Male isolation: a behavioral representation of the pheromonal 'female effect' in donkey (Equus asinus).

The appearance of a decisive component of the sexual response to chemosexual signals in the male donkey was investigated through a comparison of the variations in the time-span of the behavioral classes and units for the natural versus induced breeding seasons. The results demonstrate that there are significant variations in the length of the appetitive sexual behavior (ASB) and consummatory sexual behavior (CSB) under these two reproductive conditions. These differences are analyzed for the ASB, which is adaptable, compared with the stereotyped CSB. For the ASB, male isolation is the most rep

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in rats increases sucrose taste-related motivated behavior independent of pharmacological GLP-1-receptor modulation.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery has been shown to decrease consummatory responsiveness of rats to high sucrose concentrations, and genetic deletion of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptors (GLP-1R) has been shown to decrease consummatory responsiveness of mice to low-sucrose concentrations. Here we assessed the effects of RYGB and pharmacological GLP-1R modulation on sucrose licking by chow-fed rats in a brief-access test that assessed consummatory and appetitive behaviors. Rats were tested while fasted presurgically and postsurgically and while nondeprived postsurgically and 5 h after int

Development of an assessment method for freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior using manual and deep learning analysis.

PURPOSE: Although eating is imperative for survival, few comprehensive methods have been developed to assess freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior. In the current study, we distinguished eating behavior into appetitive and consummatory phases and developed nine indices to study them using manual and deep learning-based (DeepLabCut) techniques. METHOD: The indices were utilized to three rhesus macaques by different palatability and hunger levels to validate their utility. To execute the experiment, we designed the eating behavior cage and manufactured the artificial food. The total

Dissociable individuals' neural responses to morality and competence evaluations during the anticipatory and consummatory stages.

Previous studies have shown that individuals assign differential weight to morality versus competence during feedback processing. However, these studies failed to disentangle the anticipatory and consummatory stages from feedback processing. Therefore, using event-related potentials, the current study adapted an effort-based prosocial task to explore individuals' neural response to morality and competence evaluations in both the anticipatory and consummatory stages. Behaviorally, an interaction effect between evaluation valence and evaluation dimension showed that competence evaluations were r

A brain center that controls consummatory responses.

The innate attraction to sweet mediates appetitive and consummatory responses. Here, we dissected the circuit driving responses to sweet and showed that amygdala neurons tuned to sweet connect to the bed nucleus of the stria-terminalis (BNST) to promote sweet-evoked consumption. Next, we demonstrate that the BNST functions as a central hub, transforming appetitive signals into consumption and linking sensory inputs to the internal state, not only for sweet but also for other stimuli such as salt or food, to flexibly regulate consummatory behaviors. Using single-cell functional imaging, we show

Effect of dopamine agents on schedule- and deprivation-induced drinking in rats.

The dopamine agonist, apomorphine, or its antagonist, haloperidol, was administered to rats whose drinking was induced by fixed-interval schedules of pellet delivery or by water deprivation. The first study revealed that both drugs produced dose-dependent decreases in bar-pressing and schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP). At higher doses, haloperidol also depressed the rate of pellet delivery. The second study demonstrated that the suppression in SIP obtained in the first study was primarily due to the direct effect of the drugs and not to changes they produced on the underlying food reinforcemen

Anticipatory and consummatory pleasure in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that anhedonia, or the inability to experience pleasure, is elevated in individuals with eating disorders (EDs). However, past literature has only studied anhedonia in EDs as a unidimensional construct rather than separately examining anticipatory (i.e., prediction of pleasure for a future event) and consummatory (i.e., enjoyment of a present event) pleasure. Given that these subcomponents of pleasure have distinct neurobiological correlates, studying pleasure as a multifaceted construct may yield important insights into the underlying mechanisms of binge e

Examining Behavioral Markers of Reward Processing Dysfunction in Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are common in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), including those who are weight-restored. Dysfunction in reward processing has been proposed as a mechanism linking AN to STBs; however, little research has interrogated putative reward links between these phenomena. The present study examined behavioral markers associated with STBs in weight-restored AN using two reward-related decision-making tasks. METHOD: Participants included individuals with weight-restored AN (n = 33) with STBs (AN+STB, n = 19) or without STBs (AN-only; n = 14) and he

Involvement of opioid signaling in food preference and motivation: Studies in laboratory animals.

Motivation is a complex neurobiological process that initiates, directs, and maintains goal-oriented behavior. Although distinct components of motivated behavior are difficult to investigate, appetitive and consummatory phases of motivation are experimentally separable. Different neurotransmitter systems, particularly the mesolimbic dopaminergic system, have been associated with food motivation. Over the last two decades, however, research focusing on the role of opioid signaling has been particularly growing in this area. Opioid receptors seem to be involved, via neuroanatomically distinct me

Anxiolytic-like, anorexic, adipsogenic and anti-alcohol intake effects of acute taurine administration into dorsal periaqueductal gray of female and male adult Wistar rats.

Taurine (TAU, 2-aminoethane sulphonic acid) is a semi-essential β sulfonated amino acid, one of the most abundant free amino acids in the body and the mammalian brain. Most studies on taurine have demonstrated its beneficial role at acute doses, administered either systemically or i.c.v., on numerous disease models and an inhibition of alcohol intake. The periaqueductal gray (PAG) is a key vertebrate midbrain structure for integrated defensive responses, including those representing stress and anxiety-like behavior. A strong relationship between anxiety and alcohol intake, besides the critical

Differential modulation of hippocampal signal transfer by tuberomammillary nucleus stimulation in freely moving rats dependent on behavioral state.

Tuberomammillary histamine neurons (TM) in the posterior hypothalamus project to extensive parts of the brain, including the hippocampal formation. The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate whether activation of the TM modulates signal transfer from the perforant pathway (PP) or ventral hippocampal commissure (VHC) to the dentate gyrus (DG) in freely moving rats. Paired pulses of electrical stimulation were delivered to PP or VHC, and evoked field potentials (fEPSPs and pop spikes) were recorded in the DG. Before activating PP or VHC, the TM was triggered by electrical stimulat

Effects of amphetamine, dexfenfluramine, diazepam, and other pharmacological and dietary manipulations on food "seeking" and "taking" behavior in non-human primates.

RATIONALE: Feeding consists of appetitive or foraging behavior followed by consummatory behavior. OBJECTIVES: To determine if pharmacological manipulations can differentially affect appetitive and consummatory aspects of food intake, and to compare these results to those obtained using naturalistic dietary manipulations. METHODS: Responding of baboons was studied using a schedule of reinforcement that simulated food "seeking" and food "taking." Responding during the seeking component was reinforced by stimuli paired with food, while responding during the taking component was reinforced with

Integrating Neural Circuits Controlling Female Sexual Behavior.

The hypothalamus is most often associated with innate behaviors such as is hunger, thirst and sex. While the expression of these behaviors important for survival of the individual or the species is nested within the hypothalamus, the desire (i.e., motivation) for them is centered within the mesolimbic reward circuitry. In this review, we will use female sexual behavior as a model to examine the interaction of these circuits. We will examine the evidence for a hypothalamic circuit that regulates consummatory aspects of reproductive behavior, i.e., lordosis behavior, a measure of sexual receptiv

Long-lasting sensitization of reward-directed behavior by amphetamine.

Exposure to psychostimulant drugs of abuse such as amphetamine can result in long-lasting "sensitization" of reward-directed behavior, such that subjects display enhancements in behavior directed by and toward rewards and reward-predictive cues (i.e. "incentive sensitization"). The purpose of these experiments was to determine the degree to which such sensitization resulting from chronic amphetamine exposure influences both appetitive and consummatory food-motivated behavior. Adult male Long-Evans rats received daily i.p. injections of D-amphetamine (2.0 mg/kg) or saline vehicle for five conse

Deficits in consummatory reward relate to severity of cocaine use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Identifying modifiable neuropsychological factors associated with more severe CUD could improve CUD treatment. Impairments in processing of non-drug rewards may be one such factor. This study assessed the relationship between reward functioning and cocaine use severity using multi-modal measures of three distinct reward functions: consummatory reward (pleasure or "liking"); motivational reward ("wanting") and reward learning. METHODS: Fifty-three adults with at least moderate CUD completed self-report and behavioral measures of consummatory reward, motivational reward and

Anhedonia Links Sleep Problems and Suicidal Thoughts: An Intensive Longitudinal Study in High-Risk Adolescents.

Growing research indicates that sleep problems are a robust independent risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors among youth. However, relatively little is known about how this risk is conferred. This study used an intensive longitudinal design to investigate anhedonia as a mechanism linking sleep problems and next-day suicidal thoughts in a clinically high-risk sample of adolescents. Adolescents (N = 48; Mage=14.96; 77.1% white, 64.6% female) completed an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study design for 28 days following discharge from acute psychiatric care for suicide risk. Are Extremes of Consumption in Eating Disorders Related to an Altered Balance between Reward and Inhibition?

The primary defining characteristic of a diagnosis of an eating disorder (ED) is the "disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food" (DSM V; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). There is a spectrum, ranging from those who severely restrict eating and become emaciated on one end to those who binge and overconsume, usually accompanied by some form of compensatory behaviors, on the other. How can we understand reasons for such extremes of food consummatory behaviors? Recent work on obesity and substance use disorders has identif

Role of glutamate receptors in the ventromedial hypothalamus in the regulation of female rat sexual behaviors I. Behavioral effects of glutamate and its selective receptor agonists AMPA, NMDA and kainate.

Bilateral infusions of glutamate or kainate to the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) have been shown previously to produce a rapid inhibition of lordosis in estrogen-primed female rats induced by manual flank stimulation. The present study examined whether glutamate or selective ionotrophic glutamate receptor agonists can disrupt appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors following bilateral infusions to the VMH of females during copulation with male rats. Ovariectomized, sexually experienced female rats were implanted bilaterally with guide cannulae aimed at the ventrolateral VMH. After recov

Central ghrelin receptor stimulation modulates sex motivation in male rats in a site dependent manner.

Ghrelin, a hormone produced primarily by the stomach, has been associated with motivational processes that include reward-seeking behaviors. In male laboratory mice, elevation of ghrelin levels enhances some aspects of sexual motivation and behavior, whereas in other experiments with male mice, rats, and other species, ghrelin treatment or food deprivation decreases sexual motivation and/or behavior. The present tested the hypothesis that stimulation of ghrelin receptors in different brain regions have opposite effects on male sexual motivation and behavior. To do this we examined appetitive a
