Advances in pharmacotherapy for allergic conjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: Allergy is the fifth leading group of chronic diseases, affecting as much as 40% of the first-world population. Its pathophysiology has a genetic component, and is driven by the immune system's sensitized response to antigens and environmental factors. As research continues to uncover the mediators responsible for ocular allergy, the development of novel drugs should progress. AREAS COVERED: A literature review of allergic conjunctivitis, ocular allergy and their treatment was performed using PubMed and Medline. Additional information is also included from clinicaltrials.gov and

Evaluation of allergic conjunctivitis by thermography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate ocular surface temperature in assessing the efficacy of anti-allergic eye drops. METHODS: Thirteen asymptomatic patients (24.7 ± 2.8 years) with proven seasonal allergic conjunctivitis due to cedar pollen were studied. A 0.025% levocabastine ophthalmic suspension was instilled in one eye (levocabastine eye) and artificial tears in the other eye (artificial tear eye) in a masked fashion 10 min prior to a conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC). Then, a drop of cedar pollen solution was dropped into the conjunctival sac to induce the allergic reaction. The surface temperature

An algorithm for the management of allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis has been reported to be increasing in prevalence in the United States. It significantly impacts patient quality of life and reduces their productivity. It has been noted that nasal and ocular symptoms are equally bothersome in the majority of patients. Despite the development of new therapeutic interventions, ocular allergy is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. This article outlines current best practices regarding diagnosis and treatment of allergic conjunctivitis; suggests criteria for referral to a colleague with different expertise; and provides an algorithm for

Consensus document on allergic conjunctivitis (DECA).

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is an inflammatory disease of the conjunctiva caused mainly by an IgE-mediated mechanism. It is the most common type of ocular allergy. Despite being the most benign form of conjunctivitis, AC has a considerable effect on patient quality of life, reduces work productivity, and increases health care costs. No consensus has been reached on its classification, diagnosis, or treatment. Consequently, the literature provides little information on its natural history, epidemiological data are scarce, and it is often difficult to ascertain its true morbidity. The main obje

Tear tryptase levels and allergic conjunctivitis.

We measured tryptase, a neutral protease stored in the secretory granules of mast cells, by solid-phase radioimmunoassay in tears of 12 subjects with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) during remission phases, nine subjects with seasonal or perennial allergic conjunctivitis, and eight healthy controls. Mean values of tear tryptase levels were significantly (P < 0.02) increased in VKC patients (14.5 +/- 13 micrograms/l) when compared to those measured in patients with seasonal or perennial allergic conjunctivitis (0.6 +/- 0.1 microgram/l) and in controls (3.3 +/- 3.2 micrograms/l). Respiratory syncytial virus and allergic conjunctivitis.

The pathogenesis of allergic conjunctivitis is largely conjectural. We investigated the possible involvement of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a ubiquitous respiratory pathogen, in the development of allergic conjunctivitis through immune mechanisms. Brush cytology technique was used to obtain conjunctival cells from 30 patients with allergic conjunctivitis and 20 controls. Samples were assayed for the presence of RSV sequences with the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and the nested polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR). In order to further investigate the relatio

Evaluation on the clinical findings and allergological factors of local allergic conjunctivitis and non-local allergic conjunctivitis.

We previously reported that 16.9% of allergic conjunctival disease cases were local allergic conjunctivitis (LAC). We therefore retrospectively investigated the pathological and clinical changes of LAC. Tear, conjunctival, and blood tests were performed on 313 patients with allergic conjunctival disease. A total of 313 patients with allergic conjunctival disease were surveyed using tear, conjunctival, and blood tests and QOL Questionnaire. In addition, we retrospectively examined the clinical test results of patients who agreed to re-examination more than one year after being diagnosed with LA

Primary conjunctival amyloidosis and allergic conjunctivitis.

Primary conjunctival amyloidosis is a rare disease of unknown origin, secondary to the deposit of amyloid material within the conjunctiva itself, producing a tumour. In the case presented, the concurrence of allergic conjunctivitis and chronic eye scratching could be triggers of the excessive production of immunoglobulins. The deposit of insoluble immunoglobulin light chains located within the conjunctiva itself causes this conjunctival mass.
