BACKGROUND: In the Middle East region, consanguinity remains to be a central feature where it has shown an increasing trend. Breast cancer is an extremely complex disease, characterized by a progressive multistep process caused by interactions of both environmental and genetic factors.
AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the possible effect of consanguinity on the risk of breast cancer in a population with a high rate of consanguinity and find the associated risk-modifying factors.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 167 Qatari and other Arab expatriates women with breast cancer a

Satoyoshi syndrome (SS) (OMIM 600705) is a rare multisystemic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by progressive painful intermittent muscle spasm, alopecia universalis, diarrhea, short stature, amenorrhea, and secondary skeletal abnormalities mimicking a metaphyseal chondrodysplasia. To date all reported cases have been sporadic. We describe a 26-year-old Mexican woman, a product of consanguineous parents with clinical characteristics of SS. Our patient, also showed skeletal anomalies not previously reported that seems to be a coincidental finding.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between APOE genotypes and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in elderly Indian subjects. The study also aims at the identification of consanguinity as disease risk factor for AD.
METHODS: A total of 100 Indian patients (26 consanguineous, 74 non-consanguineous), meeting criteria for probable or definite AD and 36 cognitively healthy, elderly unrelated control subjects (spouses), were included in the study. The APOE genotyping and statistical analyses (SPSS 7.5) was performed to determine the odds of AD according to APOE genotype.
RESULTS: The analysis reveale

The role of inheritance in neuronal migrational disorders is under intense investigation. Studies on neuronal migrational disorders (NMDs) from developing countries that have a high rate of parental consanguinity are lacking. The present study included 29 children (aged 15 days-12 years, mean age 1.4 years) who were diagnosed to have NMDs, from a non-selected population with seizures and non-selected population of cognitive developmental delay, in the period January 1994 to April 1997. Seventeen (58.6 per cent) patients had lissencephaly, four (13.8 per cent) patients had pachygyria, three (10

During recent years there have been published a number of reports of more than one case of transsexualism or other sexual pathology occurring within the same family. As long as the aetiology of transsexualism remains unknown the authors consider that a possible effect of recessive genes cannot be definitely excluded. To ascertain whether transsexual patients are born of cousin marriages to a greater extent than expected the authors have fully investigated family relationships for 61 known cases of transsexualism. No case of cousin marriage was disclosed.

Consanguineous marriage is defined as marriage between first or second-degree cousins, with high prevalence in many cultures and societies. Descendants from consanguineous unions have an increased risk for genetic diseases. Additionally, in consanguineous couples, chromosomal disjunction during embryogenesis could also be affected, increasing the risk of chromosomal errors. Nowadays, genomic testing allows to identify new genetic syndromes and variants related to copy-number variations (CNV), including whole chromosome, segmental and micro-segmental errors. This is the first study evaluating c

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects around 10-15% of couples worldwide and is both a social and medical problem. Parental consanguinity is considered to reduce fertility reserve. Consanguineous marriages, especially first cousin marriages, are very common in Oman according to the Oman National Health Survey data.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether women born to consanguineous parents have reduced ovarian reserve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study was conducted on 414 women aged ≤ 39, treated for infertility at Sultan Qaboos University hospital and Royal hospital, Muscat, Oma

BACKGROUND: Consanguinity is known to alter the population structure but the available literature is almost silent on the association of dental conditions with consanguinity.
AIM: The purpose was to assess the various dental developmental anomalies in 6-9 year old children born out of consanguineous and non-consanguineous marriages and its association with their parents.
DESIGN: A cross sectional house-hold survey with a sample size of 2,000 (1,600 non-consanguineous and 400 consanguineous respondents and their parents) using systematic random sampling was planned. Six to nine-year-old child

Primary immunodeficiencies represent a heterogeneous group of disorders of the immune system, predisposing to various types of infections. Among them, common variable immunodeficiency is the most common symptomatic antibody deficiency. It includes several different forms characterized by defects in the terminal stage of B lymphocyte differentiation, leading to markedly reduced immunoglobulin serum levels and increased susceptibility to bacterial infections. The clinical phenotype is complex, including autoimmunity, granulomatous inflammation, lymphoproliferative disorders and malignancies. Rar

BACKGROUND: The cause of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is multifactorial and, consanguinity could be one of the causative factors in its development. The purpose of this study was, to determine the prevalence of parental consanguinity in CTEV and other factors like associated, congenital anomalies, maternal and fetal factors and also the severity of CTEV in these patients.
METHODS: The above factors were studied in 54 patients of less than 1 month of age with parental, consanguinity and 91 feet were evaluated for its severity using Dimeglio classification at the time of presentation.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are the commonest single group of congenital abnormalities with a prevalence ranging from 1.0 to 50.89 per 1000 live births in the world population including India, whereas Mysore has a prevalence of 11.08 per 1000 live births. One of the risk factors for the occurrence of CHDs is parental consanguinity, in particular first-cousin marriage between parents.
AIM: The present study examined the role of consanguineous marriages in causing CHDs in Mysore, South India.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 144 confirmed CHD cases with an age range of 1 day t

Marriages between third-degree and more distant relatives are common in many parts of the world. Offspring of consanguineous parents have increased morbidity and mortality related to recessive gene disorders. In a population with a high frequency of consanguinity, we examined the frequency of breast cancer (related in part to tumour genes) and cervical cancers (related to virus infection) among offspring of consanguineous and non-consanguineous parents. Study was done prospectively in the United Arab Emirates. Selected were married female citizens, ages 40-65, who attended 12 primary health ca

We report a patient with a syndrome of MR/MCA who was the product of a highly consanguineous family. The patient was the result of a union between a man and his daughter. The daughter was in turn the product of a mating between this same man and his mother. Major findings include: severe psychomotor and mental retardation, microcephaly with cerebral dysgenesis and cerebellar hypoplasia, early hypotonia and late hypertonia, short stature, early swallowing incoordination with aspiration pneumonias, distinctive face with striking hypertelorism, hypospadias, cryptorchidism, overlapping fingers, an

Consanguinity has a deleterious effect with regard to congenital malformation and rare autosomal recessive diseases; however, little information exists on its role in multifactorial common adult morbidity. We investigated the effects of consanguinity on the prevalence of common diseases in adulthood, including diabetes mellitus, myocardial infarction, bronchial asthma, and duodenal ulcer. As part of a larger study investigating the inbreeding coefficient in the Israeli-Arab community, we distributed questionnaires to parents of 4,100 second-grade students in 158 randomly chosen schools. Consanguineous marriage is prevalent in certain world regions due to cultural, economic, and social reasons. However, it can lead to negative consequences including an increased risk of genetic disorders in offspring. Premarital genetic screening (PMGS) is an important tool to identify and manage these risks before marriage. This study aimed to assess the magnitude of consanguineous marriage, knowledge of genetic diseases and PMGS, and attitudes and willingness to perform PMGS in Sudan. A national household survey was conducted using a multistage sampling technique, with a sample size of 2272

The association between isolated congenital heart defects and consanguinity was examined in 759 Lebanese patients with different types of congenital heart malformations. The subjects were patients of the Children's Cardiac Registry Center (CCRC) at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. The proportion of first-cousin marriages among cardiac subjects was compared to that of the National Collaborative Perinatal Neonatal Network (NCPNN), after adjusting for the subjects' geographic distribution, and to the highest proportion reported by NCPNN. In general, the proportion of overall pare

Consanguineous couples should be adequately informed about their increased reproductive risk and possibilities for genetic counselling. Information may only be effective if it meets the needs of the target group. This study aimed to gain more insight into: (1) attitudes of people belonging to ethnic groups in Western society towards consanguinity and their understanding of risk for offspring; and (2) their attitudes regarding reproductive information targeted at consanguineous couples. Dutch Moroccans and Turks were invited to complete an online questionnaire by snowball sampling and by placin
