A Map is More Than a Polygon: Contesting Green Infrastructure in Forested Landscapes in Sweden.

Green infrastructure is a novel strategy for spatial prioritisation of forest conservation, where the elaboration of maps is of key importance. Sweden represents an interesting case, where planning for green infrastructure received special attention from governmental authorities. Under Sweden's liberal forest governance, forest stakeholders (owners, companies and interest groups) acceptance is crucial for implementing novel instruments for landscape management, such as green infrastructure plans. Involving industrial and non-industrial private forest owners is, however, not a simple task. Base

Tree health status and its influencing factors in street green space of Xiong'an New Area, China.

We developed a health assessment system for arboreal species in street green spaces of Xiong'an New Area, which comprised 12 indicators with four dimensions: whole-tree, crown, foliage, and trunk, with health grades classified into levels Ⅰ-Ⅴ (corresponding to healthy, sub-healthy, moderate healthy, unhealthy, and mori-bund, respectively). We surveyed 24 roads with 1040 trees, belonging to 32 species, 17 genera, and 11 families. Healthy and sub-healthy individuals together accounted for 63.8%, while unhealthy and moribund trees accounted for 11.0% and 4.0%, respectively. The three tree species

Ecological conservation priority requires foresight: coupling multiple scenarios and network perspective.

Understanding how future land-use dynamics reshape urban ecological network connectivity remains a critical challenge for sustainable landscape management. This study couples land-use simulation with ecological network analysis to assess network changes in Minsk, Belarus, under three 2035 scenarios: business as usual (BAU), ecological conservation development (ECD), and rapid urban development (RUD). The results show that projected urban expansion, especially under the RUD scenario, encroaches on forest habitats and intensifies ecological source fragmentation, while ECD better maintains ecolog

Integrating humans into biodiversity science through ethnobiodiversity informatics.

Biodiversity science is increasingly data-rich and computationally sophisticated, yet humans are still often treated as absent, implicit or overly simplified drivers of ecological and evolutionary change. This limits how well models represent the real-world processes that generate biodiversity and practical impact at a time when human activities are rapidly reshaping biodiversity worldwide. Here, we describe ethnobiodiversity informatics as a necessary expansion of biodiversity informatics - the mobilization, integration and analysis of digital biodiversity data - that represents the human sys

How decentralized blue-green-grey infrastructure reshapes urban drainage performance: A cost-reliability-resilience optimization framework.

Urban drainage systems in high-density coastal cities are increasingly exposed to compound flood risks driven by non-stationary rainfall, land-use intensification, and infrastructure aging. Although blue-green-grey infrastructure (BGGI) has been widely advocated, the quantitative role of network decentralization in shaping cost, reliability, and resilience trade-offs remains insufficiently understood. This study develops an integrated GA-SWMM optimization framework to systematically assess how varying degrees of centralization (DCL = 0-90.9%) influence the performance of conventional grey infr

Clarifying CSR and ESG: Causes of conflation, consequences, and pathways to conceptual clarity.

This study critically examines the persistent conflation and confusion between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concepts, which have increasingly permeated academic discourse and corporate practices. The primary objective is to identify the root causes of this conceptual overlap, assess its consequences, and propose actionable solutions. Adopting a literature review approach, the study draws from diverse academic sources, mainly from Web of Science and Scopus databases, to highlight how CSR and ESG, despite their distinct origins and purpose

Assessment of low impact development (LID) strategies under different land uses in an urban sub-catchment in the Philippines.

Lack of studies in developing countries with tropical climate such as the Philippines limit local LID adoption. This study compared the performance of different LID scenarios across different urban land use types at the sub-catchment level using peak flow, runoff volume and flood reductions as performance criteria. Results showed that the most effective strategies for each land use are: 1) combined green roof and bioretention for low-density residential (reduction up to 10% peak flow, 11% runoff volume and 33% flood volume); 2) green roof for high-density residential (8% peak flow, 6% runoff v

Investigating tree planting in Ethiopia and the extent to which scheme implementation aligns with good governance practices.

Tree planting schemes are implemented to achieve social, cultural, economic, and environmental goals. Various frameworks and guidelines outline good governance practices to aid the achievement of these goals. However, there is rarely sufficient monitoring and reporting of tree planting schemes for it to be possible to determine whether schemes adhere to good governance practices. Here, we assessed the performance of 16 tree planting schemes in Ethiopia using focus group discussions with local communities, interviews with scheme managers and beneficiaries, remote sensing, and reviewing official

On the merits and pitfalls of introducing a digital platform to aid conservation management: Volunteer data submission and the mediating role of volunteer coordinators.

Against a backdrop of accelerating digital innovation in nature conservation and environmental management, a real-world experiment was conducted with the research aims of assessing: 1) the effects of introducing a digital data-entry platform on volunteer data submission; and 2) the extent to which coordinators influence digital platform use by their volunteers. We focussed on a large-scale volunteer-based initiative aimed at eradicating the non-native American mink (Neovison vison) from northern Scotland. This geographically dispersed conservation initiative adopted a digital platform that all

Avoided emissions and conservation of scrub mangroves: potential for a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico.

Mangroves are considered ideal ecosystems for Blue Carbon projects. However, because of their short stature, some mangroves ('scrub' mangroves, less than 2 m) do not fulfil the current definition of 'forests', which makes them ineligible for emission reduction programmes such as REDD+. Short stature mangroves can be the dominant form of mangroves in arid and nutrient-poor landscapes, and emissions from their deforestation and degradation could be substantial. Here, we describe a Blue Carbon project in the Gulf of California, Mexico, to illustrate that projects that avoid emissions from defores

Scale and Sampling Effects on Floristic Quality.

Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA) is increasingly influential for making land management decisions, for directing conservation policy, and for research. But, the basic ecological properties and limitations of its metrics are ill defined and not well understood-especially those related to sample methods and scale. Nested plot data from a remnant tallgrass prairie sampled annually over a 12-year period, were used to investigate FQA properties associated with species detection rates, species misidentification rates, sample year, and sample grain/area. Plot size had no apparent effect on Mean C (

[Propagating the Culture of Schistosomiasis Control and Promoting Its Sustainable Development in China].

Great achievements have been gained in schistosomiasis control in China due to the last half-century endeavor. These achievements not only indicate the success in disease control, but also represent a particularly successful social practice with a unique cultural property. Inspite of the accumulating reports on schistosomiasis prevention and control experience, there is a need to sublimate the experience to the "cultural" level, as historically the value of cultural and spiritual merits goes far beyond that of the achievements. Although the strategy and technology will be enriched with time, t

Thermal treatment of solid residues from WtE units: a review.

Thermal treatment methods of bottom ash, fly ash and various types of APC (air pollution control) residues from waste-to-energy plants can be used to obtain environmentally stable material. The thermal treatment processes are meant to reduce the leachability of harmful residue constituents, destroy toxic organic compounds, reduce residue volume, and produce material suitable for utilization. Fly ash and APC residues often have high levels of soluble salts, particularly chlorides, metals such as cadmium, lead, copper and zinc, and trace levels of organic pollutants such as dioxins and furans. Tool for assessment of process importance at the groundwater/surface water interface.

The groundwater/surface water interface (GWSWI) represents an important transition zone between groundwater and surface water environments that potentially changes the nature and flux of contaminants exchanged between the two systems. Identifying dominant and rate-limiting contaminant transformation processes is critically important for estimating contaminant fluxes and compositional changes across the GWSWI. A new, user-friendly, spreadsheet- and Visual Basic-based analytical screening tool that assists in evaluating the dominance of controlling kinetic processes across the GWSWI is presented

Mutagenic activity as a parameter to assess ambient air quality for protection of the environment and human health.

Atmospheric pollution has significant effects on maintaining the integrity of ecosystems and on the population's quality of life. Epidemiological studies have clearly associated related health problems, especially respiratory diseases, with exposure to air pollution. Organic compounds adsorbed to the airborne particulate matter are mutagenic in the Salmonella/microsome assay, and a considerable number of them are known to be carcinogenic to rodents. Studies performed at four sites within the urban area of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, identified higher mutagenic acti

Knowing green to invent green: Dose enterprise internal green community facilitate the green innovation transformation of inventors?

Facilitating inventors' green innovation transformation (IGIT) to bolster the green talent reservoir serves as a crucial pathway for enterprises to enhance their internal motivation for green transformation and attain sustainable development. Guided by social network theory, this study innovatively introduces an informal organizational structure-enterprise internal green community (EIGC)-and systematically examines its multifaceted impact on IGIT from a coopetition perspective. Focusing on the decoupling of social and knowledge networks, this study further explores how EIGC influences IGIT by

Corporate ESG performance and green innovation: moderating effect of shareholder activism.

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance are gaining momentum to corporate sustainable development. Based on non-financial listed enterprises in China from 2013 to 2023, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of ESG performance on green innovation and shareholder activism's moderating role. We find that ESG performance effectively promotes corporate green innovation. Shareholder activism, represented by institutional investors' field survey and appointing directors, will strengthen this impact. Further analysis reveals "the superstar effect" on industrial ESG performance dis

Optimizing automated photo identification for population assessments.

Several legal acts mandate that management agencies regularly assess biological populations. For species with distinct markings, these assessments can be conducted noninvasively via capture-recapture and photographic identification (photo-ID), which involves processing considerable quantities of photographic data. To ease this burden, agencies increasingly rely on automated identification (ID) algorithms. Identification algorithms present agencies with an opportunity-reducing the cost of population assessments-and a challenge-propagating misidentifications into abundance estimates at a large s
