EVALUATION OF THYROID RADIATION DOSE USING CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) became common in various dental specialties over the past decade. This technology is used by dental professionals regarding the investigation of maxillofacial structures. Due to the diagnostic quality and possibility of 3D view, this method has become an additional method of human exposure to ionizing radiation. This study aims to evaluate the amount of ionizing radiation absorbed by thyroid gland using CBCT. Measurements were performed by LiF dosimeters (TLD-100), positioned on a phantom for head and neck, which was irradiated by Newtom 3G-CBCT. The averag

[Clinical application of cone-beam computed tomography in sialolithiasis diagnosis].

Diagnosis of sialolithiasis usually needs the combination of clinical and imaging-based examination. The use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with sialolithiasis has been increasing in dental practice in recent years. CBCT has some advantages in the diagnosis and treatment of sialolithiasis. However, CBCT should not be considered as the first choice for the diagnosis and treatment of sialolithiasis, and it is suitable to be used in the case of complex sialolithiasis which can not be diagnosed by traditional imaging methods. The research progress of the use of CBCT in the dia

Measurement of skin dose from cone-beam computed tomography imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To measure surface skin dose from various cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanners using point-dosimeters. MATERIALS & METHODS: A head anthropomorphic phantom was used with nanoDOT optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters (Landauer Corp., Glenwood, IL) attached to various anatomic landmarks. The phantom was scanned using multiple exposure protocols for craniofacial evaluations in three different CBCT units and a conventional x-ray imaging system. The dosimeters were calibrated for each of the scan protocols on the different imaging systems. Peak skin dose and surface

Streaking artifacts reduction in four-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an "on-board" x-ray imaging device integrated into a radiation therapy system has recently been made available for patient positioning, target localization, and adaptive treatment planning. One of the challenges for gantry mounted image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) systems is the slow acquisition of projections for cone-beam CT (CBCT), which makes them sensitive to any patient motion during the scans. Aiming at motion artifact reduction, four-dimensional CBCT (4D CBCT) techniques have been introduced, where a surrogate for the target's motion profi

Artifacts of orthodontic materials on cone beam computed tomography images.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the artifact expression of various materials used in orthodontic treatment on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. It was hypothesized that three-dimensional (3D) printing resins and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), owing to their relatively low density and low effective atomic number, would generate fewer artifacts than conventional materials. METHODS: Ten orthodontic materials and an empty phantom control (Temporary CB, Permanent Crown, Biomed Clear, Glass Ionomer Cement, Composite, Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cement, PEEK, Titanium Grade 2, Stai

Anatomical variations of sphenoid sinus on cone beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical approach to the sphenoid sinus (SS) is one of the most challenging aspects of endoscopic surgery due to its proximity to critical structures. To minimize risks, computed tomography (CT) aids in navigational guidance. Although cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has lower contrast resolution, it offers improved precision, reduced radiation exposure, and faster imaging, making it a viability as a preoperative tool. METHODS: We randomly selected 75 patients from 707 who underwent CBCT between January and December 2023. Two observers evaluated SS anatomy with consensus

Weightbearing Cone-Beam Computed Tomography of Acute Ankle Syndesmosis Injuries.

Syndesmotic injuries are common, but only a subset of these injuries are unstable. A noninvasive tool for identifying instability would aid in the selection of patients for surgery. Weightbearing computed tomography (CT) data have been reported for healthy patients, but there are limited data on unstable syndesmoses. We evaluated the syndesmotic area of arthroscopically proven unstable ankles after acute injury. This is a prospective comparative study of consecutive patients recruited to a weightbearing CT database. Thirty-nine patients were included for analysis with arthroscopically proven u

Evaluation of canalis basilaris medianus using cone-beam computed tomography.

The aim of this report is to present two cases of canalis basilaris medianus as identified on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the base of the skull. The CBCT data sets were sent for radiographic consultation. In both cases, multi-planar views revealed an osseous defect in the base of the skull in the clivus region, the sagittal view showed a unilateral, well-defined, non-corticated, track-like low-attenuation osseous defect in the clivus. The appearance of the defect was highly reminiscent of a fracture of the clivus. The borders of osseous defect were smooth, and no other radiographic

Cone-beam computed tomography: time for an evidence-based approach.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an imaging technology that has revolutionised dental imaging in the last decade. Although of particular value to specialists performing implant treatment, it is increasingly being adopted by general dental practitioners. As the radiation dose is higher than that of conventional radiography, it is important to consider its diagnostic efficacy for the common tasks performed in general dental practice, such as caries diagnosis, endodontics and the detection of periapical pathosis. Any new imaging technique needs to have proven advantages over existing techn

Comparison between conventional and cone-beam computed tomography-generated cephalograms.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is becoming established as an alternative and, in many aspects, superior radiographic technique to conventional radiography in orthodontics. However, cephalometric analysis is still an important tool in relation to treatment planning because 3-dimensional analyses are still not established. The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric measurements performed on conventional cephalograms with those on CBCT-synthesized images. METHODS: Three observers digitized landmarks used for the Björk analysis on conventional lateral cephalograms and
