Envenomation by Steatoda borealis (Araneae: Theridiidae) in Connecticut, USA.

We report a case of envenomation by Steatoda borealis (Hentz, 1850) in Connecticut in late spring 2021. The bitten subject was a 60-yr-old female Caucasian. The bite occurred upon disturbing some books in her basement. She reported a painful stinging bite on her finger followed by the formation of an erythematous macule at the site of the bite which was gone the next day. There was no sign of necrosis. The spider was recovered directly at that time. The victim reported that later that night she experienced heart palpitations. This is the first report of envenomation by S. borealis, a common sp

Rabies in a Dog Imported from Egypt - Connecticut, 2017.

In 2007, the United States successfully eliminated canine rabies virus variant. Globally, however, dogs remain the principal source of human rabies infections. Since 2007, three cases of canine rabies virus variant were reported in dogs imported into the United States, one each from India (2007), Iraq (2008), and Egypt (2015) (1-3). On December 20, 2017, a dog imported into the United States from Egypt was identified with rabies, representing the second case from Egypt in 3 years. An Egyptian-based animal rescue organization delivered four dogs from Cairo, Egypt, to a flight parent (a person s

Association Between Sporadic Legionellosis and River Systems in Connecticut.

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of sporadic legionnaires' disease in Connecticut since 1999, but the exact reasons for this are unknown. Therefore, there is a growing need to understand the drivers of legionnaires' disease in the community. In this study, we explored the relationship between the natural environment and the spatial and temporal distribution of legionellosis cases in Connecticut. METHODS: We used spatial models and time series methods to evaluate factors associated with the increase and clustering of legionellosis in Connecticut. Stream flow, pro

Update: investigation of bioterrorism-related inhalational anthrax--Connecticut, 2001.

Since October 3, 2001, CDC and state and local public health authorities have been investigating cases of bioterrorism-related anthrax. As of November 28, a total of 23 cases have been identified; 11 were confirmed as inhalational anthrax, and 12 (seven confirmed and five suspected) were cutaneous. Epidemiologic investigations to identify the source of exposure to Bacillus anthracis continue for a case of inhalational anthrax in a hospital stockroom worker in New York City (NYC) and, most recently, a case of inhalational anthrax in an elderly woman in Connecticut (CT). Hydatidiform mole and gestational trophoblastic disease in Southern Connecticut.

Of 127 patients with hydatidiform mole in southern Connecticut, 34 (28%) received chemotherapy for persistently elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) titers. An hCG regression curve was found to be useful if not mandatory for following patients. Excess uterine size, theca lutein cysts, uterine bleeding, and histologic trophoblastic hyperplasia were relative discriminators of the need for chemotherapy. In the absence of metastases, an hCG titer was the only valid discriminator for initiating chemotherapy, provided the patient could be followed consistently and reliably. The indications fo

Raccoon babesiosis in Connecticut, USA: Babesia lotori sp. n.

A species of Babesia which infects raccoons, Procyon lotor, is described and named Babesia lotori. Twelve of 14 raccoons captured from five counties in Connecticut developed parasitemia after splenectomy. Preoperative levels were subpatent or less than 1%. Parasitemia peaked anywhere from less than 5% to 36.6% in splenectomized raccoons, and all but one survived and possessed low infection rates (less than or equal to 3%) at the end of the experiment. An indirect fluorescent antibody test is described and shown to be useful in detecting antibodies to B. lotori. Seropositive raccoons were obtai

Pemphigus in Hartford County, Connecticut, from 1972 to 1977.

An investigation of a possible cluster of pemphigus cases that were diagnosed in Hartford County, Connecticut, in 1977 provided data for estimating the incidence of this disease in a defined population for the years 1972 to 1977. The average annual incidence (new cases per population per year) estimated for the overall adult population (over the age of 20 years) was 0.42 cases per 100,000 people, whereas that for Jewish adults was 3.2 cases per 100,000. Thus, the results of this report both support the hypothesis that Jewish people are at higher risk than others for the development of pemphigu

Validation of the Connecticut olfactory test (CCCRC) adapted to Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory changes are quite common in the population, causing a significant impact on the quality of life. Documentation of the olfactory function is essential for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with inflammatory diseases of the upper airways, neurodegenerative diseases or viral infections. Among the different existing smell tests, the CCCRC is an inexpensive test, easy to apply, but it has not yet been evaluated on a large scale in the Brazilian population. OBJECTIVE: To validate the CCCRC smell test, after adaptation for the Brazilian population, evaluating

A survey of environmental contamination with ascarid ova, Wallingford, Connecticut.

Few studies have been conducted in the United States to quantify the potential risk associated with encountering zoonotic ascarid ova in the environment. In an effort to raise awareness and to better understand the risk of acquiring visceral larva migrans in south central Connecticut, this environmental survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of ascarid ova (Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Baylisascaris columnaris, and Baylisascaris procyonis) in public areas of Wallingford, Connecticut, to compare prevalence levels among these public areas, and to determine what host species are prima

Human cases of furuncular, traumatic, and nasal myiasis in Connecticut.

Case histories are reported for four persons who had furuncular, traumatic, and nasal myiasis in Connecticut during 1980. Third-stage Sarcophaga sp. and Musca domestica larvae were removed from sores or wounds, a 2nd-stage Cuterebra sp. larva was dislodged from cutaneous tissue, and 3rd-stage larvae of Phaenicia sericata were extracted from nasal membranes. Human exposure to these facultative or obligate dipteran parasites occurred at residences in urban and suburban settings, including a convalescent home and a hospital. Infestations were asymptomatic in three cases, and following removal of

Spatial clusters of latent tuberculous infection, Connecticut, 2010-2014.

SETTING: In the United States, tuberculosis (TB) control is increasingly focusing on the identification of persons with latent tuberculous infection (LTBI). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the local epidemiology of LTBI in Connecticut, USA. METHODS: We used spatial analyses 1) to identify census tract-level clusters of reported LTBI and TB disease in Connecticut, 2) to compare persons and populations in clusters with those not in clusters, and 3) to compare persons with LTBI to those with TB disease. RESULTS: Significant census tract-level spatial clusters of LTBI and TB disease were identified.

Multiple Fentanyl Overdoses - New Haven, Connecticut, June 23, 2016.

On the evening of June 23, 2016, a white powder advertised as cocaine was purchased off the streets from multiple sources and used by an unknown number of persons in New Haven, Connecticut. During a period of less than 8 hours, 12 patients were brought to the emergency department (ED) at Yale New Haven Hospital, experiencing signs and symptoms consistent with opioid overdose. The route of intoxication was not known, but presumed to be insufflation ("snorting") in most cases. Some patients required doses of the opioid antidote naloxone exceeding 4 mg (usual initial dose = 0.1-0.2 mg intravenous

Hospital admissions syndromic surveillance--Connecticut, September 200-November 2003.

On September 11, 2001, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) initiated daily, statewide syndromic surveillance based on unscheduled hospital admissions (HASS). The system's objectives were to monitor for outbreaks caused by Category A biologic agents and evaluate limits in space and time of identified outbreaks. Thirty-two acute-care hospitals were required to report their previous day's unscheduled admissions for 11 syndromes (pneumonia, hemoptysis, respiratory distress, acute neurologic illness, nontraumatic paralysis, sepsis and nontraumatic shock, fever with rash, fever of unk

Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting: initial Connecticut experience.

We report the initial Connecticut experience with minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting. This procedure allows bypass grafting to the left anterior descending coronary artery utilizing the internal mammary artery as the conduit. The procedure is minimally invasive because it is performed through a mini-thoracotomy incision in the fourth anterior intercostal space and it is conducted without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. The procedure has been applied to 13 patients operated between February and October 1996. All but one patient selected were poor candidates for conventional c

To date, 13 cases of babesiosis have been reported in Connecticut, the largest number of human cases reported on the mainland United States. Two of nine patients quiried remembered a prior tick bite. Since Babesia parasites are known to be vectored only by ticks, we surmise that 12 of these infections were acquired via tick bites; 1 was obtained by blood transfusion (the patient was 46

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms. The Connecticut experience, 1935-1964.

Results for non-simultaneously diagnosed malignant tumors from Connecticut indicate that individuals with one malignant neoplasm have 1.29 times the risk of developing a new independent primary tumor when compared to individuals who never had cancer (P less than 0.01). However, the increased risk of multiple primary tumors is highly selective on a site-specific basis. Table 135 presents Connecticut Registry data indicating the risk of a subsequent primary malignancy by anatomic site of the later primary in patients with a first primary cancer.
