PURPOSE: Virtual surgery system can provide us a realistic and immersive training environment, in which haptic force-feedback gives operators 'touching feeling.' Appropriate deformation models of soft and hard tissues are required for the achievement of real-time haptic feedback. To improve accuracy of modeling and haptic feedback simulation for maxillofacial virtual surgery, mechanical characteristics of soft and hard tissues should be explored.
METHODS: Craniofacial soft tissues from one male and female cadavers were divided into two layers: skin and muscle. Maxillofacial tissues were divid

Stroke survivors with upper-limb impairments often have difficulty using conventional computer interfaces, which limits their ability to perform daily computer-related activities independently. This study developed a wearable multimodal assistive interface that enables computer interaction through a virtual cursor. A lightweight headband equipped with electrooculography (EOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) was used to acquire multimodal signals for interaction control. EOG signals were processed to detect voluntary blinks to generate clicks, head movement

An essential component of modern musculoskeletal rehabilitation systems is treadmills of various sizes, the control of which may rely either on manual adjustment of treadmill speed, fixed for the entire training session, or on automatic regulation based on analysis of the user's movements and velocity. The aim of this study was to experimentally compare the control functions of an adaptive treadmill designed for musculoskeletal rehabilitation and to assess the influence of the hardware configuration and tracking systems on user stability and the smoothness of transient processes. Brain-Computer interface (BCI), which translates neural activities into commands for external devices, holds significant promise for clinical rehabilitation and assisted movement for individuals with motor disabilities. Among various BCI paradigms, the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based BCI garnered considerable attention due to its relatively stable and high-speed communication capabilities. However, a notable portion of the population, referred to as BCI illiteracy, struggles to effectively control BCI systems due to their inability to generate or modulate the neural patterns

We introduce a skin-friendly electronic system that enables human-computer interaction (HCI) for swallowing training in dysphagia rehabilitation. For an ergonomic HCI, we utilize a soft, highly compliant ("skin-like") electrode, which addresses critical issues of an existing rigid and planar electrode combined with a problematic conductive electrolyte and adhesive pad. The skin-like electrode offers a highly conformal, user-comfortable interaction with the skin for long-term wearable, high-fidelity recording of swallowing electromyograms on the chin. BACKGROUND: Physical and occupational therapists provide routine care for manual wheelchair users and are responsible for training and assessing the quality of transfers. These transfers can produce large loads on the upper extremity joints if improper sitting-pivot-technique is used. Methods to assess quality of transfers include the Transfer Assessment Instrument, a clinically validated tool derived from quantitative biomechanical features; however, adoption of this tool is low due to the complex usage requirements and speed of typical transfers.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to

Body machine interfaces (BMIs) are used by people with severe motor disabilities to control external devices, but they also offer the opportunity to focus on rehabilitative goals. In this study we introduced in a clinical setting a BMI that was integrated by the therapists in the rehabilitative treatments of 2 spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects for 5 weeks. The BMI mapped the user's residual upper body mobility onto the two coordinates of a cursor on a screen. By controlling the cursor, the user engaged in playing computer games. The BMI allowed the mapping between body and cursor spaces to be

Military training increases tibial density and size. Female sex hormones may influence the adaption of bone to loading, but it is unknown if women using different hormonal contraceptives adapt similarly to military training. One hundred and sixteen women (57 women not using hormonal contraceptives [non-users], 38 combined oral contraceptive pill [COCP] users, 21 depot medroxyprogesterone acetate [DMPA] users) completed this study. Tibial volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and geometry were measured by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (4 %, 14 %, 38 %, and 66 % sites) at the star

BACKGROUND: With the increasing capacity of personal computers more and more multimedia training programs are becoming available which make use of these possibilities. Computer-based presentation is usually interesting because it is visually attractive. However, the extent to which computer-based training programs correspond to international standards of quality of software ergonomics has never been the subject of systematic research. Another question is how much these programs motivate learning and what increase in knowledge can be achieved by using them.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a multime

Modern biology often relies on the analysis of entire sets of molecules (omics). A subset of omics uses nucleic acid sequencing to reconstruct genomes and profile gene expression. Novel findings and existing data are contextualized by databases, which have been growing exponentially due to falling sequencing costs and increased computing access. The increasing accessibility of omics has led to rapid adoption and widespread self-training via open-access tools. In this training environment new users (many of whom are students also applying computing for the first time) are confronted with Teraby

Ultrasound education traditionally involves theoretical and practical training on patients or on simulators; however, difficulty accessing training equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for home-based training systems. Due to the prohibitive cost of ultrasound probes, few medical students have access to the equipment required for at home training. Our proof of concept study focused on the development and assessment of the technical feasibility and training performance of an at-home training solution to teach the basics of interpreting and generating ultrasound data.
