral articular surfaces were obtained from cadaver knees and shoulders. These surface representations were then manipulated into an articulated position, and joint contact areas computed by a proximity criterion. Pathologic states were then simulated, and c

Simulation Training for Residents Focused on Mechanical Ventilation: A Randomized Trial Using Mannequin-Based Versus Computer-Based Simulation.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in knowledge regarding mechanical ventilation (MV), in particular lung-protective ventilation strategies, have been shown to reduce mortality. However, the translation of these advances in knowledge into better therapeutic performance in real-life clinical settings continues to lag. High-fidelity simulation with a mannequin allows students to interact in lifelike situations; this may be a valuable addition to traditional didactic teaching. The purpose of this study is to compare computer-based and mannequin-based approaches for training residents on MV. METHODS: This pr

A hybrid simulation framework for computer simulation and modelling studies of grating-based x-ray phase-contrast images.

Clinical studies performed using computer simulation are inexpensive, flexible methods that can be used to study aspects of a proposed imaging technique prior to a full clinical study. Typically, lesions are simulated into (experimental) data to assess the clinical potential of new methods or algorithms. In grating-based phase-contrast imaging (GB-PCI), full wave simulations are, however, computationally expensive due to the high periodicity of the gratings and therefore not practically applicable when large data sets are required. This work describes the development of a hybrid modelling plat

Computer simulation of surgical interventions for the treatment of refractory pulmonary hypertension.

This paper describes computer models of three interventions used for treating refractory pulmonary hypertension (RPH). These procedures create either an atrial septal defect, a ventricular septal defect or, in the case of a Potts shunt, a patent ductus arteriosus. The aim in all three cases is to generate a right-to-left shunt, allowing for either pressure or volume unloading of the right side of the heart in the setting of right ventricular failure, while maintaining cardiac output. These shunts are created, however, at the expense of introducing de-oxygenated blood into the systemic circulat

Facilitation of dependent transfers with functional neuromuscular stimulation: a computer simulation study.

A two-part simulation process was developed to investigate the facilitation of vertical patient lifts with functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). First, external lifting forces representing caregiver assistance were applied to a 3D musculoskeletal model representing the patient and optimized to enforce a specific lifting trajectory during a forward dynamic simulation. The process was repeated with and without the activation of the knee, hip, and trunk extensor muscles of the patient model to represent contractions of the paralyzed muscles gener

Asymmetric Polymersomes from an Oil-in-Oil Emulsion: A Computer Simulation Study.

Asymmetric vesicles are valuable for understanding and mimicking cell and practical biomedicine applications. Recently, a very straightforward methodology for fabricating asymmetric polymersome was developed by Lodge's group through the coassembly of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) and polybutadiene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-b-PEO) block copolymers at the interface of a polystyrene/polybutadiene/chloroform (PS/PB/CHCl3) emulsion. However, the in-depth microscopic mechanism for the formation of asymmetric polymersomes remains unclear. To address this issue, in this article, the c

Dynamic high-resolution computer simulation of isotachophoretic enantiomer separation and zone stability.

The development of electrophoretic computer models and their use for simulation of electrophoretic processes has increased significantly during the last few years. Recently, GENTRANS and SIMUL5 were extended with algorithms that describe chemical equilibria between solutes and a buffer additive in a fast 1:1 interaction process, an approach that enables simulation of the electrophoretic separation of enantiomers. For acidic cationic systems with sodium and H3 0(+) as leading and terminating components, respectively, acetic acid as counter component, charged weak bases as samples, and a neutral

Computer simulation analysis of normal and abnormal development of the mammalian diaphragm.

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect with significant morbidity and mortality. Knowledge of diaphragm morphogenesis and the aberrations leading to CDH is limited. Although classical embryologists described the diaphragm as arising from the septum transversum, pleuroperitoneal folds (PPF), esophageal mesentery and body wall, animal studies suggest that the PPF is the major, if not sole, contributor to the muscular diaphragm. Recently, a posterior defect in the PPF has been identified when the teratogen nitrofen is used to induce CDH in fetal rodents. We describe u

Computer simulation of non-newtonian effects on blood flow in large arteries.

The influence of viscoelastic effects on blood flow in large arteries is studied numerically. The description of the blood flow uses the conservation of mass and momentum and a constitutive relation of Jeffreys' type (Oldroyd-B) and appropriate relations to describe the shear thinning behaviour. The steady flow studies are carried out in an axisymmetric tube with a local constriction modelling a stenosed blood vessel and in a three-dimensional 90 degrees curved tube. The numerical approach applies a decoupled technique where the computation of kinematics and stresses is separated. The governin

Strategies to decrease tuberculosis in us homeless populations: a computer simulation model.

CONTEXT: The rate of tuberculosis (TB) among US homeless persons may be 20 times that of the general adult population. Studies suggest that the majority of urban homeless TB cases are attributable to ongoing transmission of TB. Optimal TB-control strategies in both chronically and transiently homeless populations are not known. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of TB-control strategies on projected TB cases and deaths in US homeless populations using a computer-based simulation model. DESIGN, SETTING, AND POPULATION: The US general population and a theoretical population of 2 million homeles

[Visual image in high ametropia. Computer-assisted simulation with optic ray calculation].

PURPOSE: A computer program developed by the authors allows to calculate the path of light rays coming from an object through all the refractive surfaces of a Gullstrand model eye until it reaches the retina. METHOD: The program calculates several hundred light rays for every point of a given object. A menue allows to modify optical and morphological parameters in an interactive way. For instance, the indices of refraction, the radii of the cornea and of the cristalline lens, as well as the length of the bulbus can be modified. Further, one can add seeing aids such as eye glasses or a contact
