Challenges of higher education related to e-learning in developing countries during COVID-19 spread: a review of the perspectives of students, instructors, policymakers, and ICT experts.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about many critical issues in all aspects such as economy, environment, health, and lifestyle, but people always try to find some response to crisis in different conditions. E-learning is defined as an elaborate response aiming at continuing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. It seems that developed countries have established and adjusted their technological infrastructures for the transition from a face-to-face education to a digital one. In contrast, developing countries were not completely prepared for this transition. Improper and deficient technological

INSPIRE: a healthcare-specialized instructional design methodology for high-stakes e-learning in the era of artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare e-learning operates under pressures that are difficult to satisfy simultaneously: it must be evidence-based, regulator-acceptable, clinically credible, and delivered on time. Established instructional design models, including ADDIE, the Successive Approximation Model, Dick and Carey, and Kemp, were not developed with these combined demands in mind and predate the routine use of artificial intelligence (AI) in content production. The field lacks a methodology that combines the structured governance required for regulated healthcare training, particularly in postgraduate m

Retrospective study of online ligation student practice incorporating flipped learning into e-learning.

PURPOSE: Flipped learning has been applied in various fields, including medical professional education. E-learning is compatible with flipped learning; however, it is considered to be unsuitable for providing training on surgical techniques. In this study, we retrospectively examined the ligation performance of online students who underwent training with flipped learning incorporated into e-learning. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of the ligation practices of online students at the Department of General Surgery from March 2020 to June 2021. The subjects included 134 fourth- and f

An e-learning pediatric cardiology curriculum for Pediatric Postgraduate trainees in Rwanda: implementation and evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Access to pediatric sub-specialty training is a critical unmet need in many resource-limited settings. In Rwanda, only two pediatric cardiologists are responsible for the country's clinical care of a population of 12 million, along with the medical education of all pediatric trainees. To strengthen physician training opportunities, we developed an e-learning curriculum in pediatric cardiology. This curriculum aimed to "flip the classroom", allowing residents to learn key pediatric cardiology concepts digitally before an in-person session with the specialist, thus efficiently utiliz

3D-brain 2.0--narrowing the gap between personal computers and high end workstations.

UNLABELLED: Recent advances in personal computer hardware and software have pushed the graphic capacity of these easier to use and, more importantly, cheaper computers to a level approximating the current standard of high end workstations. The interactivity and graphic complexity of a modern PC is rapidly approaching the current standard on Silicon Graphics (although with respect to texture mapping, the SGI is still ahead of the PCs). The modern medical student laboring under increasingly higher demands with respect to versatility, not only in basic science and traditional medical knowledge, i

Virtual reality in endonasal surgery.

Virtual environments provide a new dimension of graphic simulation. The interaction between the human and the computer is now intuitive for the user. The use of virtual reality (VR) gives the user the feeling of participating in a (computer generated) scenario very much like reality. This feeling is an essential requirement for simulation of surgical interventions using digital data. Especially in the fields of sinus and skull-base surgery, computer assisted simulation could present a valuable and effective alternative method for honing endoscopic skills. Traditionally, surgeons gain experienc

Creating accessible browser-based interactive content for teaching physiology and pharmacology: options for nonprogrammers.

Although interactive software has long been employed to complement traditional lecture and laboratory classes, instructors have typically been limited to premade programs produced by others with significant programming experience. Furthermore, many existing programs have limited platform cross-compatibility, with few compatible with the most ubiquitous and accessible device in a typical classroom, the mobile phone. In addition to advances in large language model-assisted programming, there has been a boom in the popularity of HTML5/JavaScript-based video game development software targeted towa

Assistive technology and learning disabilities: today's realities and tomorrow's promises.

Many forms of technology, both "high" and "low," can help individuals with learning disabilities capitalize on their strengths and bypass, or compensate for, their disabilities. This article surveys the current status of assistive technology for this population and reflects on future promises and potential problems. In addition, a model is presented for conceptualizing assistive technology in terms of the types of barriers it helps persons with disabilities to surmount. Several current technologies are described and the research supporting their effectiveness reviewed: word processing, compute

Clinical records after asynchronous and synchronous e-learning courses: a multi-method randomised controlled trial on students' performance and experience.

BACKGROUND: Clinical Record (CR) writing is a fundamental skill for healthcare professionals, but the best e-learning methods for teaching it remain unstudied. Therefore, we investigated speech therapy students' differences in the quality production of CR at the placement and their experience after following asynchronous or synchronous e-learning courses. METHODS: A multi-method randomised controlled trial. Fifty speech therapist students were equally and randomly divided into two groups attending asynchronous or synchronous e-learning classes to learn how to write a CR. The quality of the CR

Training reading fluency: is it important to practice reading aloud and is generalization possible?

Outcomes of three different types of computerized training in sub-lexical items (word-initial consonant clusters) on reading speed for 39 German-speaking poor readers in Grades 2 and 3 were evaluated. A phonological-orthographic association group, a reading aloud group, and a combined group were compared in performance with an untrained control group. During short-term training, the intervention groups showed higher gains than the control group in reading speed of the trained sub-lexical items and of the words containing the trained segments. No differences were found between the intervention

Force interactions in laparoscopic simulations: haptic rendering of soft tissues.

Research in the area of computer assisted surgery and surgical simulation has mainly focused on developing 3D geometrical models of the human body from 2D medical images, visualization of internal structures for educational and preoperative surgical planning purposes, and graphical display of soft tissue behavior in real time. Conveying to the surgeon the touch and force sensations with the use of haptic interfaces has not been investigated in detail. We have developed a set of haptic rendering algorithms for simulating "surgical instrument--soft tissue" interactions. Although the focus of the
